Amazing guitar battle between Steve Vai and Dweezil Zappa, in the Zappa plays Zappa DVD concert. (And an awesome saxophone solo, performed by Scheila Gonzalez :) This is the solo of "More Trouble Every Day", from Zappa.

The only problem with Vai, is that he's so incredibly fluid at technicality. he's so technical all the time that his licks can sound like there is no emotion behind it. Almost as if an animatronic robot is playing the guitar, programmed with all knowledge of infinite scales, and programmed to play on key but intermingling every possible note of every possible scale. Go listen to him play "blue powder" where he slows it down. He is good. Very good. and has a unique style all his own.

Vai is undeniably among the legendary, a guitarist's guitarist, the quality and clarity of those D'amarzios is flawless, if you discover any type of amazing electronic sound phenomenon and can apply it to the guitar, Steve Vai is the first person you'd want to share it with, because he'd dicover it's maximum potential! My point, Dweezil has not summoned his full potential, I love the twangy brassy sound of those oldchool humbucklers, the utilized sharp to flat clashing to break up the harmony grabs attention, its a style, id like to see more from Mr . Zappa, I believe Steve Vai is the key to unlock the genius that remains unshared.

Believe it or not, 'tone' mostly comes from how you (the player) actuate each note. Density of the the wood (giggity) plays a big part, so do pick-ups, amps, effects...way too much to even make the simple statement that one "sounds 10x better", because of one or two elements, like, choice in guitar and what "sounds better", is only relative.

Saw this go down in San Francisco in 2009. Same band, super impressive. If you get a chance to see Dweezil don't miss it.

Agreed, I caught this show(sans Vai) with Dream Theater, Bigelf and another band whose name escapes me at the moment, it was beyond cool. His band was tight, the vibe was throbbing, the groove smooth as a baby's ass. Dweezil did complete justice to his dad's work, I walked away totally impressed.

When you put things this way, SG is obviously better sounding guitar.
@TheSkipjack9511 жыл бұрын
Thier respective rigs and sounds are not designed for the same purpose. Dweezil is trying to recreate his dad's sound, while Steve uses his sound, developped for his own artistic vision. I agree that dweezil sounds better here though

Depends on what they're going for. Too much tone will restrict Vai-style extreme acrobatics on the guitar and vice versa.

I was at this show....they are both great players.

I actually enjoyed this. Vai is his usual self. Dweezil absolutely killed it, hands down! Nice tone from the SG and his technique is superb. One of the better guitar duels a person will see on youtube...

like Dweezil, if he was lucky. Frank was the best guitar player in the world until Dweezil grew up. Frank brought him out on the last tour and had him solo over stairway to heaven. mind blowing and that was back in '91.
