In Part 3 of the MUNCHIES Guide to Oregon, host Gabi travels to the Willamette Valley-the heart of Oregon wine country-to talk with three vintners who are producing some of the best Pinot noir in the world.
First, Gabi heads to Domaine Serene to sample their 2010 Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir, which was recently rated the third-best wine in the world by Wine Spectator magazine. She also meets Andrew Beckham from Beckham Estate Vineyard, who shows her how he’s returning to truly Old World methods by making his own clay amphorae to ferment and age his wines. Her last stop is to share a can of Pinot (yes, you read that correctly) with Ryan Harms of Union Wine Company. We’ll cheers to that.

I dont know if it's more strange to have an ex alcoholic doing wine segments or a person that doesn't seem to have any knowledge about wine soing a wine segment

I agree with you. But also just wanted to point out that there's no such thing as an "ex" alcoholic.

***** No, not at all. That's quite a jump from what I said. Alcoholism is a psychological disorder that people must contend with their whole lives.

***** Addiction is a psychological disorder, if you are addicted to something, you have an addiction disorder. Just because an addict has stopped using and has been clean and sober for even years, does not mean they are still not addicted, they will still have impulses and urges at the back of their mind trying to make them use substances again. It's not to do with the past, it's to do with the present, and addiction effects people not just in the past but in the present also. You can never fully beat addiction, but you can always fight it. It's the same with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, it will never fully go away, you can fight it down and make the symptoms unnoticeable, and that's great, but it is never "beaten"
@SuperMegaUltraPigeon
@SuperMegaUltraPigeon 9 жыл бұрын
***** Even when a person moves into a healthier state, they are still effected by the disorder. Someone with an addictive personality disorder that does not use drugs anymore, still has the urges to use drugs, and they have to fight them daily. Someone with Bipolar or Schizophrenia may still suffer from delusions or have mood swings, but they are nowhere near as extreme. I don't understand the whole "Labels" thing, we need to accept what we are, we don't need to identify a label as the defining factor of who we are. Accepting what you are is probably less of a hinder to a person than denying what they are, if an addict does not acknowledge they are an addict, and neither does no one else, the chances of them getting help are very little. If they accept "I'm an addict and i need help", then they will get it. No one identifies as "addict" or "bipolar" as the defining character trait of their personality. I don't see many people meeting other people and saying "Hi i'm Dan and i have crippling depression". If you really want help with your disorder, you're going to have to accept that you have the disorder. Doesn't mean it has to be the main thing in your life.

Jumona Maximorich Why in the world would some what _does_ drink alcohol drink so much wine that they would get rudely drunk or get alcohol poisoning?
@meganmcgrath8378
@meganmcgrath8378 9 жыл бұрын
Everyone watching this should understand that spitting wine during tastings is 100% normal and fully expected. You can be a teetotaler and still enjoy wine. It's considered really unprofessional at wine tastings to get drunk, and it's impossible to stay sober if you drink everything you're tasting--so everyone spits. So stop down-voting on this one point! It's not only normal, it's a GOOD thing. Edit: Also, it's not like professional alcohol purveyors are unaware of or insensitive to alcoholism. Someone in this profession who is open and cautious about their history with alcoholism, and is careful not to drink even when engaging in a professional tasting, is looked at with respect. At least in my experience.
@meganmcgrath8378
@meganmcgrath8378 9 жыл бұрын
Yasi, yes!! It's absolutely standard. She was waving it around because they weren't sitting ;-) And I'm sure the guy was surprised when she spit the wine in the air like a fountain, but really, it's not that weird. Every professional tasting will involve spit-buckets--ESPECIALLY if someone present is a non-drinker. I really am genuinely irritated at people for down voting on this account.

Megan McGrath I work in the wine industry here in the Portland area. Meagan speaks the truth! I would say half of the time we spit when many wines at one time. It doesn't mean that we don't drink a few sips here and there, or drink a glass or 3 after work lol. But to drink wine all day and work is an impossible feat to do regularly. And there is a time and a place to get that buzz going haha

some people dont realise that spitting wine is an actual thing to do, especially if you are going to drink lots. you still get the taste but wont get drunk as fast. though people only really do that when they are going to taste multiple types of wine. its also a preference thing some people spit or swallow :D

A great place to try wines that are on the spendy side, but without breaking the bank, is at Cinetopia theaters. They have Vinetopia at the Beaverton location, and at the original Vancouver WA theater. I've gone and tried a few multi hundred $ bottles from, there one ounce at a time, and it was really affordable. They use a sealed system that replaces the wine volume in the bottles with I think Argon, which is neutral to the wine, so it can dispense a single ounce at a time. Also you should go for the theater experience there.

Glaciers pushing and retracting created all kinds of changes in soil composition in the Willamette Valley. There is Volcanic Soil and Sedimentary Soils that were all moved around because of this. Some of these soils came from Lava Flows and other from floodlands that were actually once part of Montana. The Finger Lakes of Western NY were also created from the same type of circumstances.
