I enjoyed it thouroughly from start to finish. It keeps the thrills, jokes, and twists coming in a steady stream for the audience all the way through the runtime. I can understand a fan of the original not liking the lack of similarities, but frankly, if you enjoyed Pirates of the Caribean, this is the perfect western for you.

Solarstar10 I like it too. I saw it with my Dad in theaters and thought, “People hated this movie, SERIOUSLY?” Yeah there are narrative flaws. The pacing isn’t great, and it takes maybe a little too much time building everything up, but darnit this is the kind of action adventure movie that we need more of. I would gladly revisit this world, although sadly that won’t happen.

Just saw this movie for the first time this weekend and it blew me away. Don't know which big ass flaws the "critics" made out/up, but to me it was utterly entertaining, combining fierce and complex antagonists with hilarious chemistry between the charismatic leads (Armie - hugely underrated - Hammer!), showing grim violence and high stakes yet escalating always through fun and well made action. It also effortless portrays the great injustice to the natives - especially if seen through the innocent eyes of the coming to be Lone Ranger - so even an underage audience can get a feeling for the horrors that happened in that conflict without ever being too offensive or repulsive either. And the grand-finale... well see the video for that one ;)

I honestly have NO idea why this film bombed. It is a fun, exciting and genuinely funny action adventure. For me, it totally surpassed the Pirates films. The action set pieces are actually coherent as opposed to the VERY CG-heavy Pirates sequences that often got confusing to follow. As mentioned by Rossatron in this video, the 'geography' of for example, the trains, is easy to understand, thereby making the crazy action somewhat believable within the context of the narrative style. Of course, Depp steals the show as Tonto and I liked the Buster Keaton style antics here and there. Great soundtrack score by Hans Zimmer and when that William Tell Overture finally kicks in for the action finale, I was smiling when I first saw it at the cinema. If you haven't seen this yet, check it out - you will be surprised.

Also I really enjoy the Fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film On Stranger Tides! It's a fucking masterpiece, Hilarious and action packed. People just see the budget and think it's an overblown bloated mess or that's it's just Pirates of the Wild West. But I bet they're the same people that sat through 3 awful Pirates sequels. I think another reason it failed was that no-one who isn't wearing incontinence pads knows what The Lone Ranger is. I barely remember the black and white show being shown on Channel 4 in the 90's. I'm 30 and all I remember from it was a bit where someone says "The masked bandit!" before being corrected.

The cut out story thread of the main bad guys being werewolwes is obvious (not that it bothers me), but the thing that would make this film better accepted would be a shorter run time, taking out the kid and old Tonto as it's unnecesary and slows the pacing down evry damn time. And more color would be nice. The film was way to fun and funny to be this bleak.

It doesn't matter what time period the fim is supose to be set in, i just noticed a general lack of colour. I know it's based on an old TV show but i'm pritty damn sure this was made as a first in a long series of films like Gore's previous work, but it didn't pan out that way. I'm sure they didn't cater to anyone let alone the audience who saw the original, cause they're not what a film's success in 2017 hinges on. You might of noticed that all blockbusters nowdays HAVE TO be lidd orange and blue at all times, that is what they use, collores opposit each other on the colour spectrum. Have you see Mad Max fury road? Now that's a film witch looks formulaic but it gets away with it and is just a pleasure to watch no need to go backwards in time or technology.

Yes, Tonto is definitely the Captain Jack Sparrow of the Plains. That's exactly why Johnny Depp was cast as him. Gore Verbinski is definitely a master of spectacle. The Lone Ranger would have been better-received had it been a Weird Western like Rango. Instead, it reimagines the series as a Revisionist Western.

Really good analysis and video overall! Would you consider doing one about Speed Racer. This reminded it to me. I feel that just with this one, it has one of the best (action) climax in cinema in the last decade, if not more. And pretty much the whole movie was a great experiment on editing, camera movements and CGI where it also doesn't matter how "chaotic" it may seem, you still understand what's going on.

The people behind this movie put themselves in a no win situation. They wanted to give the audience a popcorn crunching extravaganza. A nod to the westerns of the 40’s and 50’s when the guys in the white hats beat the guys in the black hats but they were afraid the movie going audiences of today would sneer at such optimism in an “adult” movie. So they went dark! And this is what they got. A movie that isn’t sure of its tone. It’s as if the director wished they could give us the tone and feel of the last half hour of this movie the whole way thru but were worried about critical movie going audiences not taking the film seriously. Very strange. Reminds of the DC Comics universe. So concerned about being dark and “realistic”. I think audiences are smart enough to realize they’re going to see a movie about the Lone Ranger, not Mean Streets and will check their expectations at the door. It comes down to not trusting your audience.

