Something I found amazing with Lemmo's playing during here comes the sun was that the song is normally played with a capo, but he barred it and played the melody with his 3rd and 4th fingers. Such skill.

Beautifully played Michael but George Harrison to my knowledge never had a black Country Gent, I played with the Beatles at Wembley Stadium NME awards in 1964 the guitar he played there was a walnut type brown! keep up the good work really enjoy your playing!

While George's CG looked black in the old films, it was actually a dark walnut finish. I thought it was black too when I first saw it.

Correct. George had two - one got destroyed on a motorway when the case fell off the car roof rack - both were walnut finishes. Dhani Harrison still has the second one.

Beautiful Gretch. If my 1966 Guild Starfire V ever went away, one of these would do. Nice to hear the Beatles tunes carry on... It was certainly good times back in the day as each new album or single was released... the anticipation, and reward, ... if we did not have the Nam war hanging over our heads, the 60s would have been perfect.

Look it up on Ed Romans Guitars. He does a thorough rundown on Harrison's guitars. He did own two Country Gentleman's that he bought in 1963. I'm pretty sure Gretsch did not offer black during that year. The color offered that came close to black was a dark amber. Not black. Roman says the original Gretsch played by Harrison was walnut. If I am wrong, please correct me.
@stevecoggs52564 жыл бұрын

Harrison actually had two of these guitars. They were both the standard dark walnut finish. They were not black! The first one had the dial up mutes and the second one had the flip up mutes. The dial up mutes were on the first few ‘62 Gents. They went to the single flip up mute in ‘67 after the Baldwin buyout. Also both had the Grover Imperial “kidney bean” tuners. In 1965 Gretsch changed the neck pickup to a Supertron and went to the “butter bean” tuners. This was at Chet’s insistence. Bound f-holes were not standard on any Country Gent nor was black finish. This was a custom order instrument.

I assume you've researched this well so I'm inclined to take your word for it but from all I've read I believe Gretsch only produced a Country Gent with a SuperTron pickup in the neck position in 1964. By 1966 they were using FilterTrons in both the neck as well as the bridge positions. I had a '64 and it had a SuperTron.

Great vid, but yep, George's guitar was dark red/walnut. The black is even rarer, I think, though! Shame the binding on these old Gretsches really didn't hold up, I've seen the problem a lot.

It was rumored that George's second 6122 was painted black or that the Walnut stain was super dark and looked black, but the first one was Walnut.
@briantaylor2.0233 жыл бұрын
George Harrison's Country Gentleman wasn't actually black, but it merely appeared that way because of the non-color, black and white filming from back then. His Country Gentleman was actually more of a brownish red/walnut color.
