That tone is like honey to ears. Love that brit gain with a strat. The notes are fantastically pronounced thanks to the single coils and when playing fast it is just amazing. At the end of a solo just hitting a chord with that set takes you to another dimension...

I've been using some stone picks that my sister in law gave me for about 2 years now. I love how clean the attack is, and how well they grip, as long as you keep the polish up,. However they do have a harsh pick clack when layer acoustically, especially on my mandolins, which I guess is an acquired taste. It could be enough to count them out. Also different stone has different tone. I am now visit lots of local rock and mineral show and picking up various types.

Great stuff and great sounds. Thanks for that Hendrix vid you did recently, though I'm still working my way through finding the major blues shapes local to major chords. I'm so familiar with blues, aeolian and pentatonic, but haven't explored major blues at all. Once I nail that, I'll be really comfortable with adding those voicings, so thanks again.

Hi Rob! I was excited to see this video as someone who's just about exclusively used stone picks for a over a decade. I believe the simple fact is that the extremely hard stone doesn't absorb as much motion of the string as any softer material would. This results in a fuller tone, mostly in the high end, and yes, more pick noise and some undesirable 'squeaking'. It will depend on your individual technique (slower or faster picking strokes, pick angle, etc.), but for this reason I personally choose to still use a plastic pick just for cleaner toned songs with arpeggiated chords or gentle strumming. But this same effect of not absorbing vibration gives the pick the most 'positive' feel in hand - like what you do is transferred to the strings 100% - and I think this is why I love them. It's amazing to me that these picks do not wear out. We're talking a very slight dulling of the finish only on the actual picking edges on the stone pick I've used exclusively for about 6 years (being handmade, mine all have slightly different shapes and one is my favourite). I've also dropped them and can't remember any breaking, but mine are all in the 2.5 - 3 mm range. Of course, I'm careful not to :-) The real danger is losing them... What they do wear out, as I reckon you've discovered by now, is the string windings. You may notice little flakes around your pickups for a few days if your strings have nickel-plated steel windings, but I think that they don't really remove much material; the end result is that they actually deform and flatten the wire of the windings on the D and partially on the A. What's incredible is that this doesn't seem to influence tone, and certainly has no effect on the strings' lifespan. I wonder if these picks would flake anything off of pure stainless steel strings... I haven't tried them. The brand of stone picks you show looks very nice. All of mine were handmade by Donald Laufer from Headwaters Lapidary in Pennsylvania. This is the Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/HeadwatersLapidary?ref=l2-shopheader-name&section_id=16450077 So thanks for this video, from one stone pick enthusiast to another!

It's interesting the experimentation of different material for picks. I got a couple of titanium picks from a project in Kickstarter a couple of years ago, just out of curiosity. I learned to enjoy them after a few days playing, particularly because they are obviously very hard and I used to use medium. I found that the cuts in its body helped a lot with the grip and keep them in place for long periods of time playing (I do sweat a lot and I need to reposition the plastic picks often). They don't wear out (at least haven't so far)

Nice! A student of mine recently gave me a stone pick made by a local jeweller and it’s the best pick I’ve ever owned! Such a robust sound. Good to know there are other companies out there making these. Not really great for funk type aggressive strumming I find, but unbeatable for lines

Love my Stoneworks 1.5mm and 2.0mm. I've found they have a really nice compression characteristic on the attack of the note. Everything sounds so much more even when I play with them, no emphasis in any particular area of the frequency spectrum.

I have a small collection of Stoneworks Guitar Picks. I like collecting unique picks (I also have different woods and metals as well). Typically, I prefer jazz size picks on the electric. I wasn't sure if I would be able to hold onto them but I was wrong. Like he says, the grip is very noticed. Right out of the package I noticed a bolder attack and almost a fluid movement over the strings. I also noticed that each pick has it's own sound. I think Mike Stone did a great job with stone picks and hey, they look amazing and play nicely. They certainly add different tones without changing knob settings or pickups.

I've been using a stone (gem is agate) pick for about 5 years now and absolutely love it. Has a slight bit more bite when picking flat, and the wear on it is minimal. I did get a few little nicks that were hooking onto the strings at times, just got a bit of wet/dry sandpaper and a bit of water and buffed the nicks out of it so it was back to smooth. Cost me $40 AUD and haven't looked back.

I tried large agate teardrop picks on bass several times in the '80's after watching a guitarist I admired using one. It was good for speed, but with bass strings being so heavy every note had an audible "clack" that carried through the speaker. I worked for a while to minimize it, but it never worked that well. I switched to finger style soon after and never went back to them. If I ever learn to play guitar, I'll probably give them a try again.

I really feel the main factor in the sound and feel of a pick is the shape, granted, metal picks have a certain sound, but I think you can really tell when a pick has a round point or a "sharpened" or very close angle point. I've played around with different shapes, thicknesses and materials (never stone, though) and, besides metal picks (with their very bright, very fast attack and, sometimes, scratchy tone), the big difference in sound is from the shape of the attacking point, the other variables change the way you play and can be changed that way too; yes, yes, that changes the sound, but still, that can be adjusted, the shape of the pick can not (a "on-the-fly" change, I mean). Great video, great videos Cheers!!

I've got two old Min'D picks made by John Dougherty in the late 70's. They were the first stone picks and were made of agate. They've both been dropped several times I'm sure, but never on concrete. Bought a stonework plain Jane. 2.1mm recently. Less than 10 of our Great British pounds, which is cheaper than some of the featured signature plastic picks. They are great. Grip well, don't wear and as Rob said, slide over the strings really nicely. I think they sound 'smoother' than plastic picks. The best thing is that they are a natural product and each one is unique. It will be yours, no one else will have one like it. Name it like the precious thing it is :)

Quarts or Agate is fantastic. I started using stone picks 30 years ago when a salesman at a music store told me I should try one and I became hooked. I used to say, "If your gonna play Rock, ya need to play with a rock." Most people just couldn't understand the rock pick idea. I have many along with metal and non petrified bone. I guess my favorite will always be the lightning fast stone picks. Rock on.😂🤣😂😎
