My Dad flew that route in Capital Airlines DC-4's, carrying the construction crews that built the DEW line radar stations back in the 50's. I am overcome by waves of nostalgia, picturing that takeoff and landing in a DC-4! Thank you, Guido!

Answer to Bernardo Reis: You put in 6240N in the Garmin 430. As this is not a known way point, the GPS asks to put in the co-ordinates. That is what i did. You have to be very careful when entering co-ordinates manually. Happy Landings, Guido

Hi Anton, 4,200 fpm is only in the books.... Very seldom you see this climb rate and also this would require a steep deck angle. Passengers do not like it and it reduces you forward visibility. Normally we do 3,000fpm in the initial climb and reach FL410 with 500 fpm. Happy Landings, Guido

Guido, you have one of the best channels for flying enthusiasts. Your videos are razor sharp, you keep the original sounds intact and we love all your extensive explanations (the best part of your videos!), it shows your passion for flying and your urge to share that passion with others and don't forget, you do that in your spare time, when you could be relaxing in a pool! hehe I just wanted to let you know on behalf of all us of that we REALLY appreciate all your hard work and your extensive annotations! Keep up the good work Guido and I'm looking forward to more videos! Have a nice day and happy flying!

Not a pilot myself, but absolutely love flying and have had the experience of flying with an instructor a few times. Much respect to your craft. You clearly are a very thorough Captain and incredibly detail oriented, which I both admire and am grateful for. I used to have an overwhelming fear of flying. At that point, the only logical way I could figure out how to rid myself of this fear is to learn how a plane works, and more specifically if not more important, how pilots so gracefully operate such an amazing piece of machinery. You support my logic perfectly :). Safe flying, and how you say, "Happy Landings".

Another outstanding video with loads of annotations along the way! I noticed in the glare shield camera after departure, and shortly after the climbing left turn, that the Citation 501 continued to gently roll left and right as if to try and capture the GPS course. Were there winds aloft that forced the autopilot to keep correcting or is there a tolerance factor in the precision of the A/P in tracking courses on this particular C501? It wasn't noticeable from the cockpit point of view, only the glare shield cam. Thank you for the time you invest into sharing your flights!
@GuidoWarnecke10 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! We flew the departure "manually" without autopilot and tried to stay away from the big rocks... The A/P normally tracks very well, both on GPS and an ILS. Happy Landings, Guido

Hi Guido. I love your videos. You are one very skilled pilot. Do you think you could make videos that are instructive. Many pilots are trying to get the instrument rating. You would be able to make that many would really enjoy. You could go over preflight walk around, cockpit prefight, communications, all segments of the flight, avionics set up, phraseology, charts and crew coordination. I am sure I speak for many striving for their instrument rating. I know you are busy, but you seem like a concerned pilot in the way you make your professional videos. Excellent video thank you. One point I was shocked to hear was that it was possible to raise the gear ( by mistake) whilst on the ground! Surely there should be a failsafe device on all aircraft to prevent this?
@GuidoWarnecke6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike! There is a protection device called "weight on wheel" switch. When the aircraft is on the ground, the struts (compressed under the weight of the of the aircraft) touch a switch that (should) de-activate the gear system. If you taxi at a fast speed over uneven ground, the struts may lift enough to override this. Also the switch is exposed to the element (on the landing gear) and may fail. Large aircraft have gear pins, that mechanically lock the gear in the down position. The ground personnel removes them. they have big red stripes in them not to forget them before flight. Thanks for watching my videos & Happy landings, Guido

Thanks for another great video. I was wondering if you hear much noise with the "'cans" on? I imagine they're noise cancelling but I"m just curious. Are the flight decks on the Citation Jets big enough. This one doesn't look too bad. In the videos with EA at the end of the call the flight deck looks really cramped. Wonder if it is and if it is if that creates any problems? Lastly I was reading your notes up on the screen. Will the plane allow you to retract landing gear when on the ground? Is it even possible? Hi Guido. Your opening video description says the pilot is Guido Werneke. Perhaps it would be fitting to mention there is another pilot too called the First Officer, as he seemed to assist you enroute. As we know when things go south it is often the person next to you that assists you during emergency and abnormal situations. Sincerely, First Officer Robbo
@GuidoWarnecke9 жыл бұрын
Hi Robbo, generally I agree 100% with you and practice CRM very well as you can see on the other videos. Flying is team work! In this video, however, the flight was "single pilot only" as the person on the right seat has not flown jets before. Happy Landings, Guido

