Today I wanted to compare a few bone, wooden, stone, nylon, acrylic, metal, and just plain old plastic picks back to back. Keep in mind that in addition to the material, the shape of the tip plays a big role in defining the sound as well. Hopefully you’ll be able to hear the differences! If you want to skip my awkward blabber and just hear for yourself, fast forward your marker to 5:05.
As always, feel free to leave any comments on what you’d like to hear next!

Nice playing dude. I think I liked the sound of the Jazz 3 the best.

I’ve been using the Dunlop Jazz III for many years, and I suppose I will continue with it. I may try out the wood and Stohn picks, for kicks. Really useful comparison, Alex. Thank You! 🙏🏽

I love them too. I try to save them for recording only, just so I don't lose them. They're a bit expensive!

I expected the stone picks to sound brighter than their actually did.

The quarter is actually my favorite, although it must be more difficult to play, I assume.

I used the Dunlop 205 mostly and even with it being a cheaper pick the sound really resonate with clarity.

After listening to your presentation twice; each with phones. I firstly commend you on the clean, accurate picking. The example that made me look up (I listened with eyes closed) each time was the Alice (stainless) pick. Specifically, it was the defined, low note density of the wound strings in contrast to the plain. I use original Adamas 2mm graphite picks. My supply is dwindling over these last decades, and the Dunlop versions are not the same at all. Also, I fan pick, so to me, the tip shape is a non sequitur. My nephew abandoned his usual pick preference in favor of Gravity's Gold Series, Sunrise, Big-Mini, in 1.5mm. The attack is so percussive, and articulate, it has expanded his rhythm playing prowess. I was considering giving the Gold Series a try, but they offer a 2.5mm instead of a 2mm.

Hi Alex - Reason I asked what picks you use in your other post is because I use a Blue Chip TAD 50 and sounds really great and is wide (sort of like wearing clown shoes) but only reason I use it is because of the reviews it got but quite frankly I find them a bit expensive and I go back and forth with that, the John Petrucci flow, the Andy James Flow, big stubby and little stubby Jazz III which I love but really small. I will definitely order a Dunlop 205. LoL! It so difficult at times to find one.... Thanks for the post!

JazzGuitarNeophyte I’d love to try a Blue pick sometime but they’re just so expensive. I’ve actually tried the John Petrucci pick recently and I like it too. I ended up getting a pack of them since I was low on the 205s and the Sam Ash I was at didn’t have any. I think they might take some time getting used to, but let me know how you like them!

@@AlexPriceMusician If you have a chance to try the Blue Chip TAD 50 do it but if you decide to stay with the Petrucci I don't blame you as pending the Dunlop 205 that I just ordered, the Petrucci one is the one I keep coming back to. Alot of folks say it sounds dead since it isn't pointed but to me it sounds jazzy and cuts like butter. The TAD50 sounds great and is lighter and like I said huge in size. I would demo for you but I suck at playing however, check out this cat who plays as good as you do. Both links below has him testing the Blue Chip TAD 50. Just a shout out to you Alex! Thanks for this! I started using the Dunlop Jazz 205s last week and there is no turning back! It cuts like butter and reminds me of my Petrucci Signature one but in a small package and quite frankly more tone than the Petrucci! Love the 205s! Thanks man!

Wow! That’s so kind of you!! I’m glad you like the 205s. I’ve used them for all kinds of music in the last 5-6 years and it’ll be interesting to see how the Blue Chip sounds! Thanks so much. I’ll check out my Facebook messages! Best, Alex
