I know all too well how important it is to keep our kiddos attention during small groups. We have such limited time and we need to make sure that we are reaching our students, as well as keeping them interested and excited to be there.
Keeping things fresh and new during small groups is so important. And I always like to include some type of interactive Flip Flap Book® or notebook such as my Guided Reading Flip Flap Books®. My students LOVE them because they really never knew what they would do in small group. We want to make sure that whatever we are giving our students that it really bumps up that engagement, that will get them excited about learning and the book that they are reading!

I bought 6 sets of magnetic lower case letters. Then I wrote the letters in permanent marker on 6 whiteboards, spacing them about an inch apart. I then placed the magnetic letters on top of where I'd written. I hand each child a magnet letterboard during word work. By asking them to remove only certain letters, I can dictate words and have them organize the letters in front of them, changing different parts of the words as we go. They really like using magnets. Many other activities can be done with the letters and they are easy to clean up because it's obvious where each letter goes.

Hey there Lesa... Thanks for watching. I have been teaching full-time since 1992. I have been doing different types of activities with my students since my first year in my 1st grade classroom. I was always a crafty child growing up and when I became a teacher I brought that into my classroom through different types of projects. I have been using "folding paper" activities forever! I can remember vividly doing a phonics activity with my FIRST class in 1st grade and we cut out little rectangles of paper and glued them in our marble notebooks and drew pictures under the flaps that matched the consonant sound on the front of the flap of paper. I did this my first year of teaching back in 1992 and I created new and fun ways of teaching my students since then. I learned of Dinah Zike about 8ish years ago when I first starting selling my teaching resources online when a teacher was talking about "trademark infringement" in a FB group I was part of. At that time, I had a very basic understanding of what that was, but I was intrigued because there was such a "hub-bub" around it. In learning more about it, I read that Dinah Zike or the company she wrote for trademarked the word "foldable" and it wasn't to be used in the name of any products because sellers were getting C&D letters about using the word "foldable" so it was an interesting learning experience. A learning experience that helped me truly learn what copyright and trademark infringement was and led me to apply and register 7 of my own trademarks for my company. With that being said, I have to politely disagree that I have to credit Dinah Zike with folding paper activities when I have been doing this in my classroom for over 23 years. I have never seen her books or used them over all of my years of teaching and only learned about her during this trademark issue that was going on in the "teacherpreneur" world. Through my research I found that she wrote some books that had foldable paper activities in them. So, all that being said, she may have trademarked the word "foldable," but since I didn't learn of her until about 8ish years ago and I have been doing activities like this in my classroom since I started teaching, I don't have to credit her with folding paper activities. Hope this helps.

These are not strategies, they are gimmicks that are not aligned with the Science of Reading. This type of instruction is harmful to children and creates bad reading habits.
