So the key A.B.A. holds is a living battle axe named Paracelsus that's in the shape of, well, a key, which she fell in love with due to living alone for years after her creator died in which she formed an obsession with keys. Merely holding it allows him to give you a form of blood lust. But since she loves him & considers him her husband, it comes out in the form of aggressive jealousy. He wasn't alright with it, but the end of their arcade run shows they are taking steps to make their relationship work. Also A.B.A is a homunculus, artificial. So she's not created by normal means. Also, her song can also come across as she was a character from a guilty gear spin off & not regularly created by the creator of the franchise, so she stands out creatively amongst the others.

So here is the lore: Jack-o is a Valentine, a living copy of Aria, Sol's wife. She most Valentines were created by the big bad, but Jack-o was created by That Man. His plan was to use her to resurrect Aria, her overwritting Jack-o soul. Ultimate both Sol and Aria refused. Instead of disappearing Jack-o inherited Arias emotions and memories. In her song you can actually break down the the lyrics into two female voices talking. One is the fun loving Jack-o, the other much more mature Aria, but instead in conflict the two together create something new. A.B.A. is kinda a mess. She was a one off weird character that has almost nothing to do with the current storyline. She is in love with the demon key/axe she is carrying and he is frankly really freaked out by just how intense her love/obsession is. Slayer is a vampire. He is also really involved in the backstory. He is very long lived and while noble and honourable, he goes out of his way to NOT save the day. He is a firm believer in tough love and people having to find the strength to stand and fight in what they believe. Also his wife is immortal, but she is not a vampire. She is an error in the code of the Universe. A normal human woman, who was made into an unchanging constant. They have been together for a long time and are still disgustingly in love in eachother. It will rot your teeth its that sweet. Not a character lore, but vampires in Guilty Gear are other dimensional creatures who can travel between realities. So in the game series Blaze Blue, by the same creators, there is a another vampire that knows Slayer, because they have both traveled between universes.

If I am not mistaken he was talking about Bedman doing the same, deleting his id in the system and in the process stepping outside the circle and becoming an a multiverse being. Mind I think they kept the lore about the vampires vague on purpose. But then again maybe I am mistaken, but I am not Woolie, so I am not a complete expert on GG lore.

Just wanna say that the last one is Slayer's theme which is one of the shortest theme among the characters in there. His theme also the most straightforward kind since it's about him telling us to enjoy our lives in the journey, not in the ending, while telling about his adventures of him encountering the characters in the game before Strives releases like, Sol, Zato & Nago. His background is the most wholesome of all time which is that he is a vampire, a really old vampire that lives throughout the GGST universe. The woman in the video is Sharon the love of his life and the wife to his heart whom have a unique ability of immortality and provides Slayer an endless amount of blood, although he doesn't need much of it in my opinion. He's the founder of the Assassin's Guild, Zato-1's group where he leads them towards the life of dandyism. He's also a fan of poetry especially Haikus and loves to go around the world to find strong opponents to test them. That's how he met Sol and gives him the last name Badguy. His story is a lot of fun to learn about and I hope you guys react to it in the future. ~Dandy

I think Slayer gave him the name Sol becuase of the buring fire he saw in Sol. Sol got the name Badguy when he was breaking into Gear creation facilities and destroying them.

