I just want to say that this is the best thing that's happened to me as a guitar player. I have loved and listened to James for years and grew up with all of his songs. ( and also Joni Mitchell's) There are so many artists out there that are so secretive about their music when it comes to letting anyone learn their songs or just the chords. I applaud James for sharing and teaching his music with all of us.There can never be and never will be another that compares to James' music. You can hear three or 4 notes of a song and immediately know it is James Taylor playing. His picking technique is phenomenal. So thank you James Taylor for for making it possible for all of us to learn these wonderful songs that have filled our lives for so long !!!!!Your the best!!!

I started playing guitar 4 years ago because of James Taylor. His playing style is too hard for me at the moment. But I will learn “fire and rain” sometime. I started listening to James 20 years ago. When I was dating an American girl in my country, New Zealand. She was home sick and would listen to James Taylor. To make her feel closer to home. I caught the bug and have listened to James ever since. He is the most sincere storyteller and as I’ve learnt on KZbin a really decent man. Sharing his way of playing guitar. I’m not sure if James has toured in NZ? But I’d be the first in line to get tickets.

The often overlooked brilliance in J.T.'s work is that he writes in a limited number of keys, all of which fall into a comfortable vocal range that has allowed him to continue as the primary vocalist when performing (unlike others who can no longer execute vocally the way they could earlier in their career). I've been to at least seven J.T. performances over the years and he never disappoints. Though it's a challenge to pick "favorites" with subjective media (art), I've always felt that the "JT" album was a pinnacle in his body of work. Turmoil in an artist's life almost always results in exceptional art. Thank you, James, for all you given us!

My brother and I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina the first part of our youth, and then ended up in the Research Triangle area to finish junior and senior high school there. On one occasion during a high school field trip we observed a young fellow sitting on the "Wall" at UNC in Chapel Hill playing a guitar. He was surrounded by students. We later were told that his father was a Dean of Medicine there and they thought his name was Taylor or something like that. While in college in Virginia I once received a letter from my brother who was in Europe at the time. He wrote that he was sitting on a beautiful mountain top in Switzerland enjoying good French wine and eating blueberries. And then he admitted that he was missing North Carolina. I knew what he meant. If you love this song and admire Mr. Taylor you are in good company. But I have to tell you that if you are a boy from Carolina this song carries with it emotion and yearning that borders on being painful. We love James Taylor more than words can express. To many who know the ache of a hollow heart yearning for home this song is a sweet lullaby.

Dear James, thank you so much for doing this. I see there are no ads so you must doing this for free, that's an amazing beautiful act of sharing that means so much to so many people. Your songs are quite hard to work out on your own or using tabs, I always had the feeling I'd be missing some special tuning or techniques so it would never quite sound right, now I can see exactly what you are doing I can finally play them correctly. I've played guitar for about 25 years now, not particularly well technically I guess, but I love to play and to sing songs that I like, there is a kind of pure beauty or emotion in playing music, for a short time at least I can get totally lost in that feeling, one of the best parts of being alive. What you are sharing is not just how to play some tunes, but the chance for fellow guitarists to connect with you and your music on that emotional level that comes when you play the song well, it's like a pure exchange between humans on different level. Finding this has really made my day, to see someone just freely sharing something beautiful and valuable, just for the sake of sharing, it's wonderful to see the good side of people and life, reminds me what is important. Slightly cringey comment perhaps but damn I am impressed by this, it means a lot to me. This is my first youtube comment in years. All the best to you James.

This is so damn cool and generous. I've noticed over the years that all guitar players have little idiosyncrasies in how the play and if you can spot what they are it makes it easier to play their songs how they do. A backwards A and D so he can hammer on underneath them, simple and genius. Now that I see it I can think of other places he uses that in other songs. Most professional players are reluctant to share their stylistic "tricks" but no matter what, no-one will be able to play and sing these songs better than James Taylor. Just a fact. So he's safe I think. Thanks for making and posting these. Peace.

