Alright Marty I have been wanting to comment on one of your videos to let you know how precious and how helpful you have been through my guitar journey. I mean I am on the other side of the world sitting and listening to what you are teaching “ME” and all others. I started watching your vids on guitarjamz 6-7 years back when your beard was all black and when I got my first guitar and was learning my first chords. Played for a few years and then got some gap in between due to country change and business and stuff and now I am back and you’re still here! I mean man! You have your own channel now and your beard is turning white you have no freakin’ idea how much I appreciate what you are doing. Consistency is the key my man! And the amount of time you put out for me and all of us is what everyone should be thankful for. All these people learning from you on youtube and others here on websites tend to say “I am a self taught” with that weird smile on their face but when I am asked, I proudly tell them that my first ever teacher was Marty. And they be like, what? Who Marty? I am like “He is from US and he uploads guitar lessons especially for me” haha. I mean for me you are teaching me only. I really appreciate that man! You rock! Hope to see you and have a jam together one day! Keep up the good work! Edit: This comment is not to win the solo courses for sure. I will pay for that cause you deserve it 👍

This chapter of guitar is so TEDIOUS! I’ve got all the chords down and I have strumming in rhythm down, and I can even play some pretty syncopated fingerpicking songs. Alternate picking individual strings and notes is a skill that requires so much work.

@ejordant2000 I just happen to be looking at alternate picking vids as we speak. 6 months of practice and I still seem to be struggling. I can do some alternate picking in E blues and drop d on acoustic but it’s still such a mess. Downpicking is a hard habit to break.

@@RaspiRoope I’m doing a lot better! Alternate picking has allowed me to actually start doing a few quick bluegrass and rock licks in a few different keys. Still painful but gaining a lot of dexterity and starting to match the rhythm of the left and right hand somewhat.

A good riff to play to help with this idea is the bass-line to "Chick Magnet" by MXPX. You can play it on the E/A strings for guitar, but it's 10 notes on 4 frets and has a swing feel to it, making it a lot of fun to play. It doesn't even feel like you're practicing.

What also helps is a metronome. Playing these sequences as groups of 6 notes with a slower beat feels different than 3 notes per beat. If your timing is off by even a millisecond in a solo it sounds sloppy. Using a metronome will allow you to blend these delays due to string changes so that the missed time is not apparent.

Hey Marty, it would be awesome if you did a post on gallop picking for metal music. Like the intro to Metallica's "Battery". I'm holding my pick wrong or something because i'm often catching the pick on the strings rather than hitting the 1/16 notes. If I hold the pick in to far I'm hitting my thumb too much. It would be great to get some pointers on the proper tension and pick holding.