Funnily enough, each of these videos this time around technically featured a couple in love :^p Jack-O' with her boyfriend Sol, A.B.A with her husband Paracelsus, and Slayer with his wife Sharon I totally get why you's forget you already reacted to Jack-O' btw, you guys react to A LOT of stuff, it happens A.B.A's song my actually be my favorite character theme in Strive, it's really good The main focus of it is really A.B.A's huge social anxieties, stemmimg from her being a homunculus (artificial human) who spent the first 10 years of her life in complete isolation. She tries to hide her fear with faux confidence that can lean into aggression, as well as using big words she learned from books, just kinda, fake it till you make it, trying to present herself as being above others (when actually she's scared) which the theme's lyrics also allude to Another thing stemming from her troubled past is her obsession with keys (as they symbolized freedom to her), which lead to her peculiar romance with Paracelsus (the giant key she's wielding), another aspect reflected in her theme In contrast to his current meek appearance, Paracelsus was originally a demonic sentient battle axe, who would brainwash his wielders so they'd slay more people to sate his thirst for blood. "Born" as a regular lifeless weapon, he transformed into a living being due to the influence of blood spilled during the war times. Long after the end of war and he'd been abandoned on an empty battlefield, he was found by A.B.A, who'd dared to go outside for the first time, and she immediately fell in love, thinking the axe looked like a key. Paracelsus was hoping to manipulate her to kill more people for him, but found himself on the other end of the equation, unable to bring himself to brainwash her. Since being with Paracelsus became a major way of coping with her anxieties, A.B.A slowly became violently jealous towards anyone who might try to take him from her. At first this was likely Paracelsus' demonic influence, but in time A.B.A became the dominant and controlling one between them, while Paracelsus became more soft-spoken and calm. After a while, he went from trying to get away from her to find a new wielder to accepting that he does like her company. There is an interesting push and pull with the two, where A.B.A might be overly jealous about Paracelsus, but it also helps her gain a confidence she can't bring up when it comes to just herself. And Paracelsus might've rejected the idea of being with her initially, but truth is that she's the first person who ever saw him as a man, not a weapon, and this ends up permanently changing him-and he realizes he's happier now (like... Vegeta?!) phew

ABA is a homunculus thats uses a key like living axes name paracelsus that became her husband. Her lore is abit confusing. She try to find a way to turn him to a human way back then, now in this one their having relationship problems on aba being so clingy, insane, and problematic on her jealousy. Which affects paracelsus. And slayers a dandy daywalking vampire who train nago, sol, and zato. Mostly nago and zato about dandism. Was the reason nago became a vampire. His wife Shannon is an immortal woman and would use her blood for strength. And his favorite past time are drinking tea and creating haikus

5:30 "Then what can please you?" Imperfection? I see it as Jack-O' feeling "imperfect" without becoming a reborn Aria (long story). The song is about her accepting that, to be happy, she has to be herself. By being an imperfect recreation, she can be her own person. Luckily, Aria feels the same way, and so does Sol. Sol has never seen her as a second chance with Aria, and sees her as a new beginning for his life moving forward. I think it also helps that Sol is FAR from perfect too. He's gruff, hot tempered and seemingly unempathetic at times.

Now that you've heard all these themes, if you wanna get into the story if Guilty Gear for yourselves, I've got a great way to do that! The story of the series up until Xrd is hard to get all in one place, there's so many games and random mangas and drama CDs and stuff like that, however, before the release of Strive, this KZbinr called Woolie Versus released a wonderful series of lore videos that I think is the best most digestible way to experience the story of the old games. Watching all of his videos would catch you up to the very end of the Xrd series of games, however I think a better way to do it would be to watch the first 4 videos, which will catch you up to the events right before Xrd SIGNs story mode, including the arcade mode stories that lead into it. Guilty Gear Xrd SIGNs story mode is basically just a 5 hour collection of cutscenes, zero gameplay, essentially just an anime, you can just sit back and relax. Then, you can watch the beginning section of Woolies 6th video which will tell you the rundown on the arcade modes of Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, and then you can watch Revelators story mode, another essentially 5 hour anime, plus the 3 short bonus episodes from REV2. The story modes of Xrd are all up on ArcSystemWorks youtube channel for free! After that, for Strive it's one more watchable story mode, plus a bonus episode, and then the arcade modes in that game take place after the story mode so you guys could play those as you try out the characters. The arcade mode is basically a series of 8 fights vs computer controlled characters, with some story content on the 1st, 7th and 8th stages, and if you beat the arcade without dropping any rounds you get to go against a secret super hard boss that gives the juiciest lore dump at the end. Most of the characters fight Nagoriyuki as their stage 8 and 9 bosses, but the DLC characters from season 2 and onwards have their own unique bosses and more interesting, personalized stories, so I think those are the most interesting ones. But yeah, that's all my advice for diving into the story of this series, I think at the very least, Woolies video series will be highly recommended by everybody, but I think the individual story modes from Xrd are worth experiencing in their own right! Edit: one extra note, Xrd SIGNs story mode has an English dub, but Revelators does not, and the versions on ArcSys's official channel are both the Japanese dub with subtitles. You can find the English version on KZbin for SIGN but some of the acting is kinda iffy compared to the Japanese version. Strives story mode has both an English and Japanese version tho, and the voice acting, while still not flawless is a lot better, although not every actor from Xrd reprises their role. I would recommend watching it all in Japanese, but if you guys would rather not read then SIGN and Strive do have English options, but you'd still have to rough it out with Revelator.

