How to install pickups in your guitar even if you can't solder!
If you can use a screwdriver you can install guitar pickups yourself!
One mistake that I made was in trimming the "pushback" wire Duh. No need to even do that. You literally need two screw drivers. One Phillips to remove and reinstall the pick guard and the pickups from the guitar and another small flat head to push the button down while installing or removing wire from the PCB circuit.
Step 1 Remove old strings - I saved mine to reuse as they are still in good shape
Step 2 - Remove the pick guard screws
Step 3 - Check to see if the pick guard will come out of the guitar, if not it could be that the neck is holding the pick guard in place. If so, back the neck screws off enough to allow you to remove the pick guard. Be sure to be careful if your ground wire or output jack leads are short not to break them.
Step 4 - Using a small flat head screw driver remove the leads from the Obsidian Wiring harness
Step 5 - Remove the pickups from the pick guard using a phillips screw driver
Step 6 - Install the new pickups into the pick guard and insert the hot and ground leads according to the instructions. Hot is white black is ground
Step 7 - Plug a patch cable into the input check and plug the guitar into an amp. Use a low volume and clean channel. Touch the pickup magnets in relation to the pickup selector switch and you should hear a noise through the amp. It's good to do this to make sure you have not made a mistake.
Step 8 - If step 7 checks out reinstall the pick guard
Step 9 - Tighten the neck screws back up
Step 10 - Restring the guitar
Step 11 - Set the pickup height
It's that simple!

Hello Lucas!!! New sub here! Thank you. I've been looking at this. The solderless. I am wanting to try some Alnico pups and since I like my ceramics I want to be able to pull the new ones if I don't like them without ruining pots over heating. Hahaha. Great video here.

Hi Acrobata. Thank you. At the moment I’ve only tried the obsidian kits so I don’t have any experience with the other type. My strat seems pretty quiet though. I’m hoping to try something from 920 D or StewMac at some point but just haven’t had the chance. Of course proper shielding and a good ground are really important. Cheers Hey I forgot to mention, I got to spend almost 4 weeks in Portugal back in the early 2000’s. Mostly in the Algarve. Such an incredible place. I hope to go back someday.

I have a Japanese 1986 Strat that I want to change the single coils on. I have a feeling that this won't work. Can I cut each wire and securely join one pick up at a time using some sort of connector rather than to solder? Like the connectors you crimp to secure?

Japanese strats are generally considered to be excellent guitars. Why do you want to change the pickups?

@@LucasCrossleyGuitar Because I hate the hum. I have done some study and hear people who don't want to solder can use some sort of heat wrap that shrinks onto the wire. Yes I love my MIJ strat but I love the sound of my 99 American deluxe fat hss ash body strat that cam with 2 noiseless fender pick ups and humbuckers . It's VERY quiet compared to the MIJ Strat. Screw that 60 cycle hum and having to keep my hand on the strings while their not being played. I am also installed a Roland synth on my MIJ model. When I play a midi symphony sound with the guitar sound at the same time. I really don't want all of that hum

@@LucasCrossleyGuitar I want to replace them with fender noiseless 4th gen , but also read that they might not fit in some standard strats because they are too deep....I don't want to buy these things just to have to have a luthier have to make the wholes deeper

@@abaniko9 I get what you're saying. Personally I have no experience using a synth with a guitar. I'm not that modern lol :)I could see how the hum would be a big problem in that scenario. I have played the Fender Ultra (has the 4th gen Noiseless Pups) I didn't spend a lot of time with it though. I tried 4 or 5 just could not bond with it. I also can't understand why a guitar in that price range doesn't have stainless steel frets lol. Regarding the specifics about the depth of the body and pickups you should ask around. I don't know the whether or not the pickups would fit that body. The type of wiring harness I used in this video would solve your problem but should let you change out pickups easily and often if you need to try some different things. You could keep the original electronics more or less in tact which might be nice for your MIJ strat. It is a vintage guitar after all. I am not endorsed by Obsidian and I don't get anything for promoting their product. I just thought it was good for what I wanted to do. Anyhow hope you get it sorted out the way you want. Cheers!

Hi Jason. Can you tell me the time stamp in the video so I can check for you? It could be the ground wire but I could check for you.

@@LucasCrossleyGuitar I think that was the point 😂 just my guess

Do guitar manufactures choose not to use solderless systems because it would be too easy for consumers to change their own pickups? I imagine music stores and luthiers would lose a lot of income

Also i’d imagine they cut cost whenever they can, even companies like gibson.

I don’t think so. There are a great many who want their guitars to be made in the same way as they were in the 50’s and 60’s. Those customers would likely hate to have systems like these installed in their guitars. They believe that the tone is in part from the type of wire, capacitors and potentiometers that were used back then. If you want that sound then you need that recipe for the tone.

Gibson uses pcb boards in a lot of their modern guitars but the board isn’t designed to let you install new wiring. I installed an obsidian wiring kit in my Les Paul. Their traditional models won’t use pcb boards.
