Guitar legend Steve Cropper is one of the hit musicians and songwriters behind many of Stax Records' soul and blues hits in the 1960s and 1970s. He recalls how he came up with the signature intro lick for "Soul Man" and performing with Blues Brothers John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. (Dec. 30)

Steve Cropper gives interesting insights. I recall one interview in which he revealed that the Stax house band were naturally looking to produce up tempo money making hit records which of course is what they were there for - including Otis. And why not! This permanently dispelled my romantic illusion of the music industry. (like when we project our emotions on to a song) But again according to Cropper it was Jim Stewart who insisted on cutting the soul ballads that probably define Otis's style more than anything else. Not saying that those ballads cannot sometimes be from the heart -they are poetry - but professional musicians perform for a living first and for the message second.

Love Steve Cropper. Not digging his guitar tone here though. Did AP tell him to turn it down?
