Many thanks for the info on this Randy! I had an acoustic guitar bought for my 71st. birthday on July 23rd. I have been welding and engineering for over 50 years, so my fingers are pretty tough! However, learning has been agony as I have been practising nearly every night for an hour or more since. I had thought that I may never be able to play because of the pressure needed to fret the strings. I had adjusted the truss rod but didn't know about the nut. I checked the distances on the first fret and they were 30 - 40 thou on the thicker strings! I have filed the nut grooves down like you have shown on you video, using a set of welding tip cleaners, which were ideal as I could match the thickness of the strings. The guitar is now so different, as I don't have to use anywhere near as much pressure. Much appreciated, from across the pond!!

I feel your pain, Mo. I am just learning at 58 years young, and the action on the guitar my wife bought me is higher than the Golden Gate Bridge. Speaking of bridges, mine's lifting, so no adjusting anything until that's laying flat. I'm looking forward to getting my guitar to play with a light left hand.

Randy--THANK YOU for this video. I had to cut/fine tune a replacement nut (pre-slotted tusq) on my Godin Folk acoustic after a guitar tech cut the original too deep. Thanks for taking the mystery out of this and showing, in a very practical way, how to do this procedure. I swore I'd never touch a nut on a guitar for fear of f&*$ing up, but I just did it and it plays and sounds great! Thanks again, and blessings!

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve had bad work done on my guitars in the past when I have taken them to shops, so now I do most of my own work. I feel it’s just good to know your instrument and how to do all the little things yourself. I just recently changed out the nut on my guitar, and I have the strings slots fairly close, but this gives me a better idea where to adjust them to. It is amazing how much more complicated some of the write ups are compared to what you just showed. Thank you again!

Hey Randy! I tryed silk & Steel strings for the first time about 6 months ago, I put them on my 70's Ovation Legend and I love them! I love the feel! I wasn't sure how they sound on the Ovation but I love them! I've tryed all kinds of strings styles and personally I like Martins and Dadarrio's. I love the lowest action I can get! one of my favorite electric guitars is a 1970 5120 (like a 335) and i've got the action at the nut at 8! and 3 64th's on the low E at the 12th with pretty flat relief!! Thanks Dale! There usually isn't much radius in the fretboard at the nut but what little there is you can be assured the strings follow it, if the saddle radius is right then the strings follow the radius of the board all the way down. I like that idea pretty well. Thanks again for checking out the video!

I can't bring myself to stop using the old fashioned one my mom bought me 20 years ago for high school machining. For steel string guitars, the force the strings put on the guitar from the headstock to the bridge is between 90 and 200lbs depending on string gage and tuning. Imagine you have six strings connected to the tuners and you hang two 90lb gym plates on those strings pulling down same as if they were connected to the bridge. That's what's going on. As far as the guitar sees there's zero difference between those two 90lb plates and you turning those tuners. So when everyone else including manufacturers say you don't have to loosen the strings before a truss rod adjustment, you don't. But imagine making that adjustment, which pushes directly against that force inside the neck with a 120lbs pulling against it, or same adjustment with zero pounds pulling against it. What seems better? Ever seen a Gibson Les Paul truss rod that gets mashed up into the neck and doesn't work any more? That's what can happen. So, you don't have to loosen the strings, but you're putting so much more stress into everything if you don't loosen your strings before truss rod adjustment. And you don't have to loosen all the way, just do 5 turns on each peg or something.

You use the measurement of .018 for the distance between the top of the fret and the bottom of the string at the first fret without holding the string down. Other luthiers say to use other measurements by holding the string down at the third fret. So I am kind of confused. Is the .018 measurement for acoustic guitars only? What should be the measurement for electric guitars?

This all relies on the angle of the neck attachment to the main base of the guitar. On some Washburn guitars your saddle nut may have to go down to 2 mm sticking up from the pocket. The angle in line with the bridge is the key to a good action guitar without too much shaving of the nuts.

I can't shave the metal base not the top for fear of killing the electronics or separating the "tabs" as I have to remove 1/8" - eliminating the connecting top part? Epiphone aj 185 electric acoustic

I'll have to try a set of the silk and steels just for kicks then. My favs got years have been the Ernie Ball Earthwoods, rock and blues. They come with a plain G string and it's easier for me to bend and a little rattlely. A thought on how low to go at the nut, and I have not done this yet but next time I'm setting something up I'll check it out. Capo the first fret and measure at the second fret. In theory the same number should work at the first fret to the nut, right? Think zero fret. Long time ago I think it was my first video, youtube killed the sound and I could only assume it was because of copy right stuff but years later I noticed the sound was back. Still don't know for sure what that was about.
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 8 жыл бұрын
I've used those Earthwoods strings and like them too. The music store guy gave me silk & steel .011-.047 and I plainly told him I wanted .013-.056! So I will be trying them later on a different guitar. Yes! It seems like that would work, plus you could probably get lower than what I set my nut action. They probably did kill it and as copyright laws and holders changed their policies maybe it became legal again and they re-activated it. There was some talk of them killing the audio on my flood video until I agreed to shar my earning from it with them, they were all for leaving it up with audio then lol the bastards! lol

Hi Randy... I had a question about 12th fret action vs. 1st fret (nut) action. Don't they affect each other? In other words: Let's assume we start by setting ideal neck relief with the truss rod. Then we continue by setting the 12th fret action to be optimal. Now, when we start filing the nut slots, isn't that going to lower the 12th fret action as well, so we'll need to go back and fix (raise) the 12th fret setting again, which will in turn raise the nut action as well, so we need to go back and lower THAT a touch again, etc......? (In my case, with an archtop, that involves raising/lowering the adjustable floating bridge.) Because of this, it seems to me that we need to keep tweaking nut slot height and bridge height, alternating back and forth in small increments, until the optimal balance is achieved?
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 6 жыл бұрын
set nut action last, no more material than needs to be removed won't change string action that much unless the nut action really has to come down a lot, to a degree you DO have to jump from nut action, neck relief and string action to be sure everything is where you want it but once you start getting close is lesser an issue.

