At the time, it was half nostalgia and half because the netcode was better than any other fighter with the exception of GGPO netcode (and I'm aware some people played #R because their PCs weren't able to handle later games). With rollback added to AC+R very few people play #R anymore, including myself. In my opinion AC+R is a way more balanced game, so there isn't much incentive to play #R for me any longer other than occasionally for nostalgia or reference.