I felt exactly the same way, the finale should have been the general tone of the whole movie. A pity, because i didn't dislike the message of this film either I don't know if it's a matter of budget or what, but watching that explosive climactic chasing scene i regretted even more the whole movie wasn't like that. To me anyways the movie that cemented my fandom towards Verbinsky was Rango, because Pirates was a cool story with... Well, Pirates, it was a win-win situation, Rango instead had everything to prove, and it didn't let me down

First off I like your videos and have enjoyed many of your takes especially the one on Predator. It still holds up as a favorite of mine. Being well shot does help where the actions is easy to follow. But all of that is useless if the suspension of disbelief is broken. And from what I can see, it immediately ruins the action by having a horse run on the top of and in train cars. Not only is this impossible as the hooves or shoes of the horse would have caused it to lose it's footing or that the inside of train cars aren't going to accommodate a mounted person by any measure. Doorways are tight and only about the height of a person, so a mounted person? It works in animated films as more suspension of disbelief is passable with animation, but in live action it becomes really difficult to let go of what you know of how things work in the real world.

The problem with the Lone Ranger is that it's the polar opposite of Pirates of the Caribbean. Instead of a dark story about a free-spirited antihero sailing the open seas, you have a bright story about a Texas ranger enforcing the law in the desert. (The same law Captain Jack Sparrow would have held in open contempt.) Watching this film, I got the feeling that Gore Verbinski had total antipathy toward the Lone Ranger as a character and a concept -- even to a point of literally dragging the character through manure. The lesson of the Lone Ranger is that directors are more than just talent. They're human beings with their own politics, social views, religious views, and personal preferences. I think even lesser directors like Stephen Sommers or Roland Emmerich would have likely turned out a better movie. I couldn't imagine them *hating* the subject matter as much as Gore Verbinski seemed to have.

Nice look at The Lone Ranger +Rossatron - I watched teh film on DVD - And while far from great, It DID suffer from far too much Johnny Depp, I actually enjoyed it... I think its biggest issue was that the Horse became the biggest star... It was HILARIOUS! I do think that had a little more care been taken and Disney had NOT relied on Johnny Depp to be the main draw... (It should have been called the Story of Tonto Starring Johnny Depp and featuring the Lone Ranger!), it could actual;y have worked! Muddled yes, Dumb, Of Course, but a Bad Movie? Actually - NO! Its kind of fun and goofy...

What ruins the scene for me, and what ruined the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels and the last 2 Fast and Furious movies, is just how overblown and unbelievable the action is. The heroes' actions are timed so perfectly at all times, their abilities change depending on what the current set-piece requires and their reactions to extreme danger or pain are so muted and casual that it destroys the stakes and feels like they're not even there. It would be easy to just blame it on too much CGI, but that only creates an opportunity for these issues. The action choreography and ignorance of believable effects on the characters are the real problem. So while it is a well edited sequence, I can only appreciate it on that technical level, because the emotional stakes only keep getting lower with each "epic" moment and by the time Tonto drops from 20m on a pile of silver nuggets and looks like he just landed on a comfy mattress, I just don't care anymore.

Mattchester Funny because that's actually the exact reason I like them so much. The action is incredibly overblown and ridiculous, but it allows for some really interesting set pieces and imagery.
@matman000000
@matman000000 8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Cipher I think movies like Mission Impossible and Mad Max Fury Road do this so much better. The action is often very over the top and filled with setpieces, but the use of practical effects and stuntwork makes those scenes more believable than the CGI mess of many modern action movies and the characters aren't invulnerable demi-gods, but make mistakes and have to struggle for their victory. The movies set up their abilities and ways how they could fail, whereas in The Lone Ranger or The Hobbit movies, the heroes' abilities seem to be virtually limitless, often completely ignoring the laws of physics, so there's never any tension.
@bloatus7611
@bloatus7611 8 жыл бұрын
It's about one level below the Hobbit movies which treats its characters as child would treat its toys on a playset. You can knock down all the blocks they're standing on but no worries, something else is right there to catch them?!
@kabeltelevizio
@kabeltelevizio 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, MI and Mad Max FR did this far better. This is an impressive train scene, sure, but it never feels like people are in any danger. It's like in Hobbit, where they ran through the goblin cave. It's always, - fighting - new small danger - small danger immediately resolved - more fighting - repeat All these immediately solvable problems make the entire conflict kinda meaningless.
@MrNegativecreep07

