Guildford Castle: England’s Oldest Castle?

I lived near the cathedral when at university here. I needed to go to the top of the hill, so I missed out on seeing it. You can tell it's n early one due to being so square, like the White Tower of the Tower of London and Rochester Castle. Castles with more rounded towers were better at defence, so this very square style design didn't last long after invasion. Fun fact: Queen Eleanor (wife of Henry III) is the 'my fair lady' in the nursery rhyme London Bridge Is Falling Down.

Thanks for this. As someone born in Guildford, and still living there, I can point out that Guildford is not actually a city (even though a plaque outside Holy Trinity Church described it as such). The football team was also called Guildford City, and many people (including some Guildfordians!) seem to think it is. Although we do have a cathedral, Guildford is still a town (in 2023). This is because the town has never been granted city status by a reigning monarch (although the town has petitioned for this on some occasions).

Its rather sad to say as someone who lives fairly close to Guildford and goes through not irregularly that I’ve yet to actually visit the castle. Should probably correct that soon

That’s why I made the video, I had only been once prior to the video and then it dawned on me I knew nothing about it which then made me sad 😔 the gardens are beautiful!

Built in the wrong place. It was a luxury home for Royalty but of no use from a military point of view.
