On this day of the Dallas International Guitar Festival, a dealer says "they've loaded us up" with new Gibson and Fender guitars. Claims there are too many on the market and prices are crashing. Plus, we'll check out possibly the first ever 7-string guitar ever made, and see a super rare MicroFrets guitar and Rickenbacker M-30 Ek-O-Sound Tube Amplifier.

I would agree, except that phenomenon is explained as stemming from selective attention and confirmation bias. My experience is that it reeks of a more spiritual singularity, not unlike the feeling one gets when one experiences deja vu. Almost like God is winking from just behind the veil of an illusory world. The odds of encountering my very first Microfrets guitar in my entire 35 year guitar career and then hearing about them from a friend mere days later is a coincidence that's hard to put a statistical figure on.

Prices probably are not going back to where they were before they printed all that money. You might find the occasional deal, and prices generally will have to come down to earth, but this is going to put a lot of builders out of business. People just don't have the disposable cash on hand.

They ~aren't~ selling at those prices. Those are the _asking_ prices (what's written on the tag), and they just peaked about a month ago... for WAY too many used guitars. Nobody wants most of them at even half the asking price, because most of them were never desireable even 'back in the day'. _They're just OLD GUITARS._ So in their case "Vintage' means fuck-all except to draw casuals who don't know what they want. And they sure wont want to pay $3000+ for an old guitar they've never heard of. Only the most special/unique guitars will hold or rise for the foreseeable future.

I've been saying for a long time the guitar industry makes no sense. There is no way there are as many buyers of new guitars as there are new guitars made every day. Then, factor in all new guitars are competing against every used guitar ever made. (How many guitars are ever truly lost or thrown away?) Imagine being fender and having to reinvent the strat every couple of years without really deviating too much. Then, consider all of the parts guitars made and the "I'm a Luthier now" journey almost every guitar player goes through. Individual collections can only get so big and there are fewer new players every year. Somethings going to give sooner or later, and Boomergeddon will probably flood (every) market.

Oversupply is a fundamental dynamic and makes for a buyer's market. If it didn't, prices would always go in one direction _only_ - and that would suck for everyone. It makes total sense right now. _They built more than the market can bear, so now their short-term Incentives cannot exceed constraints(debts)._ Even if a builder or seller is currently debt-free they will need enough sales to offset operating at a loss AFTER downsizing, just to compensate enough to stay in business amidst high inflation. Prices have to come down for the foreseeable future, and some consolidation and merger/buyouts are going to hurt some folks and (potentially) help some others.

The guitar market is like the car market. few people want an American made one when the foreign competition is just as good and much cheaper. KZbin content creators have shown that the cheaper guitars play and sound just as good as Gibson and Fender. Less expensive wood works just as well and is lighter. Chinese and other Asian quality control has improved because most everything is made with robotics so they get consistant quality every time.

That guy at the GO pedal board booth. He is a good guy. I was in the Kentucky flood a couple years ago. Lost everything. Family drowned. I posted a pic of the damage in a music group and he contacted me and gave me one of those. Then all kind of people messaged wanting to send pedals and stuff. But, I didn't take anything else. I didn't have anywhere to put it at the time and i was dealing with the loss of my aunt. And I didn't want to seem or feel like I was taking advantage. I debated on accepting his gift at first but he was adamant. He just said he wanted to send me something. I gave him my address and he sent me one of those boards with things to go with it and two pedals. From that one act, I'm still working til today, but I finished rebuilding about all of my guitars and most of my pedals, I fixed. Actually saved one of my amps. The crate. Say what you want about crate, they are built like tanks. The fender and the Roland fell apart. Used to have a marshall, two fender amps actually from the 60s and and old Gibson amp when I was young. Lost them in a different flood. But the last flood was more like an act of God it was so bad. Anyway. That guy, is a good guy. And his stuff is good. God bless him. Simple acts of kindness. And I'm not jumping on you or trolling, just some advice, don't get political. It's not smart in your biz. In the words of Colonel sanders when someone once asked him to run as their vice, are you f'n nuts? I'm trying to run a business here. Why would I want to piss off half of my customers. I'm just as mad as you are. Most people are. I think we all tend to blame different reasons. Looking for simple answers to complex problems. I'm not going to get into my views. The guitar markets is like the downhill skiing market. In skiing, you have to be introduced to snow skiing. Usually your family will be into it or you school will have ski trips. Over the years, the ski market has died. Few ski stores are open, many mountains have closed due to lack of business. When I go to the ski shows it has become smaller and smaller over the years. Just like this show, people sit around and look at one another. With guitars, only the country music market is active, the rock market is dead, mostly recycled classic rock is played in most markets. so is the dance music market where you see people dancing on stage, not playing instruments mostly. Kids don't listen to music like they did in the 1970's and 1980's. No record stores now.

The "two-tone" Jaguar you mentioned at 54:23 is a normal sunburst example with a "Parker body guard" attached to the back. This was an accessory sold by Fender that protected the back of the guitar from buckle rash. Ironically what it achieved instead was usually marring the finish on the sides of the guitar since the foam badly interacted with the lacquer finish.

But what happened to Greg Burriss,he's nowhere to find, like disappearing into thin air.

Correction is coming. There’s too much out there and the economy is going the wrong way. I wonder how many actual sales were made to the general public, and by that I mean a sale to someone who doesn’t have a booth at the show. I suppose the point isn’t always to sell, but it always seemed strange to me for someone to pay the booth fee, transport and set up and then tear down their gear, take time to man the booth and be at the show, and then overprice everything and not make a sale of substance.

In my opinion, the biggest problem with the current guitar market is all the light brown, grey and red fretboards. Companies have seemingly all started using the worst pieces possible for their boards. I’ve never seen it this bad. It’s like a conspiracy. Not a dark board to be seen across the entire internet for months now. All those Gibson Mod Collection guitars totally RUINED with bad fretboards. A guitar with a light fretboard is worth $0 in my book. lol

In Australia we don't have anywhere near the options for gear as our friends in the USA do. I'd have no problems paying those Guitar Festival prices given how ridiculously expensive prices are here in Australia. A refinished 64 Strat here is anywhere between $40k to $60k. 70's strats and Teles are well over $10k now as well - and that's for ones in poor condition.

I think that during the pandemic and the lockdown, people bought a lot of guitars. I know I did. (I bought 20+ guitars) guitar sales went through the roof so fender and Gibson increased production to keep up with the increase in demand. Now that theres no more stimulus checks and people are out of the house, they aren't buying guitars like the word is ending. Now there's a massive surplus and they haven't slowed production. Warehouses full of brand new guitars. Increased supply and less demand should drive the prices down. my 2 cents

As a kid in the early sixties, sitting around for hours playing the new Fenders, I realized early on that some of those assembly line guitars were complete dogs with as much resonance as a wet cardboard box. I loved the look of Jaguars but they sucked as did some strats. $325-375 was a half month's pay for my dad. A few years later I got my first used SG special, white w/ vibrola for $250. 100 hours of minimum wage pay but worth it. My 58 Gretsch 6121 was beat to hell but $125, still have it 40 years later.