Summed it up very well, and that aside it's still a terrible film. It's too long, there are too many plot threads going on, Arnie Hammer is a bland lead, the tone is all over the place and Depp does his Captain Sparrow routine again. Not to mention it being rather questionable that they got a white guy to play a Native American
@markhoffman505
@markhoffman505 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting video. There is also a scene breakdown here on KZbin regarding how the music perfectly accompanies the train chase which is also very interesting and makes me appreciate the scene a little more, too. But the movie as a whole, however, was pretty disappointing. For instance the bookends containing "old" Tonto and the boy were completely unnecessary, sapped the momentum of the film and youthfulness of the character, and only added to an already lengthy running time. Also, the plot was overly complex with just TOO many bad guys (reminded me of how Joel Schumacher ruined his own Batman franchise by adding in villain upon villain in each movie until the final sequel became a chaotic mess). And the triangle love story between the Lone Ranger and his brothers wife? Yuck. Much was made about the practical effects and huge sets, too, but honestly the muted cinematography just made everything look like CGI. I did like Tonto, and of course the musical score, so the film wasn't all bad. But all in all it was very apparent that hubris and ego and former successes and too much money all conspired to ruin what should have been a fast-moving, family-friendly, and truly great movie for the ages.

Indeed not a bad movie in the least with fantastic production values but not the LR i was expecting or the one millions have experienced through radio, tv, and comics. That Lone Ranger is a spectacular character with emotional back story being the only survivor of an ambush massacre on a team of 6 Texas Rangers. There's a lot of other stuff concerning his character but let's just say this movie should've done for the west what Indiana Jones did for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I think the reason this movie did as poorly as it did was because we had just gotten through 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies and everyone took one look at this and thought "Oh, great, Pirates in the Old West..."
@Wlof25

But that is just a prejudice and I think that people are too common to be prejudiced and judge a movie. People are having very silly opinions and taste in movies....for example, every now and then we get a new Furious movie, which is like so unrealistic, so silly and people love it. Ok....there is a movie which supposedly look like Pirates of the Caribbean and people hate it.... I went to the movie with all of the negative critics and I though that movie is going to be bad one, but I was pleasantly surprised and I have no idea why people today are so spoiled or inconsistent when it comes to the movies.

+Wlof25, I'm not saying your wrong but part of it is definitely the fault of the studio and marketing department. Without discussing the merits of the surrounding film in any way, it is fairly obvious that the 'powers that be' wanted to pull in the Jack Sparrow fans with this film. While it is certainly possible to call people spoiled and inconsistent, I don't think it is fair to blame them when a movie is marketed poorly. Guillermo del Toro has an incredibly varied filmography but the studio still decided to market his most recent film, Crimson Peak, as being from "The Master of Horror". The film wasn't received too well by audiences who were expecting to see a horror film when del Toro himself has said that it was intended to be a Gothic Romance. Even good films can be ruined by an audience's expectations, is what I'm trying to say.

MrKingmeander And how was movie marketed? I rewatched two trailers now and first one has a serious tone and second one has it too with jokes from Depp. And movie is pretty serious and there is comedy from Depp. The two common reasons I heard for people disliking this movie is (a) nostalgic one, like...radio show, or old series, or whatever it was, but it was not how they remember it and (b) they criticize Depp, for being too Deppy. Both reasons are flawed. First is emotional reason and we all know that nostalgia can cloud our judgment and second one is irrational one, just because Depp is acting similarly like he acted like Sparrow, does not mean that movie is bad.

+Wlof25, just to be clear, I'm not trying to say that this was a good attitude to have despite feeling that way myself. In theory, every work of art deserves the chance to be judged on its own merit and not dismissed because of an association. However, without trying to speak for the world, when I saw the trailers for this movie, it looked to me like they were just using the star power of Depp to get people in the theater and that made me worry they were going to skimp on making a cohesive film. I just got the feeling that they were trying to make another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel but use a different setting in order to get people to come see it. I'm not saying that's what the movie ended up being but that is why I didn't see it in theaters.

MrKingmeander But that is one of the problem. Second problem is, later on when I heard about movie, I watched you tube reviewers, all I heard is criticism and I thought that I was going into some serious shit, but I was surprised because movie looked awesome, there was comedy, there was action, there were serious moments and story has been told from the unreliable narrator, what was the detail I liked, because it left reasonable space for some over the top moments. That was just another example how some people are just snobs when it comes to movies.

It's not a bad film, it's just far, far too long. Imagine this wonderful finale caps a tighter film; imagine this scene signs off a 100 minute lead-up, making the total run time less than two hours.

