Guinness's business model used to be selling the books, so they were incentivized to keep the categories interesting otherwise the books wouldn't sell. But because of the internet nobody buys those books anymore, so Guinness had to shift strategies. Now their business model is taking application fees from people who want to get famous, they can go up to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the category. No wonder why the new records are shit.

That also created a problem that I am really surprised Grade haven't talked about - some records being pay to win. A friend of mine holds the Guinness World Record for longest career as a gravedigger (72 yrs) and when he started his job, it was settled with a handshake not paperwork, and Guinness wouldn't accept that, they needed a document to prove it, so my friend's brother, who was about 12 at the time my friend started, had to sign a paper saying he was there when it all began. We've always chronicled all kinds of fun human endeavour, no matter how unusual - as well as the more 'serious' stuff. Some examples from our first edition in 1955: a record for the longest time keeping a smoking pipes alight (it's no longer a category we monitor), the longest ‘rockathon’ on a rocking chair (92 hrs), jumping barrels on ice, eating the most raw eggs, pole-squatting (sitting on top of a pole). And a man in Spain who consumed 40 pints of wine in 59 minutes (nope, we don't monitor that anymore either).

Sad but sometimes they do have to act responsibly. Though I would love to see them document those kinda things under a “do not try to break these records” category.

Once you consider the fact that the Guinness World Records was made by Guinness to settle bar disputes about "who can do the most x" it becomes easier to understand why all of these world records sound like something a drunk frat guy in a bar would think of.

I remember when the most impressive thing I've seen someone do for the Guinness Book of World Records was front flip over a car at full speed, no wires at all.
