1. Types of Cards - New = Blue - Learning/Re-learning = Red - Graduated = Green 2. How intervals are calculated (for graduated cards) - New interval = current interval *ease*interval modifier - Default starting ease = 250% - Default interval modifier = 100% E.g. Suppose you have a card with current interval of 10 days. Then if you have marked the card as Good, the next time Anki will show the card is: 10*2.5*1 = 25 days. At this point if you mark it as Good, the next time Anki will show the card is 25*2.5*1 = 62 days. 3. Ease factor vs. Interval modifier - Ease applies to individual cards. Each card has its own ease factor associated with it no matter which deck you move it to. - Interval modifier applies to decks. The whole deck has interval modifier associated with it. E.g. Deck 1 (interval modifier = 100%): Card 1 (10d interval): Ease = 265% -> New interval = 10*2.65*1= 26 d Card 2 (10d interval): Ease = 210% -> New interval = 10*2.10*1 = 21 d Deck 2 (interval modifier = 80%). Suppose Card 1 is moved to Deck 2. Now Card 1’s new interval is = 10*2.65*0.8 = 17 d Lower interval modifier makes cards appear at higher frequency. 4. How answers modify ease factor (for graduated cards) - Good = ease remains unchanged - Again = subtract 20% from ease - Hard = subtract 15% from ease - Easy = add 15% to ease 5. How answers modify interval (for graduated cards) - Good = current interval *ease*interval modifier - Again = relearning step. Each again is a “lapse”. If relearning step is answered incorrectly, card is shown again in the Step (minutes). If relearning step is answered correctly, the new interval is determined as a % of the old interval. E.g. Suppose old interval is 10 days. Then if new interval say 0% -> card shows again the next day. If new interval is 70% -> show card again in 70% or 7 days. Compare default settings vs the guy’s settings at 7:34. He uses Steps (in mins) of 20, New interval of 70%, Min interval of 2 days, and Leech action of Tag Only. - Hard = current interval *1.2*interval modifier - Easy = current interval *ease*interval modifier *easy bonus 6. Don’t get stuck in “Ease hell” “Ease hell” affects graduated cards. Suppose new card has interval of 5d -> If mark Good, you see it again in 5*2.5*1 = 12 days -> If mark Good, see it again in 12*2.5*1 = 30 days -> If mark Good, see it again in 30*2.5*1 = 75 days. Suppose a different card also has interval of 5d -> If mark Again or Hard frequently, its interval drop to lowest possible, which is 1.3. Then see it again, and mark Good, see again in 5*1.3*1 = 6d -> Mark Good, see again in 6*1.3*1 = 8d -> Mark Good, see again in 8*1.3*1 = 10d. -> Thus, you see low-ease factor cards too often sometimes, or “ease hell”. 7. Learning Phase Answering a card incorrectly in the learning phase does not change its ease factor and does not count towards the lapses. These things only happen in review phase with graduated cards. At any time in the learning process you get the card wrong, Anki goes back to the first step in the Steps (in mins) until you get the card right. -> Thus, should increase learning steps so you can learn the cards well enough before cards are graduated. Compare Default vs. his settings at 14:04. His settings: Steps (in mins) are 15 1440 8640. Graduating interval is 15 days. Easy interval is 60 days. 8. Longer learning steps are better - Longer intervals build stronger memory - Longer intervals are more efficient SuperMemo 2 (1987): Interval 1 = 1 day Interval 2 = 6 days Then Interval = previous interval *ease factor Barhrick Study (1993): longer study intervals are better Rohrer and Pashler (2007): having too little spacing is worse than having too much. 9. Aim for 80-90% retention rate Aim for True retention rate of 80 - 90%. If >90%, cards may be too easy and/or review too frequently. If Settings icon -> Options -> Reviews -> Interval modifier. Check Anki manual for an equation to calculate the appropriate modifier (at Anki manual site -> Deck Options -> Reviews). - Improve quality of cards. Read SuperMemo site “20 rules of knowledge formulation”.