Funny that Jack-Os theme got listened to twice. It's kind of controversial in the community because there are a lot of people that just cannot accept it being poppy, and honestly I feel like at least some of it just has to be rooted in misogyny, but it's an amazing song! When you get into the lyrics it feels sort of like run on sentences or like they're sort of jumbled up which makes it hard to make sense of them, and that is likely a nod to how Jack-O essentially has two consciousness's inside her. Jack-O herself, and the soul of Aria, aka Sol Badguys deceased lovers, are two distinct people inside one body. Jack-O was made as a stand in until Aria could take control of the body, but she never did, which left Jack-O who had viewed herself as nothing but an artificial being, essentially fake, without a mission. By the way, if you recognize a song in these themes, odds are it was intentional on some level. Daisuke Ishiwatari is a big nerd for classic Western music. One music reference you missed here was Pink Floyds The Wall during the parts of Symphony that went "I'm not here to fit in this world, I just want to make a difference". Anyways yeah you're through all the character themes! There are a couple more lyrical songs in this game tho. The Name of Heaven is the end credits theme for the arcade mode, Talk About You is the credits theme for story mode, Smell of the Game is the main theme of the game, and Rock and Roll, Rock Hard Maniac is the theme for the 2nd season of Strives DLC. Other than that though, for now we're waiting for the season 4 DLC characters to come out. Dizzy drops in October, Venom in early 2025, Unika is planned for spring 2025 (she'll likely release alongside the new anime), and Lucy from Cyberpunk is planned for the summer, and I'd say all four of these characters have tremendous potential for some absolutely magnum opus level character themes, so it's exciting! I'll go over Slayer first because I think I'm gonna get carried away with A.B.A lol. Slayer created the Assasins guild with the intention of toppling corrupt governments, and also to find himself a decent source of blood, but after he met his immortal wife Sharon, he left the guild in the hands of Zato-1, and from there the guild fell into darkness. Slayer has been going in and out of retirement constantly throughout the series, I don't think he can truly stand to sit by and let the youngins have all the fun. He's a big fan of a good battle, and he's very chivalrous, he follows the code of dandyism and passes it down to his disciples like Zato and Nagoriyuki. Slayer is EXTREMELY physically powerful, far above most of the rest of the playable characters, and he has wit to match. It's shown that he holds back when he fights, and it almost feels like he's trying to teach his opponent an honest lesson most of the time. He's a really cool guy, and his theme really shows it. "A happy ending is just a snapshot in time" "sometimes you have to play supporting roles. But what matters is that your eyes shine, in the moment", as a vampire who has lived for more than a thousand years, he has a more informed perspective on life than almost anybody. A.B.A (pronounced Ahbah, like the band ABBA!) is a homunculus, aka an artificially created human through alchemy. She was created by an alchemist named Paracelsus (a reference to the real life alchemist of the same name), but when she awoke in his lab named Frasco, the entire place was abandoned and Paracelsus was nowhere to be found. She lived there for 10 years collecting keys as they symbolized her freedom. Eventually she left Frasco and encountered Flament Nagel, a sentient war axe that controls the mind of its wielder and makes them go on a rampage to spill blood for the axe to consume. The rampage usually ends in the death of the host. A.B.A fell in love with Flament Nagel immediately due to its key-like appearance, and took it as her unwitting husband, renaming it Paracelsus. Ironically during their time together, Paracelsus's personality mellowed out a lot in contrast to A.B.A's bizarre, eccentric, socially awkward personality. She's not amazing with communication but she uses a lot of big words in weird ways, and miss-quotes sayings a lot, a theme that plays into the lyrics of her song. A.B.A and Paracelsus's relationship was not ideal to say the least. Paracelsus took advantage of her love to receive blood prior to his mellowing out, but A.B.A has a tendancy to get wildly jealous of anyone who takes interest in him, and although she spent time searching for a human body for him, she also feared that that would make it easier for him to leave her. By the time of Strive, A.B.A's jealousy has gotten to the point of effecting Paracelsus's physical form due to epic lore magic stuff (look up magical foci on the Guilty Gear wiki if you really wanna know lol), and she realizes if she doesn't get that in check soon, he won't be able to hold on to any kind of shape. After some encounters with Testament and Elphelt she tries to leave him, but Paracelsus tells her that she doesn't have to leave and they can both be better for eachother even if they don't know where to start. To prove to her that they can change, Paracelsus turns BLUE! A.B.A's favorite color. It's a silly but cute moment, and the whole story of their arcade mode in Strive is so good, they've become some of my favorite characters in the series. It's really amazing because their story is really self contained and minor in the series, and they had so few appearances that for awhile whether they were canon or not was debatable, but when they were brought into Strive, they really rolled out the red carpet for them, it was surreal to see. I main A.B.A now, alongside Bridget, and I'm extremely happy with my character choices.

