Gosh, I had that exact model even to the finish. Gorgeous instrument until somebody walked away with it... I hadn't thought about that guitar in years, so cool to see a 347 like the one I had. Great video! Mark was certainly in a '79 mood for this one!

Happy birthday Richie Sambora!!! My first Rock concert was in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Twas at the Roberto Clemente's Coliseum. I was 13? Shit, I forget. A young band with guitarist Richie Sambora opened the show for Ratt. I immediately became a fan. I continued to see Bonjovi there after 4 more different tours in Miami, FL. Good times!!!

This guitar has a hell of sustain because of the stop-tail piece and the brass nut. Much more than a regular 335. I can dig it. Just don't know why this guitar wasn't very popular like the 335, 345 and 355. The production was discontinued in 1991. This one is a Kalamazoo, it's great. I was waiting for this video. Thanks Mark.

I bought one of those in Antique Sunburst new in 1981. I didn’t keep it long-it was very dark-sounding. I was running it through a Peavey Deuce VT amp that didn’t have a bright switch, and I sure could have used one! Even with the coil split it wasn’t bright enough. I traded it in on a Gibson Les Paul Heritage 80 Elite, and then the act I was playing with got a deal with Peavey, so I had to use a T-60 guitar. They got me a sunburst one, which sounded great through the Deuce VT amp I already had. Those T-60s are vastly underrated-but the ES-347 was prettier!

I can't help but think about Black Francis from the Pixies when it comes to the ES-347. His was sunburst and, oddly, didn't have the coil split/tap (whatever) on the lower bout. He used it during the "Trompe Le Monde" era back in 1991 alongside a gorgeous ES-295 reissue.

Nice!!! I ordered an Airbonre Again poster from Gibson when the '58 style Flying V was RI'd in '82 and they sent me a bunch of stuff, among which was a poster advertising the TP-6 with Larry Carlton circa '79 like this 347. Pretty rad but i'd be happy with a cherry red 335, small block stop tail piece like GoodBye Cream era EC. sb AS73 i have is cool, though. I should play it.

That's not coil tap, that's coil split. Coil tapping is when don't use all of the wounds of the coil, you have a lower output. Coil tap is usually to be found on single coils. BTW on the humbucker of my HSS-ST I not only have coil split, I have a switch for coil select! That's right, I can use the full humbucker or I can choose between both coils individually!

The method for tightening or loosening the string on a head tuner compared to a tailpiece tuner are completely different. The ratio described on head tuners is generally a turn-to-turn ratio. Different tuners with the same “ratio” can have very different degrees of accuracy (how fine), depending on things like the circumference of the post. SO - to properly compare the ratio of the head tuner to a tailpiece fine tuner you need to know what length of string is being changed per turn. Let’s say turns-per-inch. EXAMPLE: If the circumference of the headstock tuner post = 1/2 inch, You would need to count how many 360 degree full turns of the knob it will take to get that 1/2 inch of string wrapped around the post, then multiply by 2. If it takes 16 full turns to rotate the post a full 360 degrees, the turn-per-inch ratio is 32 to 1. If the post is thicker or thinner that ratio will be different. On the Tailpiece, let’s say the length can get changed 1/8 of an inch. You would need to count how many 360 degree full turns of the knob it will take to get that 1/8 inch, than multiply by 8. If it takes 6 full turns to get that 1/8 inch, the turn-per inch ratio is 48, which in this example is not much “finer” than the headstock. Bridge fine tuners make a lot more sense on orchestra instruments that have a 1:1 turn-to-turn ratio. BUT - we have not taken into account the LEVERAGE which is dictated by the size of the turning knob or the length of bar being pressed on by the tailpiece adjusting screw (among other things). Doesn’t math SUCK!?
