There was this gentleness that Grant’s Phillip had with Judi’s Beth, that drew me into their love story from the get go. This scene was so sweet. And even after meeting Bradley, while it’s subtle, Phillip knew something was wrong there.

Judi Evans was the definitive Beth Raines and Grant Aleksander the definitive Phillip Spaulding. None of their successors measured up. Even though Evans and Aleksander only performed together for a little over a year in actuality, they had a wonderful chemistry.

I love Judi Evans and I don't watch soaps but she was fantastic esp in Days of Our Lives as Adrienne and Bonnie.

Evans created Beth and did so beautifully. Beth Chamberlin was chosen as Evans' successor after a rigorous casting process precisely because she shared with Evans so many of the qualities that defined the character, and palpable chemistry with Aleksander, as well as with Tina Sloan (Lillian) & Micheal O'Leary (Rick). Like any good recast should, she didn't deliberately try to imitate her predecessor - she took the essence that she & Evans shared with Beth, and took it in a direction that made the character her own - and went on to play her for a collective of nearly 15 years. Taking nothing away from Judi Evans & her part in creating Beth Raines, I'd say it's very evident that Chamberlin measured up very well.

Chamberlain never made it as Beth for me. She’s a good actress but just couldn’t capture Evans innocence and vitality in the role. I wish we could have had Evans for 20 years on GL. It would have been fantastic.

The irony I love is that if Mindy had not faked getting hurt by "Boss", Vanessa's horse, Phillip probably would never had seen or payed attention at all to Beth in high school. She was on the very low end of the social high school clique versus Phillip who reigned at the very top as the rich, good looking jock. Mindy's lie unraveled a really enormous competitor for Phillip's attention. Mindy certainly got her comeuppance for her selfishness.

Me too! I was a year behind the characters in that I graduated in 1984 from high school. I remember this scene so distinctly. From this scene onward, Phillip just had that look of how much he was drawn to Beth more and more. Grant Aleksander was 7 years older and in his mid to late 20s. It amazes me still that I accept him totally as a teen. Beth and MIndy actually were in their teens at the time.

hawaiidream1 The character was written off the program after a mysterious disappearance in 1986. Although not officially killed off, Alan fabricated and doctored evidence to make it appear that Beth had died in a boating accident and her 'death' was accepted as fact. The character remained off the program for at least 2 and half to 3 years. Fast forward to around 1989. Beth, at first, returned as a different character...later revealed that she suffered from a form of memory loss...and had no recall of her life in Springfield but she eventually regained her memory. Beth Chamberlain, the actress that replaced Judi Evans, assumed the role of Beth Raines in 1989 and played the role through 1991 originally. She returned to the role at some point in 1996 after she, Phillip, and Lizzie had spent 5 years "on probation" in Arizona stemming from a bizarre corpse theft and cover-up in 1991. Phillip had been framed (by a character named Gary Swanson) for setting a bomb at a complex called The Towers and was sentenced to 5 years in Arizona. Beth Chamberlain remained in the role through the end of GL in 2009 and so she played the character the longest (1989-1991, 1996-2009).

I wished they had brought Lenore Kasdorf back as Rita Bauer and had her as a mentor for Rick. I think it would have made for a very unique friendship. After all she was his step mother. And her connection to Blake and Holly would have served another dynamic dimension that only daytime can deliver. Complex and fascinating.

Hope gave birth to Alan-Michael, not Phillip. Phillip's real parents were Dr. Justin & Jackie Marler, Alan and Elizabeth adopted Phillip. Alan & Jackie were married at one point around 1979. It all came out when Phillip was a teenager by none other than Beth's abusive stepfather Bradley in 1983.