You lost me at misogyny bud. Guilty Gear has some problems with Transphobes (who cannot accept the plot of Testament and Bridget), but Misogyny is very much a minuscule issue in comparison to even that. Not once have I seen an outright woman hater in this community specifically hating on the female characters because of that trait. A lot of people that complained about Perfection Can't Please me also complained about the other more pop-centric song, Disaster of Passion, and the song that tonally stands out the most in Strive, The Town Inside Me. The main issue people have with PCP and DEFINITELY tTIM is that it doesn't work well for a fighting game. Really fits the character, but the energy is very different from most Fighting Game music, and is even different from most GUILTY GEAR music. People similarly complained about the songs being too long (especially about the opening to Mirror of the World). Yet many of the songs belonging to the female cast are considered some of the best if not the best in the soundtrack. Even though Mirror has a long opening, it is VASTLY considered one of the best songs in the soundtrack for this game. Extras is one of the most popular DLC themes, despite it's definitively "girlish" topics, being sang by a woman, for a female character.

Misogyny isn't always completely mask-off stuff, it mostly presents itself as unconscious biases. May, Jack-O, Bridget and Elphelt are all girly female characters who I see get bombarded with accusations of being marketable corporate slop just because they're cute, and people seem to just throw out all of story they have in the series in favor as presenting them as the most shallow versions you could possibly view them as and then criticizing them based on that. Bringing up Elphelt here is hilarious because I definently see it the most with her by far, not with her song (lo and behold, it's the least girly song of those 4) but with her as a character and the fanbase she has. Some people can't stand to see people enjoy her and they have to make themselves heard about that for some reason. Saying things like "why are people drawn to the generic white women of this series instead of (insert hyper-masculine character, I usually see Johnny, Slayer and Nagoriyuki)?", ignoring that most of the girly characters fans are girls themselves, and a lot of them being TRANS girls too. It's probably not easy to notice these things as a guy but for women it's hard to ignore.