*Summary of the technical details* (please watch the video for the intuition) # *Phases* ## _Learning Phase_ By default, there's a test after one minute and another after 10 additional minutes. If you fail any of these tests, you go back to the first one. Once you complete them all, the card is shown, by default, the next day and goes to the Reviewing Phase. If you click the Easy Button at any point, the card will be shown four days later and it will skip immediately to the Reviewing Phase. ## _Reviewing Phase (aka, when the card is Graduated)_ You are tested indefinitely after progressively longer intervals. If you fail, you enter the Relearning Phase. The intervals are computed with the formulas explained below. ## _Relearning Phase_ You are tested every 10 minutes, by default, until you succeed. The new interval will be, by default, 0% of the interval immediately before entering the relearning step; so it will be the minimum interval, which, by default, is one day. # *Interval formulas for Reviewing Phase* A different formula for computing the interval (to the next time the card is shown) is used depending on your recall performance: * Again: go to relearning phase * Hard: Current Interval * 1.2 * Interval Modifier * Good: Current Interval * Ease * Interval Modifier * Easy: Current Interval * Ease * Interval Modifier * Easy Bonus The factors used above are defined as follows. ## _Ease_ The Ease is a property of the card. By default, it starts at 250%. Its minimum value is 130%. During the Reviewing Phase, it changes depending on your recall performance: * Again: -20% * Hard: -15% * Good: +0% * Easy: +15% ## _Interval Modifier_ The Interval Modifier is a property of the deck. By default, it is 100%. ## _Easy Bonus_ The Easy Bonus is a property of the deck. By default, it is 130%.

You said that the easy factor gets 20% reduced when you press again but then above you also pointed that it goes through a relearning phase. Could you clarify? Thank you! Also, for hard, isn't it: current interval * {(1-0.2) * Ease factor} * interval modifier? The video says that you subtract 20% from ease factor

80 / 20 rule - all the ideas behind Supermemo and Anki originally were predicated on the hyper-analytic (and frankly STUPID) programmer's approach to language learning which fails to see the forest for the trees. I work with programmers all day, I'm very comfortable with the failed mental models they use for the world that make them good coders but bad at other parts of the business. The larger context is that a language is a huge interconnected system... and that is the context that is completely lost when mindless amounts of mindless time are spent in memorization software. I'm glad you presented this, I think it is moving in the right direction. I haven't through my own research concluded absolutely if it is necessary & optimal to use Anki to some degree for super hard languages with no cognate vocabulary (e.g. Korean). But I've absolutely concluded it shouldn't be used at all for languages with cognates like French and Spanish. But I'd consider it ok to use as long as it never exceeds 5% of one's study hours per week. (There are a couple very specific applications where it could resolve frustration, like if you know you've forgotten what a word means 15 times and it is causing anxiety.)
@ConanLiuMD
@ConanLiuMD 3 жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent with your argument. For language learning specifically, Anki is a good supplement but will not help you truly learn and master a language. It definitely requires using the language in actual practice in order to improve meaningfully. Same thing with medicine - applying the facts and info learned in real problems / questions is the best way to really make them applicable and stick in your mind!

Thank you for the video! I tried out the settings for a while, but they didn’t really work out for me. I would consistently fail cards either at the 8640 step or the 15 day graduating interval step because at that point I hadn’t seen the card in such a long time that I would just forget it. I feel like, for people with worse short term retention, a simple two step 20 minutes and 1440 with graduating at either 2 or 3 days to be optimal. Also, it might be more worth it to get a stronger foundation on new cards by not having such a jump between the first day and the next interval. For more conceptual cards, I can see this system working, but for more minutia cards shorter intervals probably work better.