Honestly the biggest problem the Lone Ranger has....which is the same the Pirates of the Caribbean sequeals have, is it's too long and bloated when it didn't need to be, and I have a soft spot for the Lone Ranger but had the script be tighter and at 2 hours tops, I don't think it would have gotten panned the way it did

It's just too bad all this wasn't done in a film that understood and respected the characters. You should do a video on deconstruction, the Hollywood goto choice when dealing with nostalgia; how to do it correctly, and how it is often done incorrectly by people who either didn't understand the source material, or obviously had a disdain for it.

Part of the backlash or the reason this didn't get the audience it needed and I agree is that that the film was whitewashed. Johnny Depp is a great actor but casting him as a Native American is hard to swallow and screws the entire movie for me.

I thought he worked well as a delusional child trying to burry his past, and i hold no feelings against the casting as it was clearly done so the director could work with a familiar face, and not because of racial bias.

Reportedly, Depp wanted to play Tonto from the start, because he felt that he could bring something new to an iconic role. His involvement was the biggest reason Disney seriously considered the project in the first place. Without him, its likely the film would never have been green-lit by any studio in Hollywood.

Love your videos but I couldn't disagree with you more! As I love Verbinski, this movie was terrible. Although, beautifully shot, nothing about this movie worked. It deserves ever bit of negativity it got. And putting the Lone Ranger theme on repeat for the last 'action' scene was not only annoying but lazy as a film

mrKWJones They set it up from the beginning though. The first scene with the ranger had the song playing to show the audience that in that scene he was the ranger, but throughout the movie, it was mostly hans zimmer and more generic movie music in order to show that he wasnt the ranger yet. Even when he gained the hat and mask, the song didnt play. It wasnt until the very end when he completed the transformation into the hero of the story that the theme played.

I remember watching this scene, and wishing I could love it, but the fatigue after the crapfest this movie was until this scene, the boring characters and the really bad acting (Hammer and Depp) I just wanted the movie to end. If I had the movie on bluray I could see myself popping it on every once in a while and just watch that scene.

Just wanna say I enjoy your vides very much but I don't agree with this one. So lets have a nice debate about it! What kills Verbinski for me is that his set pieces are huge but the action is small. This and the end fight in Worlds End are big, flashy and loud but the action is small. A lot of stuff is happening but it's all unintresting because I don't care about the characters. A lot of noise is happening around out heroes but thats all there is noise. I never think they are in danger and even if I did I don't care because he didn't get the characters right. Contrast that to the end fight in Black Pearl, the set piece is small (a cave and onborad a ship if I'm remembering correctly) but the action is HUGE! We have great characters with great motivations in a great environment with great music and great stunt work. Don't need the big, flashy spectacle of a fucking waterwheel tumbling down an island (even tho that was kinda cool) to get my blood pumping. Everthing is already there to get me invested. The focus is on the characters not the big flashy thing. Verbinski (or Bruckheimer since he was a producer on both films) always thinks bigger is better, when as we all know most often it's not He is not alone in thinking this, we all know a lot of producers and directors thinks this is the way to go. Big spectacle with noathing in them.. But verbinski started a trend and in a way he created the modern summer blockbuster. What we like about the movie is it's characters not the aforementioned waterwheel (although again it's kinda cool) and when they do have action scenes we care about them. Sorry if this was a rambling mess but english is my second language and trying to make a point when you translate everything in your head isn't always easy. Have it cool and take care! Side note: I always thougt that the gag with Elizabeth and the other two pirates running from Davy Jones crew in Dead Mans Chest was underused. The ide of three people defanding themselfs sharing only two swrods and fighting a group is a great and funny gag that you can expand immensely.

I'm sorry, but this is the first video of yours where I was hoping there was a fake out of some sort in the title. I HATED every second of this movie, and would have walked out, but it was 100 degrees outside the theatre that day, and I was enjoying the AC. It was complete and utter crap from beginning to end, and I thought that it was a career killer for all involved. Loud, boring, nonsensical, insulting, and a total waste of time. I knew I would NEVER sit through it again voluntarily, unless my other choice was water boarding. A well-crafted turd is a turd, nonetheless.

1 A horse running on top of a train is awesome. 2 The entire film is told from the perspective on Tonto, we know this due to the whole film starring with him telling the story to the boy. And being the way he is, he would exaggerate the story, hence as to why some of the action is exaggerated and more over the top. So the horse running on the train and that whole set piece in general being over the top makes perfect sense.

+prisonerofearth So you didn't pay attention to the film or read my comment? The film, or to be exact, everything after the opening scene is told from Tonto's perspective. Again like i said, we know this because Tonto is telling the story about him and The Lone Ranger to the boy. This justifies why a lot of the action is exaggerated, as that is likely how Tonto would tell the story. But if you want to completely ignore that, then be my guest.