Another great footage Guido, thank you and please don't stop make videos.... I like very much your way, you looks very precise and this is very good for a pilot. maybe one day we'll meet somewhere near London or Milan with my small Cessna 152. Cheers

Hi Guido. I see these over seas flights and do not understand why we still use antiquated position reporting. With satellite technology of today and GPS. Do you think a time will come where all commercial aircraft will have satellite uplink with automatic position reporting. All aircraft would be positively identified and controlled just like any other radar environment anywhere on earth. No more disappearing aircraft.
@GuidoWarnecke9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Fallows You have a good point here. Slowly the aviation authorities moving in this direction. It has to be very safe and protected against failures. Happy Landings, Guido

Another great video sir. You mentioned being careful not to raise the landing gear instead of the flaps after landing. I was wondering if there is a "weight on wheels" switch on this aircraft to prevent gear retraction on the ground?
@GuidoWarnecke10 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Dave. Yes, many aircraft have WoW switches. They may be faulty but the main reason for retraction on the ground is: - taxi on uneven ground, the struts be come out too far - high speed on the landing rollout and wings still generating lift One should never rely on WoW switches. Happy Landings, Guido

Thanks a lot for me virtually flying along with you in a Cessna Citation, and in nice weather over Greenland :-) I especially like how you describe what you do, programming the autopilot and how transatlantic crossings are managed, very interesting ! I also use a GoPro but on a DHC-2 Beaver model plane, and yes it can be disappointing when the camera battery quits just on the nicest flights. But now since a year or so, I use a "Mobius" mini- full-HD camera, can be mounted in the same ways like a GoPro with attachments, and by now you can even get GoPro compatible mounting adapters. (This "Mobius camera costs not even 70 $ when ordered directly via ebay) Now I'm taking a look at some of your other videos :-) Herb
@GuidoWarnecke10 жыл бұрын
Hi Herb, thanks for your comment. The only downside I see with the GoPro is the limited battery life. I lost a lot of good scenes, because the battery quit. Thanks for sharing the info with the "Mobius" camera - I will check it out. Happy Landings, Guido

Hi Guido, Trans Atlantic flying seems like a real blast. There's always something to be monitoring regarding navigation and aircraft performance, position reports to give, constant planning for the next point, and not to mention those beautiful views of Greenland and Iceland. You really have your hands full a lot of the time, especially with shorter (1500 nm or less) trips. I'm trying to understand MNPS more and am confused by the fact that your CJ aircraft was not equipped. It looked like you had a dual gns430, in addition to an FMS. What more would you have needed to be MNPS certified? Is the dual 430 integrated into one "NAV unit"? I'm assuming your FMS is Coupled to the gns and NOT an IRU? Chris
@GuidoWarnecke7 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, the navigation units for the MNPS certification (now called NAT HLA - North Atlantic High Level Airspace) require an RNP of 10 or 4. The Garmin 430 is not certified to have this accuracy, although it certainly can do it. RNP 10 means for example: determine your lateral position within a square of 10NM length, RNP 4: 4 square NM etc.). The Country where the aircraft is registered need to issue an ICAO conform authorization. In the USA they call it LOA letter of Authorization. There is NO radar coverage, so the aircraft by itself must assure that the position is correct. Nobody watches. Happy Landings, Guido

Hi Guido, What a beautiful and educational video; I always learn a great deal from your presentation and comments. What difference (if any) would have been in procedure had you been equipped with a HF radio?
@GuidoWarnecke10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Berry! VHF works only in the line of sight. This means your radio reception range is limited by the curvature of the earth. The higher you fly, the longer is the range on VHF. On this route you have to be above 25,000ft to fly without HF. The only difference with HF is that the quality is usually not good but these longer radio waves follow the curvature of the earth and range is very long. Frequencies have to be changed depending on day or night time, but ATC will give you these frequencies. As there is a lot of background noise in the HF radio, airlines have a system called SELCAL. ATC can trigger a signal to an aircraft, a chime sounds in the cockpit to let the crew know that ATC wants to transmit. Thus, you can keep the squelch down on the radio. Happy landings, Guido
