The core mechanic is a really good abstraction of the theme: trade a card of higher value to represent sneakily bribing the local official. Very clever implementation.

The travel tokens in Gugong look like they’re shaped like Pringles chips. Very cool design to keep a stack of small tokens from toppling over.

Thanks for your hard work Jon, these are always a treat to watch with the production quality and detailed explanations. Just as an FYI to anyone curious: The gugong, or national palace museum, is a very important historical building in Taiwan as showcased in the game, and today it serves as the most important museum containing ancient Chinese artifacts like jade carvings and scrolls. Its basically the Louvre of China, and millions of visitors go there each year. :)

That said, it helps to put things into more modern context. Taiwan (or Republic of China) is not the same country as mainland China, also known as People's Republic of China. So yes, while it's technically similar to Louvre, it'd have to be situated in Louisiana for this analogy to work.

Thanks for picking it! Was fun to have an excuse to play it again. I remember when I first played it with you I felt like it had maybe more going on then I'd prefer, but in comparison to the recent heavy euros I've played this felt refreshingly straightforward :P

Totally agree. It might be on the slightly heavier side of medium weight, but certainly not heavy, and you can't beat the production quality of the deluxe edition. One of the nicest games in my collection. My group has recently been riding the wave of new releases (Maracaibo, Clank! Legacy, Tapestry) and Kickstarter arrivals (On Mars, Paladins, Pret-A-Porter, Coloma), but once things start to slow down, I expect Gugong to get back to the table periodically. Thanks again!

I watched one of mine recently, I needed a refresher on a game I hadn't played in a while. It made me remember the whole process that went into creating them and reaffirmed to me that they were just not good my longetivy as a video creator. I was burning out on them and actively disliked the process of making them, but I do appreciate them now. They were designed to exactly match what I wanted to see as a viewer and I like to think I did that version of a review quite well.

Had this in my shelf for a while, as yet unplayed. Might just break it out this weekend. While the game looks great, I tend to think it lacks any real depth in strategy. Would be nice if you could combo more of the actions together to pull off “power moves” rather than the various spaces being seemingly unrelated to each other.

At 18'50" you explain end game value of jade, but mention wrong VP. ! jade is 1VP (correct), but 2 jade is 3VP (not 2) .... and 5 jade is 15VP (not 5). Still a great learning video for a great game. One comment: You didn't mention you have used the deluxe version of the game. Your boats have double layers, so there are indents to put your servants in. The retail version has cubes as servants and single layer ship tiles with printed squares to put your servants on. In the retail game, the first player markers are cardboard tokens (not metal "coins") and jades are also cardboard (instead of glass beads).

Regarding Jade I think I wasn't as clear as I meant to be there. I meant that the first jade you acquire is worth 1 point, the second one will be worth 2 (3 total), the third is 3 (6 total), etc. Sorry for being confusing there. Regarding the components, I backed this one on KS and it didn't occur to me that there would be a difference between this and the regular retail version. I apologize for not making that clearn.

Have you considered making your tutorial and playthrough different videos? A playthrough really gets lost in all the rules explanations.

I briefly considered it but decided against it. I assume that the vast majority of people watching will not know the rules already so they will need to know how the game plays to understand the playthrough. If you do know the rules and find the teaching parts annoying then I suppose you can start at the extended playthrough since at that point usually less than 25% of the game has been played.
