Guided Math Lesson | How to Count Money Lesson
This Guided Math Lesson video shows an ENTIRE Guided Math lesson from start to finish that I did in my own classroom. This guided math lesson is the third lesson in my Money Unit.
We begin this guided math lesson with a mentor-text read aloud and create an anchor chart for the unit. Then we move on to counting nickels and pennies... and then move on to counting dimes and pennies, which is demonstrated in this video.
Every one of my guided math lessons and units focuses on using the CPA approach to teaching and learning. All of my lessons have a scaffolded approach where we go from using CONCRETE manipulatives, then to pictorial representations of the concepts, and then to the Abstract representations of the skills.

Do you teach Guided Math in your classroom? What strategies do you use for teaching how to count money?

What's fun to do with money, esp. if you have a helper (volunteer) is to have a "Banker." Then a student can go to the banker for an exchange. Perhaps the student has a dime and wants to trade it in for pennies. So the student comes up to the banker, and says, "I'd like to trade this dime for pennies," Then the banker makes a big production of giving, say, 8 pennies for the dime, claiming that the student is getting a great deal. "Oh, have I got a deal for you! Today we're having a special on pennies, so I'm going to give you 8 pennies for that 1 dime," and then counts out 8 pennies to give in exchange for the dime. You as the teacher then discuss with the class whether that is a great deal for the student, and get the students to realize that it is a bad deal. As you go through more examples, you do more exchanges. You could change between dollars and dimes, dimes and pennies, etc. to represent place value, or go beyond that to include exchanges of dimes with nickels, quarters with nickels, etc. You could have the banker lose on the exchange, as well. Obviously the point of the lesson is not to make bankers appear to be dishonest but that you do have to be careful when banking or shopping because mistakes can be made. The same approach can be used when trading in a 10 for ones in regrouping and with fractions at a higher grade level, as when subtracting mixed numbers and needing to make an exchange. Many kids have a hard time seeing that 1 whole is worth 2 halves or 3 thirds or 8 eighths, etc. Kids love to analyze the deals and find unwise transactions.