Extremely useful, Thank you so much! I started to use Anki over 6 months ago without previous knowledge about it (my bad i should've read and done the proper lookups), so i got stuck and later on I stopped to practice (I knew something wasn't right with its default learning intervals but i didn't know how to fix it) cuz it wasn't working and i was getting bored to practice the same shit over and over and then don't even remember it (ex: i have a bunch of card with 5 lapses in just 2 month). I just realized how many things i wasn't doing right, not just with the "advanced modification" but also creating my cards.

yaeh I wish it was that easy for me, but I have to actually do some opposite things as suggested here: I'm learning Chinese and those words are so difficult to get into short time memory for me that longer study intervalls would not prevent me from "ease hell" but send me to the worst hell of all: a deck full of unknown cards with no chance of ever learning anything. That's exactly the reason why I can't use his settings for graduating: I'm totally happy if I knew a new word after ten minutes but that rarely ever happens. I'm trying a new setting where I actually will do the opposite and lower down these steps to a couple of minutes.

This explained the Anki formula so much more clearly than any other resource I've seen. Thank you! I've been using Anki to help me study Japanese for about 10 years now and I just want to add that there's a huge difference in my ability to remember new Japanese words now as to opposed to when I started Japanese (I've tried taking on a new language and my ability to remember new words gets reset unfortunately). So if you're just starting a new language I think the jump from one day to six days may be a little too brutal (although maybe not, depending). If it's too difficult try customizing the steps to something that works better for you like 20 1440 4320 8640 maybe.

Good = current interval *ease*interval modifier Learning steps: 15m 1d 2d 4d 8d Graduating interval: 15d how much the current interval in that case?

Thank you. For years, I never used the easy button and never understood how that affected my intervals. The reason I initially restricted my choices to the first three answers was because I felt unsure how to choose between "good" and "easy". I would really value any insight you have into this. For me, it is obvious if I got an answer right or wrong, and equally obvious whether I had to struggle to get an answer right. That covers three conditions. But I don't understand how to distinguish between "good" and "easy". When I first started using Anki, I tried to do so but felt I was wasting too much time trying to decide between these two, which was my motivation for trying to simplify by ignoring the "easy" button. Thanks to your video, I now understand why this was a bad idea. Knowing how each button will affect my cards also helps slightly - but I don't want to do the arithmetic to decide what kind of interval would be best for each card when trying to answer it. Do you have any method for instinctually or deterministically deciding between 3 and 4?
@ConanLiuMD
@ConanLiuMD 3 жыл бұрын
I think your intuition led you to the correct decision! I actually think only hitting "good" makes a lot of sense. I basically never hit easy even if a card was easy for me. The only reason that I hit easy is if I have a card that I know has been stuck in "ease hell" and has had its interval modifier reduced to 130% or something. Otherwise I basically only hit good when I get a card right!
@caseyalanjones
@caseyalanjones 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The thing is though, I do hit "hard" and "again", which subtract from a card's ease, and it seems like "easy" is the only way to get that back up, since "good" does nothing... At least I am aware of this now, and how and why to adjust all of the settings. I really appreciate your taking the time to make this video and share your knowledge about that.

This video so far the best Anki tutorial ever. After 1 year of trial here is my opinion for your settings. I followed up your steps with only difference on use 1 day, 4 days and 7 days before graduating. At first I thought it should have been perfect for me. But then I realized that with 70 % of relearned steps instead of 0 % is a disaster move for all of us try to MEMORIZE. This program’s final aim make you to memorize information. If you fail a card then you need to start over. What is the purpose of %70 relearning steps? Seriously?
@ConanLiuMD
@ConanLiuMD 3 жыл бұрын
It's because you theoretically have already learned the card pretty well so you shouldn't have to take as long to relearn it! I use 50% nowadays. Definitely feel free to lower it if you prefer it that way! :)

at 27:30 if the retention percentage was 96% this means you are doing the cards too frequently. then you go and change the interval modifier to 85%. why though? shouldn't you increase the interval modifier to something like 130% so that you will see the cards less frequently?
