Leo is one of three kings who rule over their nation of illyria. He gained the position due to his accomplishments in the military during the "Crusades" (a war on living bio weapons called "Gears" that threatened humanity). The name Leo is likely to represent his status as royalty and the sheer amount of confidence and pride they exude at all times. In contrast, this song paints a different side of the character. One that shows them struggling with depression of survivors guilt due to being the last one standing during many of the battles against Gears.

Just gonna throw in that this is Leo's second theme. His first theme from Xrd, Stolz, is a much lighter song much more befitting his outward appearance, but a huge part of his lore is his status as a veteran of the Crusades. He was a cocky bastard when he was younger, and rightfully so. He was a solid commander and a gifted fighter, but on the French battlefields he finally bit off more than he could chew and lost most of his forces in an ambush. Ky bailed him out in the end, but the experience tempered him, and as Hellfire proves also scarred him emotionally. He's become a father to his men and a fine King since, but the blood on his hands isn't going away. This also somewhat leans into his fighting style, too. He has a special stance where he turns his back to his enemy, sacrificing his guarding ability for a counterattack and a much scarier mix-up game. Previously, most people thought it was just his overflowing confidence, sort of a "I don't need to see what's happening to beat your ass" thing, but Hellfire adds a sliver of context that might mean he's just willing to die for the win so he can join his men on the other side. TLDR, Hellfire's actually one of the darker tracks in the game once you attach it to the lore of the game. Stolz is awesome, would recommend. If you want another 'dark' song from Strive, try out Requiem, I-no's theme.

This song is easily the most Queen-inspired song in Ishiwatari's repertoire. The first half takes really strongly after "Stone Cold Crazy", imitating major parts of the song structure. As a side note, "Stone Cold Crazy" is the favourite Queen album of Guilty Gear's main character Sol Badguy, who is pretty much an Ishiwatari self-insert - Ishiwatari even voiced him for a while.

Hellfire is very interesting song because it kind of comes out of nowhere. Leo was presented as a boisterous king full of himself as a foil to Ky more composed and selfless attitude. he wasn't particularly interesting (imo) but he was still enjoyable. Then come Hellfire which shattered the image of this character and revealed he was actually stricken with grief and survivor's guilt, something that nobody expected at all. Hellfire is very interesting and fun to explore, the beginning sounds very regal and harken back to his theme in Xrd which was basically a metal marching band theme. Now, while still boistorous, it's much more rough and follows his inner mind much more. There's a lot of nods to the underworld and death as well, from the lyrics (hellfire and netherworld) to some of the song choices (a sitar, an indian instrument, making my mind think of buddhism and the concept of rebirth). And yet, despite the whole song being this guilt-driven roar of despair, the second solo with the lyrics sounds much more hopeful and defiant, showing that Leo's boistorous personality is not just to hide the pain but to keep going forward and to strive for a better world. This is why Strive's OST is so fucking amazing and important because it unveils the character development and depths of so many members of its cast but also show Daisuke's pushing his absolute limit to completely new heights. It's the good shit. (Also I like the little nod about the Arc de Triomphe, which makes my french ass happy but also is a very nice allusion to the Unknown Soldier tomb under it which is a symbolic grave made for the countless nameless soldiers lost in the world wars, implying that the Crusades was SO horrifyingly worse than those that we can't even make a grave for them anymore, it's fucking hardcore.)

The only truly outwardly dark song is probably be Faust's theme alone infection (it's very slipknot ESC) but your definitely right about most not seeming very dark. You're spot on about Leo having a lion theme, because Leo Whitefang is the king of Guilty Gear's Europe. Referencing a lion being the king of the jungle. And it is indeed true that Guilty Gear sounds intense (In Strive) But this song has very dark lyrics. It's about Leo fighting on the front lines, but his men are dying. He feels guilty for never dying with his comrades. This whole song is about Leo crying out to us about his survivors guilt. Guilty Gear music does get dark in other games. Like Eddie's theme 'Feel a Fear' from Accent Core.

