Guinea pig cage cleaning adventures

Cleaning the guinea pig cage always leads to cute adventures! They explore the empty cage like it's floor time and their nails make funny little scratching noises on the cage liner. They wander around wondering where all the bedding went. When it reappears they have to sniff everything!
This cleaning they received a new nesting box design! It has a roof so they can take naps in the hay. And it has extra pieces of cardboard lining the floor. These serve as a disposable absorbent layer for when the moisture soaks through the hay. They like to lay in the hay so it gets moist!

In June 2019 we adopted five pigs from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue. They are cute herbivorous pets with funny social interactions. We film all their behaviors, from cute guinea pig noises to eating sounds, playing with their food to sleeping with their eyes open, and occasional fighting. So far they have been most popular for their loud wheeking and rumblestrutting and their ridiculous guinea pig fights!
MEET THE PIG FAMILY
Spaghett is the boar of the herd. The rest of the pigs are females, but he’s a neutered male so they won’t be breeding. Sorry, no pregnant or baby guinea pigs! Spaghett has orange-brown ginger fur with a white crest on his head and red eyes that are pretty cute. He goes on funny romps with entertaining popcorning and zoomies. He does a hilarious rumblestrutting dance for the ladies while purring. When pigs argue he trots over to comfort them. He likes burrowing through hay and standing on his back feet like a goofy dinosaur. He enjoys petting, especially scratching behind the ears.
Acorn is the youngest. She has white, black, and gold fur with a cute mousy face. She’s inquisitive, always wants food, and talks to herself while exploring hay piles. Little Acorn’s special talent is jumping on houses for rooftop adventures.
Butternut appears either confused or deep in thought. She has white and gold fur. Her hobbies include sleeping and yawning while flopped over with her feet sprawled out. She continues wheeking, squeaking, and squealing at us after we have already given her food.
Pumpkin has black fur except for white back toes. She looks like a cow, a non-guinea pig, and a rabbit. She has noisy standoffs with Acorn when Acorn gets feisty.
Zucchin is the oldest and grumpiest. She has white and gray fur with cute red eyes. At first Zucchin fought with Spaghett. There were teeth chattering, nose raising, and hair puffing battles. Now they get along, but Zucchin is still a grouch. She enjoys lunging at anyone who comes near. She loves to chase other pigs out of their homes, then follow them to another home and chase them out of that one too. But she looks like a cute rat!
THEIR HOME
The pigs live in a semi-custom 4 by 6 foot cage we made by merging 3 Midwest Guinea Habitat cages. We cut the seams of the cage bottoms and joined them into one large cage liner with duct tape and super glue. Now we have a MidWest cage of triple the size! The cage is on cheap folding tables so we can easily interact with the pigs. They first lived in the same 3 cages connected by ramps with DIY ramp covers we made by sewing blankets.
Their bedding is soft paper bedding from Small Pet Select. We spot clean wet spots daily and do a full cage clean when the bedding starts to smell funky. They used to live on fleece blankets with towels and newspaper underneath. Back then we washed guinea pig fleece by hand in the sink. But since moving to a new apartment guinea pig laundry is less convenient so we switched to bedding. We also considered pine bedding but thought soft paper sounded more comfortable for their little feet!
The pigs prefer free stuff to actual guinea pig toys. They love to hide under packing paper. A DIY guinea pig house made from a cardboard box is a favorite hidey. They are not interested in most chew toys but will chew the bark off small willow sticks.
THEIR DIET
Their favorite hay is 3rd cutting timothy hay from Small Pet Select. They nibble hay cubes. But they get most excited about fresh grass. They also gobble up Sherwood Pet Health guinea pig pellets.
They eat nearly any vegetable. The only thing rejected so far was zucchini. Their favorites are dandelion leaves, fennel, cilantro, parsley, banana leaves, kale, collard greens, kohlrabi, carrot tops and roots, beets, bell peppers, corn with the husk, cucumbers, and pumpkin. They go wild for homemade wheatgrass sprouts.
Their water bottle is a 26 ounce Living World Eco+ glass bottle. They drink it all in a day.

Ah nuts- the folks are renovating again. Shavings, no shavings, decisions, decisions. All this waiting around doing nothing is tiring. What's this- new house? Low ceiling and too small. Must be a bachelor pad. Ah the food- let's do some stress eating till home gets back to normal. Yeah the parents are kinda slow but they'll figure it out eventually. Dig in guys! It's Pigs! I actually took tap dance classes when I was younger and ballet! I was the best in tap dance not ballet. I actually stop going to the classes because my grandma got really sick.

Mr. Spaghett worked hard! He had to rest. I cannot believe he was able to sleep when all the bedding was gone and all the women were rustling about! Soooooooo cute! So, Mr. Pig was trying to make something happen with Princess Pumpkin and insanity ensued (and pee was flying! Pumpkin got full of pee!) when all 5 ended up in the hay house. Zucchin was so cute in her own house when all of them were returned and the bedding was clean. You built such a lovely home for them. hehe Butternut looked so confused at time, poor lil lady - she had no idea why everyone was going crazy. And Acorn peaced out of the hay house when it all went down. She didn't want any part of that! She had her own adventures to attend to. This video was mucho adorable and the sound was fantastic! Such amplification of piggy feet along the tarp!

Same; we always had to temp. keep ours in an old cardboard box while we cleaned, bc they always kept standing in the way and trying to get themselves buried in the new bedding as it was put in. They always got treats in the box while they waited, so they never minded terribly. Whenever they got put back, they always explored the cage again like it was brand new; was always cute to watch

I use fleece for my Midwestern cage, I only have to spot clean once a day and wash once a week, it's so easy, I recommend it

We do use a dust pan to clean up the last bits. I guess I (ironically) don't want to get the dust pan super dusty with the bulk of it. We spot clean by hand every day so I'm already used to it.

How long does it take to clean the cage? Have you guys ever tried fleece liners?

The full cleanings are actually faster than our spot cleanings! (We go kinda crazy with the spot cleaning) Full cleaning is maybe like 30 minutes, spot cleaning is probably over an hour a day between the two of us. We used to use fleece, but switched when moving disrupted our laundry system. We're working on switching back though. The paper bedding has been pretty expensive.

Hey it’s pigs, I’ve been subscribed to you for and while now, and I have a question about my piggie. My 1 year old female guinea pig is scared of me (she usually loves me) and when I put her together with my newest female guinea pig, (a few months old) she does a deep purring sound and slowly walks around her while purring. She did that too when I put my arm in her cage to pet her. Ps. My mum told me it was best to keep them in their outside hutch so I did. That’s when it started. Please tell what’s wrong with my baby! 😭😭😭

The purring and funny walk just sound like rumblestrutting to me, ours do it all the time. It can be a sign of dominance but it also just seems like it's their own little language and sometimes they're just saying hi. The amount they do it also fluctuates with their hormonal cycles. I'm not sure about the suddenly being scared of you part. If she used to be inside, maybe she just got less used to having people around?

That takes out so much bedding we end up continuously replacing the bedding over the course of a week. We do a full bedding change every few weeks too, but even then it still does not smell. I think a more standard schedule is to just change obvious wet spots each day and a full clean each week.