Those D and A non-standard fingerings probably solved 90% of the mystery in James's playing.
@TheZacdes
@TheZacdes 5 жыл бұрын
It does"nt really matter, everyone has their own way of doing things. The song can be learned and played with the usual way of fingering chords. James does love his hammer ons on A and D,lol. I can do the same with the normal finger positions on A and D, though ive always used the same way of playing G as he does. It sounds better, and if you start with D and lock down the ring and pinky you can move very fast to C and G. Once you get used to it a lot can be done with all chords:) His rundown progressions are beautiful and a pleasure to learn and play:) Very generous of him to show the finger positions so well. Its VERY hard to get this right without this lesson, I know very well as ive been trying to duplicate it on and off for years, in this and other songs of his. This has me racing ahead towards getting it right, which makes me very happy:) About a third down pretty well, but I wont be satisfied till I can "nearly" duplicate it. We all have our own way of doing things so it will involve some of my own ornamentation:)
@douglesw
@douglesw 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheZacdes Thanks for the confirmation on the D and A fingerings, that was my thinking. I can get the pull offs and hammer on using the standard positions. As for the G I just use my ring and pinky to cover the B and E strings at the 3rd fret rather than the ring bar. This gives me more options with the pinky to PO and HO.
@TheZacdes
@TheZacdes 5 жыл бұрын
@@douglesw I do the same man, always have preferred to play my Gs, Cs, even E minors with ring finger locked in the D position, raising and lowering the little finger on the E string as needed! The D C Gs played this way are so fast to change between for alternate bass note picking country stuff like "duelling Banjos" for instance.[where your picking four strings fast for the bassline back and forward from G to C, and D! The hammer ons and pull offs here as you say are easy enough with normal fingering. I wonder how James came to play these chords in such a finger twisting, torturous way,lol. Makes it hard to see the middle bit of the rundown from D, his fingers are in the way and it took me HOURS to get the same sound as James! I play a variant of it now that I like better. There are many ways to go with that rundown that sound great:) The hardest part of James songs is learning the walking bass lines he makes look so easy,lol. If you like Knopfler, try "privateering", he does a lesson on it that's very helpful, its still bloody hard, and fast. To get it to "click" takes time but when you do its seems easy[many hours later..ohh, that's how its done,lol]. Only after I got it right I realized I"d been playing something similar[the fingerpicking] for years:) Fire and rain is another good one of James, bit easier than this, but as it had two chords[the initial ones] I was unfamiliar with, it took a while to get them smooth[more knowledge in the head and fingers], the internet..man, I wish I"d had it 40 years ago, it was a LOT harder learning then:)
@Sabaka1954
@Sabaka1954 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheZacdes I understand how you can leave your ring finger on the third fret of the B string to play a D note in your G and E minor chord, but I'm not following you on how you can leave your ring finger locked in the D position and play a C chord. Do you mind explaining? Update: You must be talking about Cadd9 chord.

There's a really cool chord inversion near the end of the bridge, after "you must forgive me" that I've never played. I'm not sure what to call it even...if the A (ignoring the capoing) on top is the root it is a 6, b7, 4, and 1. It gives a really nice accent to the song, and I'm going to play it that way now. I feel your pain. I grew up in southeast VA and NC. Stuck in CA for last decade. This song always takes me back to the simpler, easier times. Copperline, also. :)

I would just like to say that these tutorials are absolutely the greatest thing any musician the ilk of Mr Taylor can do. It shows that the class of the man is unbounded. James you're a true hero. I can only aspire to play like you. You're one of my biggest influences. If you're ever in Cork, Ireland look me up and we'll go busking. With your guitar playing, and my singing, we'd make a fortune kiiid!

Highly generous of James Taylor to share his music and picking style. I still have many of his original albums, scratched and weathered over time though they are. Music is now digitized and I don't have a working record player needle, but I haven't thrown the platters away.

Amen. I was amazed at James putting out such a video on youtube. His persona is like he is right there in the room with you. Yet he has let us into "his" room. A very gracious man with a wonderful spirit. Learning this song because so many people have asked if I do it. I am not that good at guitar but James has uncovered a lot of mystery here about his technique. Thank you Mr Taylor. I will dedicate this song to you when I sing it at my pub gig.

I don't play Guitar, but JT has been a favorite of mine since he first hit the scene. This was incredibly fascinating, and gave me more insight into the beautiful guitar always present in his music.

...many miles on the turnpike, watching the colors turn or dusted with snow listening to JT; they are the soundtrack of all my Cape experiences. Great video production. And it's amazing to finally understand the picking lines up with the funky fingers for As and Ds - that's crazy. Thanks for putting on so many great shows, writing great songs and inspiring so many.

your first album i bought was "Sweet Baby James". your first concert i saw at the open air "Pine Knob" theater in Clarkston Michigan. "In The Pocket" was just released. you walked out onto the stage barefoot, wearing white pants and a tshirt. to watch you personally demonstrate and share your magical touch is slice of heaven for me, all of heaven best back to you James. thank you so much.
