I am the parent of an 8 year-old boy, and during the pandemic we saw many Disney films together, both the new ones as well as the classics. GDT's Pinocchio really struck a chord on my boy, and using an empty shoebox, some playdough and his ipad started to spend hours doing stop clay animation about his dinosaur stories. It was rivetting to see him get excited after working for hours on a short story, and see the final product. The more effort the more satisfaction you get. I showed him this interview today, and he teared up and said "I want to be like Guillermo del Toro one day". Thank you GDT for the inspiration, your art and your vision! Greetings from Mexico!!!

It's very rare in modern times when an artist comes on a late talk show to talk about their art without being interrupted or joked about; this interview is one of those rare instances and man, Guillermo del Toro has absolutely floored everyone away, and Jimmy was excellent by giving Guillermo space to talk when he needed to along with asking the right questions. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is the third installment in a trilogy that began 20 years ago. The other two sister films are Devil's Backbone (2001) and Pan's Labyrinth (2006). The three films talk about childhood interrupted by war and the transition to adulthood. They also address the theme of death and life as two sides of the same coin that defines human existence, as well as loss and mourning. All three stories are an essay on disobedience, and a manifesto that defends tenderness and love as a form of resistance. In top of that, all three are set in the era of fascism. The first two located in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, and the third in Mussolinni's Italy. All three tell a dramatic story with a style that ranges from the realistic to the fantastic. In the narrative genre it is called Magical Realism. The Devil's Backbone is a Gothic ghost story, Pan's Labyrinth is a story about fairies and other fantastic creatures, and Pinocchio is a children's tale, commonly used to talk about right and wrong, where symbolism and morals are used to educate the children. Guillermo del Toro spoke about his interest in portraying this type of childhood and how these three installments are connected: "All three movies have to do with childhood colliding with something to do with war and violence. I think for me it's always been the movies about parenthood and being a parent or being a child, and I think in those iterations, fascism seems to be concerned with a father figure of a different kind, and the desire to give ourselves over to a father that unifies thought. So I think it's both background and thematically interesting."

He's almost 60 but whenever he talks about things he's passionate about, he's always emanating this child-like joy. And I love that. Also, the way he talks about his mum, his dreams...

We ALL love Del Toro in Mexico. He is SO talented, funny, interesting, creative, and big hearted. ¡Qué bonito es ver a Totoro realizarse y que le den el reconocimiento merecido! Por mucho, de los mejores directores.

He is truly an amazing director of this generation along with Quentin tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Mike Flanagan, Wes Anderson and Matt reeves who has the ability to generate different vibes around movies. And most of the people seems to know him after shape of water, yes it's the first time he won an academy award for Best director but he was brilliant even before that having directed Hellboy series, Blade 2, Nightmare alley, Crimson peak, Pacific Rim, Pan's Labyrinth. Those movies are his master pieces even though they didn't win any Oscar except for pan's labyrinth and he will triumph through Pinocchio as well, no doubt about that for sure.

You know Jimmy Fallon is actually invested in something when he's quiet. You can tell that he's fully enthralled by what GDT is saying.

biggest inspiration in my life right here. I watched Pinocchio in the theater, and I’m so glad that I did, I sobbed, I cried. The craft and beauty within this movie is palpable, and I’m beyond thrilled to see it’s getting the praise it deserves.
