Excellent fly! I've been trying to test the differences between hooks with a brassy finish vs. black finish lately. I will sometimes get takers on the same fly, but with a brass colored hook instead of the black hook. It could be the flash of that color that gets their attention. But, then I think that the black hook is more similar to the actual midges they take. Whew, who knows right? This world of never ending fly fishing what ifs. Hahahaha. I live in Albuquerque, and come up to SJ on the regular. Hope to see you guys up there.

Alternatively, you can use a lighter and heat up the tubing, melting it, and then mash it with your fingers to make the tie-in portion lay perfectly flat.

Thanks for the video. Quick question.. Should the midge tubing match the thread color (olive thread and olive midge tubing)? If so, do you use clear tubing for your gray Big Macs?? Thanks again man, your videos are awesome!

It definitely doesn’t have to. I like color combos like red over gray or brown over olive. Happy tying.

Looks great. Thanks. I assume that you fish this with split shot and a strike indicator.

Yes, but I also will tightline this pattern in conjunction with a weighted fly.

This pattern also simulates Black Fly larva (Simuliidae). I found Midge (Chironomidae) and Black Flies are abundant at Sand Hole and Kitty hole. Great pattern! Midges are also abundant in the Texas Hole parking lot 😂 but fishing is a little slow there.

Yep! You can see a black fly larva at 0:27 in a stomach sample taken at BOR. Great insight.

That pattern is a little complicated for my skill level. Got anything easier to tie?
