Guinness's business model used to be selling the books, so they were incentivized to keep the categories interesting otherwise the books wouldn't sell. But because of the internet nobody buys those books anymore, so Guinness had to shift strategies. Now their business model is taking application fees from people who want to get famous, they can go up to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the category. No wonder why the new records are shit.

That also created a problem that I am really surprised Grade haven't talked about - some records being pay to win. Some of the already existing obscure categories are fairly easy for a normal person to beat, but the application fee is not worth it, so the entire record is about who is the last one to buy it.

A friend of mine holds the Guinness World Record for longest career as a gravedigger (72 yrs) and when he started his job, it was settled with a handshake not paperwork, and Guinness wouldn't accept that, they needed a document to prove it, so my friend's brother, who was about 12 at the time my friend started, had to sign a paper saying he was there when it all began. It was the biggest pain in the ass for him to get in the book, but its pretty cool for everyone who knows him.

@@Sanquinitywhen i watched him when i was younger he was super energetic, and everything seemed a bit more colorful, i guess. i watched a recent video, and he was wearing beige headphones, sitting in a sad looking room, and he has a beard now i think, and there was no loud slapping noise or "top of the morning to ya laddies" either... it makes me think of how mcdonalds went from having red roofs with yellow lines on them to looking like a boring boxy beige and brown coffee shop... atleast RTgame exists, somehow he manages to be funny without cussing a lot, but god i miss the cussing... damn the advertisers! I liked that he didn't shy away from cussing, had an irish accent (it's a little bit sexy imo), and he had a lot of energy, but not in the "hyper hyper 100 jump cuts in 1 minute" kind of way. He's still nice to watch from time to time. But he doesn't upload a lot anymore, and most of his videos are now blocky/low res graphics indie horror games. He matured, for sure. And all power to him, having his channel grow with him rather than trying to keep cashing in on his persona from his earlier days. But I still miss old Jack.

And a man in Spain who consumed 40 pints of wine in 59 minutes (nope, we don't monitor that anymore either).

I believe they don’t record records like that because it endangers lives and they don’t wanna promote pursing a record breaker. For example, although Andre the giant likely holds the record for most alcohol drunken in one sitting (his size has reportedly granted him the ability to drink as much as multiple liters without death) Guinness refuses to document that out of fear that people would die of Alcohol poisoning trying to break it. Sad but sometimes they do have to act responsibly. Though I would love to see them document those kinda things under a “do not try to break these records” category.
