The show was fine without her. She wasn’t the star of the show.

When Vanessa cried "OH MAUREEN MAUREEEN!" I was done....the first time.

Even all these years later, this still has the power to devastate the soul. My God. The sl's & the writing & the actors were truly the GREATEST of any show of any genre on the small screen. It could even rival ANYTHING that Hollywood could EVER create! 😔

Too bad it ultimately ended the show in the long run.

Soap actors are the best actors in the world: FACT. The amount of pages they have to learn, showing up every day and still knocking it out of the park consistently. Movie actors and theatre actors can’t do what they do.

That shot of Ed's back as Eve prepares to tell him the news, combined with that music was breathtaking. I remember coming home from high school everyday to catch the last 30 minutes of GL during this time. I remember this shocking the hell out of me.

I'll never forget the line, "Somebody's gonna get Maureen's heart." Wow, all these years later and I remember that...

Interesting that the recipient of her heart appeared on the show years later too.

One of the rare times in later GL they remembered that Alan-Michael is part Bauer.

This storyline blows me away as much today as it did when it originally aired. Ed's reaction in this clip just kills me.

It also killed Guiding Light.

One of the most heartbreaking death in soaps. The start of GL going downhill.

This was such a blunder Watchmojo should add it in a possible top 10 blunders in daytime soaps.

I remember this episode so well. So damn depressing but well-acted. The music was chilling. love how Alan-Michael was so concerned for his Uncle Ed. One really did not want Lillian there as a witness. "Imagine if someone's lucky enough to get Maureen's heart." *sigh* Peter Simon was excellent here.

It was 1992 & I had watched GUIDING LIGHT since late 1981 [my neighborhood baby-sitter got me hooked; she is 4 yrs older than I am & I remember that instead of saying, "Let me turn on the oven so you can stick your head in there while I watch my show," she said "this person is married to that person & that person is sleeping with this person, etc." I went to get a pencil & paper so I could follow the GL cast/characters/storylines, etc. & I was able to watch GL until the very last episode, even meeting some of its actors over the years at various appearances [Mark Derwin, (original Mallet @Salisbury Mall in Salisbury, MD); Rick Hearst & Melina Karakaredes (2nd Alan-Michael & original Eleni @Wheaton Plaza in Silver Spring, MD); Mark Lewis & Kim Zimmer (Kurt Corday & Reva Shayne @Prince George's Plaza in Silver Spring, MD); Bradley Cole & Robert Newman (Richard Winslow/Jeffrey O'Neill & Josh Lewis @Kings Dominion in Richmond, VA); Vincent Irizarry (Lujack/Nick, GL; at the Marriott Marquis in NYC when Vincent had his online fan club, Friends of Vincent Irizarry, during his ALL MY CHILDREN tenure as Dr. David Hayward; I have also spoken with him in the ICU after brain surgery--when you have an IV Demerol drip, a button you can push to control how much other IV meds you can take AND Vincent Irizarry whispering in your ear, you're having a pretty sweet night while flying high & giggling uncontrollably @the impossibility of such a soul-healing encounter {ahem}...All hail my favorite show, GUIDING LIGHT. I still miss it...

Later we find out that Jessie Blue gets Mo's heart. I hated that they killed Mo off, and god this was really sad, but I liked how GL kept the continuity from this episode to the later 90's. God, I miss the incredible writing.
@rachelkristine46693 жыл бұрын
Ikr?! I was in high school at the time. Came home around 3, right after the show was over & found my mother absolutely inconsolable. When she told me why, I was devastated. It's like Mo was part of my own family. I was 16. 😔

@CarlD2 It took me a little while to remember than Alan Michael and Maureen were related (abeit by marriage). I also realized only recently that Vanessa's husband Matt was Maureen's nephew.

Maureen was killed off to make room in the budget for Justin Dean to join the show as Buzz.

The only saving grace of this storyline was that the aftermath of Maureen's death was beautifully written. Ed & Michelle's scenes together were wrenching as he tried to ease her pain and deal with his guilt. And when Holly stepped in as Michelle's substitute mother, it reminded long-time fans of her scenes with young Chrissie (Blake). Maureen Garrett has a nice acting chemistry with children. (But GL had to ruin even that by having a crazy Holly kidnap Springfield's kids years later.)

@Messylin That's a shame if true. Ellen Parker was great and should not have been pushed aside for Justin Deas. When I think about it, the character of Buzz really could have stayed dead and I wouldn't have cared. I've always though Deas was a bit overrated.
