Whenever I play live, I realize things sound very different on the venue than when I practiced with headphones at home. So I really sucked on my first bigger gig. (I have a project called Ace Buchannon and I play some small / mid-sized clubs like Ääniwalli and Tiivistämö) Then I realized the best way to "hear myself" on the venue is just to practice like hell. Like, if you feel confident with your set, then practice at least the amount you've already practiced to be doubly sure.

The trick about monitors is golden :) I was always telling the sound guy to get rid of my guitar of my monitors, I need to hear myself only from my amp.... otherwise it is getting fast to loud and whole sound is a mess on stage. I need only kick drum in monitor and some snare.
