Hence, by itself, it follows that every person who begins to seek God, in addition to external instructions, is simultaneously given a full revelation about performing the Jesus prayer. With it, we are cleansed and strengthened, we see spiritually and discover a new inner world. Without knowing this path, the majority of people remain only with physical or spiritual exercises and waste their life time and efforts fruitlessly (Saint Theophanes the Recluse). There are many holy fathers of the church who talk about it and about history... You just have to search for the language of an Orthodox country and translate it, as unfortunately there are not that many translations of the texts in English.

If you're interested in Orthodoxy, you should check out the Eastern Catholic Churches. You badically get Orthodox theology, but you're in communion with Rome! I go to an Eastern Catholic church (Melkite Greek Catholic) and love it! I have learned so much.

Yes. This is the purest prayer, found in carved into the cell walls of ruined monasteries as far back as the year 400. Even today monks will repeat this thousands of times a day. I've heard monks quoted as saying that the 100 times we say it out here in the world are worth the 1000 times they say in the monastery