@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 6 жыл бұрын
you want to be able to push the gaude under the string without it lifting the string, you don't want to lift the string any, you can feel when the gauge is right when you feel it between the fretboard and string just being touched without forcing the string up to do it.

Hey Randy - I'm new to all this - 'cos my dear (3rd) wifie bought me this guitar fer Xmas..and of course I don' play - yet..lol..anyhows..as it's a 'Classical' I ain' got the truss rod adjustment..but my clearances at the 12th fret are 3/16 and 4/16 (high E and bass strings)..which looks to me like the 'angled' bridge making the difference.. so..this equates to 180 thou and 240 thou (I think -check my math)..so do you reckon I shud mebbe 'lower my bridge' a little to get closer to your recommended clearances..and.. wud that make my 'learning' and possibly chord-changing quicker?...look forward to any answers or recommendations..oh.. and subscribed.. so checkin' out yer other vids.. thks..

@RandySchartiger 7 жыл бұрын
Wow that is some super high action! If its that bad I probably would recommend a neck reset on the guitar, it sounds like the neck angle is waay off! I don't think you could remove enough material from the bridge and saddle to correct it. You could probably get the action down a good bit but I don't think it will come down enough to make it easy to play. Definitely would make your chord changing faster with lower action.

Is that true? I would like to see a rev on those strings. Thank you for the videos. Stay cool my friend. Two Thumbs up for this video. Thank you.

Yes auto mechanics use them for a lot of things. You can get them at about any auto parts store, I think Walmart even carries them now and probably hardware stores may carry them. They are called Feelers Gauge. Thanks for watching mate, a review on tools, hmm that's a great idea!

Hi from the U.K. Randy , and thanks again for all the good advice you give . One silly question, if you follow the fretboard radius at the nut , then why not do the same thing at the 12th fret ? Cheers , Nige .
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 8 жыл бұрын
You should follow it at the saddle, you'll lose it a little bit by having the unwound strings a little closer action at 12th fret than the wound strings, it just depends on the individual players needs.

I never slacken off the strings when i tighten the truss rod electric. So how does the nut action become too high? .
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 8 жыл бұрын
You have been lucky! The nut action can get higher sometimes when the truss has slacked over time and needs tightened, or even enough fret ware can make it feel like the action raised. Or just a change in what the individual player likes changes over time.

I'm not 100% sure, I've never seen them in 12 string sets. For a Yamaha if it's a full size dreadnought guitar myself I like .013-.056 but that's pretty heavy, you might want to drop down to a .012-.054 Hold on! :) :)

It's set up to drain water really well, it's a good thing too because with all the heavy raining and flooding she only had about 2 inches of water in the basement and it drained out as quick as it stopped raining. The collapsed wall didn't get any worse. Landlord has started repairs but it's going to be a major job getting that mud out on that side and building that wall back. I've got a short video of it right after it collapsed I may post here soon. Hold on! =D

Randy, have you ever lowered the nut on each string below specs, and then lowered the frets that buzzed to have a really low action neck? I have an acoustic that seems really high and the nut height is right on, but I have to squeeze the first fret like Hercules chokinga snake.
@billsutherland2128
@billsutherland2128 6 жыл бұрын
Randy, I'm still a little confused because you're trusting that the first fret is at the correct height in relation to the fretboard. My problem is right at the nut where the strings feel like they're way too high to depress them between the nut and the first fret. My fingers have permanent channels in them and I've been playing for 51 years so I have pretty thick callouses. Do I check the first fret height and then check the distance between the top of the first fret and the bottom of each string? Can I drop the nut height and then drop the fret heights? Please save me from my ignorance!

hi sir, just wanna ask for advise, i just bought a cheap guitar and i am searching for ways to lower the height of the strings to the fret boards, because i'd have to press really hard especially on the 1st to 3rd strings on lower frets to make them ring, problem is my guitar doesnt have truss adjustment, and the saddle bridge is glued... the only thing i see could adjust is the nut. What will happen if I only adjust the nut? I dont have those measuring instruments, is there any other things you can suggest i use for measuring the height? :-) thank you. hoping for your response :-)
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 7 жыл бұрын
You should be able to put one US Quarter (25 cent piece) under your strings at the 12th fret without lifting the strings, the quarter should fit, if you can get 2 quarters under them then the action is too high. You may be able to get your saddle out by heating it with a heat lamp or blow dryer to loosen the glue, then sand material off the bottom of the saddle to lower your action. You can also knock the nut out and sand off the bottom of it to lower first fret action. a .5 mm guitar pick works well for measuring this. I have videos up that go more in depth on this. I hope this helps.

loosen the strings. why? because you always loosen the strings...... that's not very convincing, randy. i adjust the trussrod without loose strings and it always worked fine. thast's wrong?
@RandySchartiger
@RandySchartiger 8 жыл бұрын
Usually it will be ok, but that one time a ceased truss rod that already is pulling it's peak, you will be cutting off the fretboard and replacing the truss and it's something I try to avoid at all times if I can, a simple loosening of strings and I haven't broke one since. If you tighten enough truss' under string tension you'll eventually break one.
