Thank you. I knew the scale had major and minor chords attached to it, but didn't know the minor chords were different modes. I never sat down and tried to figure out why "a minor" was the relative minor of "C" and not the other minor keys in the scale

I’ve been playing forever and never put it together like that before. I use that D shape for playing a G and A a lot but I’m sitting here and just slapped myself on the head because it was so obvious and I couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Thanks for a great, simple, easy to understand video!

Looking from a piano perspective, these are all second inversion triads. You can also do root and first inversion (using E and A shapes) to fill out the possiblities 😉

I've been playing for more than 50 years, and I never had any lessons. I somehow figured out the order. MmmMMm○ by myself just by sound. From there, I only need to know what the root note is, and just move everything up or down accordingly. I just (ignore) sharps and flats because it just confuses me to remember where they are in whatever mode they're in. I'm pretty good at it, but don't ask me what I'm doing musically because I can only describe it my own way. For me, if it sounds right, it is right. Although there are many good reasons to have lessons, sometimes I believe they are "overthinking." At one time, someone told me that maybe I could do some rather neat things because nobody told me I couldn't. Good lesson !!

I don't think you should close the door on any approach. If one of them feels like its confounding you - leave it. I'm a guy who prefers to know why - but I have mellowed in old age and I realise that you often don't need to. I have found things that please my ear. None quite so much as those I stand a chance of doing myself. I've had to accept that there are some things I'll never do. "Aptitude" is the word I like. Some say "facility." So if you can tap your fingers really fast then it might be an advantage. I can't so I fall back to what I call "beauty." Speed isn't everything unless you can do it. Then it is! Ask yourself what does melodic mean? What rhythms excite you most? There are a lot of avenues to pursue. One of them might be just what you CAN do. Another thing to learn and then forget is just why are the scales we use so awkward. I can tell you there is compromise everywhere. Once I'm done with this subject you'll never feel the same about tuning. EXCEPT to be the same as everyone else is an advantage to an orchestra! Hint! It has to do with the total number of pitches to accommodate (KEYS on the piano) different instruments, and the business of being able to switch registers in order to suit the singers. If you don't introduce some boring maths, it gets very difficult. I'm just going to start you off. Fractional divisions (as in thirds, fifths, etc) or frequency difference? What'll it be maestro? What will be your chosen separation between the scale notes? I refuse to help you further. It's now down to you. He talked a good game but still could not play Yet that is what matters come end of the day Does he have long fingers, can he ever reach Or will he quit now and just have to teach?

Nice tutorial . Over years this is just something I could not grasp this concept . So let's revisit the 1 through 7 items instead of the D scale you referred too , lets start at key of C major mode. Thus can the modes with the Greek named modes - C ( Ionian ) D( Dorian) E( Phrygian) F ( Lydian ) G ( Mixolydian) A ( Aolian ) B ( Locrian) , do these same Greek names on application go by the same principal of that D scale in as in the order of this presentation ?

Basically yes to your question. But this is a weird incomplete video anyway. He shows how in only ONE major scale aka Ionian each of the chords in order go major-minor-minor-major etc, but failed to mention the other important part - the "interval" or spaces between the notes. Modes identify the intervals or spacings of a scale based on which starting point of the intervals of a major scale you start from. You gotta know the major minor bit going up and down a scale but it only works in THIS ONE major scale but knowing the note spacing aka intervals of each scale is where it's at. 👀