Something that I always try and point out on videos with Hellfire: The tone of the song in the intro and the change as it goes into the first verse At the start it has a very noble and gallant feel and then goes directly into chaotic shredding guitars It can very easily be seen as a parallel to a younger more naive Leo going to join the crusades expecting glory and honor, only to be thrown into the thick of it and realize there is no glory, there is no honor, there is only pain, suffering, and carnage It's very similar to how WW1 went down. People thought it would be a glorious and honorable war like wars that came before, and then the machinegun happened

Guilty Gear's soundtrack has always been a smash hit for me, but Strive elevated it, it feels like actual songs, but the lyrics in particular stand out to me, because I feel like they're entirely comprehensible to someone who doesn't know Guilty Gear (if you can understand what's even being said that is). This song is clearly about some form of military commander, who seems to win, but at horrific cost to his men, and the doubts and insecurities that spring up from that kind of guilt, and all the songs do something like this. It's fantastic.

So an interesting maybe explanation for Leo's gameplay/psychology and the themes explored in this song: part of what makes Leo himself is his very particular style of bravado. A unique mechanic to Leo is that he has two stances, a regular one where most of his moves and functionality of a regular character lie, and a backturn (called Brynhildr) stance where he loses the ability to crouch, block, or jump. The alternate stance has Leo physically turn his back to his opponent as a flex and the moves he's able to perform become a lot more aggressive, his only defensive option in the stance is to either leave the stance or do an active counter move like it was smash bros. Similarly it's expressed in the music that Leo is only at peace when he's in the thick of battle, recklessly risking his life just like he did with his comrades before they were all eventually slaughtered by the enemy (the Gears), because what good is it that he's still alive if not to do what they all came together for (he says to himself)? He's my main and I love this blonde haired gorilla to death. Leo also carries around a dictionary with him, buts it's one he wrote and he's constantly editing it with each encounter he has, I have a completely baseless head canon that the book is actually a bunch of scribbles and Leo is secretly illiterate but just has perfect recollection enough to not let the rest of the cast know.

Leo is slightly related to lions but is just like in a "king of the jungle" style, he is the lion king, he is the one up front, the one doing the roaring and taking the claws out. He's a king and the song lyrics are basically about his pain and guilt about how he leads everyone to death but himself, he acts like he's looking for dead, he WANTS to be killed figthing like the great warrior kings, he wants to go to valhalla with his soldiers, he sees himself as just another soldier in war, but outside of war he knows he is the king and the king has to do the choices even if they're look wrong or in the end are wrong.

I haven't found a song I actively dislike after giving it time and repeated listens to simmer, as well.as digesting the lore and character motivations. There were songs that didn't hit right away for me (Hellfire itself, actually, Trigger, Requiem few others here and there). The more I grew accustomed to metal and the more I embraced the emotion behind the song, the more I grew to love them though, and now I can listen to them all forever. No negativity towards songs has survived 6th or so contact, just due to how much my love of the characters, Daisuke's style, and growing enjoyment of metal blends together to elevate all the soundtrack together. One thing I WILL say though, is that there are quite a few songs that I dislike in the context of a fighting game match. There are the silly ones like Birthday Train or Icarus that just don't really fit contextually, and then here are ones like Neccessary Discrepancy - ABSOLUTE BANGER but the intro goes on and on and the match is done long before the part that id actually jam to while fighting. (Disclaimer - Mirror Of The World does NOT fall intro this gategory for me, unlike a lot of the opinion I've seen. The slow string plucks for round one almost perfectly time the NAAAAANMANNNDABUUUU for the second - still love it even if we don't hit the epic solos at the end.)

My personal least favourite song is "Like a Weed Naturally", but it's a very beloved song by the broader community, although it doesn't hit me like some of the other themes do

There's a few darker songs, but even those are jams. Let Me Carve Your Way, Requiem, Crawl, and Alone Infection all deal with dark subject matter, and are especially poignant in the context of the characters they're about. Still the kind of thing you'll listen to, on repeat, just to rock out.

As for a not so good song for Strive, personally I think "Perfection Can't Please Me" (Jack'O's theme). I've seen a bunch of people rank "Requiem" (Ino's theme) as the worse character theme in it for some reason.

"Requiem" is literally Ino's swan song as she realises she's about to die soon so either they just hate the character or just don't listen to the song's lyrics lol
