Hello Scousergirl! Try telling people u took a hen to the vet, long ago I had 4 hens, all spoiled and not afraid of me. I did not know what was going on while n the house, on the phone paying my mortgage payment when a hen runs past me, after getting off the phone, I went outside, there stood a little dog that apparently squeezed threw a gap where the gate latched to the post, after chasing it back out, then scoulding my dog for not doing her job, I went looking/calling for the other 3 hens, one was up n the bushes, I helped back out, the other two from hearing me calling for them, one came running, the other who wound up on the other side of the stockade fence flew back up on top, I helped her back down, then I went back n house to look the one n there, I couldn’t find her going n, but on the way back out, she came out from behind trash can walking right beside me, telling me all about it as we walked outside together. Anyway, the little dog had taken a chunk from one of the hens, I took her to the vet, which of course tickled everyone there, chickens r not normally considered to be a pet. She healed, and lived to old age. It’s a shame that some people can’t take off their blinders and realize how awesome it is that other animals can be precious pets as well! Have a wonderful day

Don't you hate the 'just' word inferring your beloved fur baby is nothing! These people are soulless and probably never had the unconditional love of an animal. I look on them with pity as well as distain! No animal should be left to suffer ❤

When I was 16 my sisters and I shared chinese dwarf hamsters. So super tiny and an unfortunately short lifespan (approx 2-5 years). One day I noticed my little bean Pepe’ kept falling off the roof of his house (he liked to sit there in the evenings). Suddenly he was becoming very clumsy and within days was startled whenever he was picked up and was running into things. I suspected he was having trouble seeing. We took him to the vet and sure enough he confirmed he was blind. The vet suspected cancer and we confirmed it was. I had two options…euthanize or try to treat with medications/special care. I loved him very much and of course didn’t want to see him suffer, but at the time I was 16 and I had all the hope that if there was treatment there was a chance. Nobody in my family thought it was strange but when I would tell my friends about it they would laugh and make out like it was the strangest thing in the world. Hearing things like “it’s a freakin hamster, it’s like an inch long”, and “hamsters are like medical experiment tools, why bother?”. It was shocking to me that just because my pet was “an inch long” that meant he didn’t feel pain or that I didn’t love him. As if his size had anything to do with the fact that we had mind or relationship as anyone would with a pet. Granted some animals of course can’t necessarily bond all the way and feel any type of connection to their human counterpart, but Pepe’ was very special to me. He was with me constantly. If I had to get up and couldn’t hold him in my hands, he rode in my shirt pocket. When I laid down, he laid on my chest and under my hair. Thankfully my mom didn’t gave the same mindset as my friends asked me what I wanted to do. I asked her if we could afford it and she told me she would do whatever I wanted, so we started treatment. She helped me give him daily shots and doses medicine every single day. While I was at school she would take care of him all day long, give him his shots and never left him alone. Some nights she actually stated up watching him for me as sometimes I was afraid to go to sleep because I thought he might die and I wouldnt be there. Eventually after two weeks we could see that there was no improvement and that he was actually getting worse and so I finally made the decision to give him rest as I didn’t want him to suffer any longer. But the point I guess I was trying to make is that just because he was super tiny and “just a hamster” didn’t mean that I didn’t love him with all his f my heart. We took him home and buried him in our backyard. As an adult, I’m a bunny momma as (I’ve been obsessed with bunnies all my life) and I I love my bun buns just as much if not more. Snickers is my spirit animal lol, we are extremely bonded. You don’t always get that with every pet, but I’ve been fortunate to have that with mine. If you have a connection to your animal then none of that matters. Bunny owners are more common now, but I’ve been connected to bunnies since I was a baby and throughout my life I’ve heard the exact same things. “Why a rabbit?, it’s not like you can walk it, or do anything with it?” Yes! You absolutely can! I am a huge advocate for bunny treatment and it shocks me that up until recently people had no idea how much like a dog or a cat they could be! My brother no different than a dog… Full access to the house, ability to go wherever and whenever they please, litter box trained, goes for walks on a leash, plays outside, sleeps with us, All of it! Their size, How come and they are, or how orthodox they might seem matters not. People gravitate towards the animal that they feel the connection with. And sometimes it’s a surprising one that you may not expect! It’s your specific, unique relationship with them, and no one else can speak to that, or experience that except for you.
@Munchkin.Of.Pern092 жыл бұрын
I hate people who say “it’s just a guinea pig”. We probably spent hundreds in vet bills on my girls over the years, especially with my first’s tendency towards accidents. They are our babies just like a cat or a dog. If you would spend it for a cat/dog, you should spend it for a Guinea. They are just as precious.

Years ago, my Myrtle had a huge abscess on her side, it turned out from poking herself with a hay stem. My vet had ME lance it and clean it out as I would have to do the "follow-up" care on it. She had dark skin so the stuff in the abscess was nearly black and smelled terrible, and it took nearly a week for the piece of hay to work it's way from the wound with alot of help from tweetzers and flushing with antiseptic. When it was cleaned out, it healed up in about 48 hours and you'd never know it had been there! Absolutely astounding. He told me piggies are tough little critters. In the wild, she would have just scratched it out with her rear toe-nails and bit on it with her teeth, and it would have probably healed on it's own. He was the vet for the zoo, also.

My mother took care of it and she recovered pretty quickly without complications, but it was really horrible. Poor babies.

This would happen to a cat I once owned. He seemed to get abscesses every time he got into a scuffle with neighbor cats (this was back in the day when people commonly let their cats outside). I learned to apply warm damp cloths a couple of times a day so the abscesses would drain before they broke the skin off. I also started keeping my cats inside!

@melissabolton2668 actually if you get a deep bite by a cat, you need to seek medical care straight away. Preferably the ED!! I had 5 canine puncture bites from my fur-baby: 3 required hospitalisation (2 full surgeries to drain), and 2 visits to ed for IV antibiotics then home.

Something I can recommend, in case someone has a rodent (or other animal) with an abscess at home is to look and see if there is a possible wound or scab anywhere in the abscess area. Sometimes those occur if the abscess happened due to an injury (or due to the animal scratching the abscessed area so that a scab develops), and those can make the job a whole lot easier. Soaking the scab with warm water (not hot, just warm) will loosen it up so that it can easily be removed, which may actually cause the whole abscess to empty out. I have handled many abscesses in pet rats and one guinea pig like this. Of course, if there is any doubt whether the lump is an abscess or something else, always consult a vet. But sometimes, if you're lucky, these will be treatable at home, which will stress the animal less. Well done with the video, by the way!

My girl had this happen. They kept saying it was a molar causing the abscess and it kept coming back. Then the tumor broke through the skin and we realized they were wrong about the cause. It got to where we would drain it at home because the rides to the vet were so traumatic. Then we'd call for more antibiotics. But once the tumor was big enough to break skin, she couldn't eat anymore. She made it two years fighting that while we were unaware it was a tumor. She let us know she was ready to go and we said our goodbyes.
