Apple EASILY could have made the SSD nands socketted... with a basic retaining clip and then have the T2 format / restore any needed, AND have a copy of the intel firmware needed for the NANDs. They EASILY could have made this use a flash drive, and as long as the t2 is good and your USB ports work, the t2 could sue the flash drive to restore easily. They EASILY could have done this. But NOOOOOOOO This is EXACTLY why their decisions for this are harmful to right to repair and should be illegal -- they should give reasonable efforts to make things repairable -- having to juggle t2 types, nand port locations and apple configurator... is not reasonable. The t2 can easily detect this and require extra data, which EASILY could be in the form of a data file provided by apple to restore the computer/diagnose issues. Sure, if t2 was replaced -- then it could need more... but then you could insert a flash drive and have the t2 recognize that and restore itself off of that data using a similar macbook recovery data file. Apple could easily just offer a recovery data file for each macbook, like they used to for iphones/ipod touches..... the IPSW... but they choose not to in order to control repair.
