I 've played for years without knowing this. I stumbled on some of it by accident, bit never got the tru connection of the scales coming from the chords, being able to use ALL the notes if the Chord, making things interesting by targeting 5th's 7th's etc and chords outside the scale but are in the chords. A true lightbulb moment Rusty. Thanks so much.

Excellent approach, Rusty! You always have great insight! I love how you started: "Let me tell you a story about G minor....". Then your proceeded to do just that! You REALLY got the point across and drove it home. I also like how you pointed out that there's a pentatonic box associated with every chord/triad shape. That puts it all together. Nice licks, by the way! You told a great story about that chord progression! Personally, I think it's important to know how to find your roots & octaves... Which you showed. Keep up the awesome stuff! 👌 👍 🤪

Rusty, when improvising - do you connect pre-created riffs and licks, like building a jigsaw puzzle with pieces that fit together? Or are you literally picking random notes from the scale, then resolving to the root note? I find that if I go blind into a scale, without knowing what notes I'm going to play until it happens - it sounds very unmusical. I feel that I need a large bank of licks that i can apply to any key/scale, that i can piece together to make a unique solo. This is actually an area that is seldom discussed on tuition videos. When you watch guitarists improvise an incredible solo, it comes across like they've just composed it on the spot - like a moment of pure genius. Yet I'm sure (in most cases) they are using phrases that they have already learnt and practiced. Maybe it's a trade secret? 😂
@rustysguitar15 ай бұрын
Hey Ben, the first thing I look for when I improvise is a common scale that will work over all of the chords. Then I’m looking for the triad chord shapes within that scale. So that’s the structure or you could say the available notes that work. I like to listen to Angus Young, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton and Jimmy page. Those Influences and licks come out in my playing. So yes, knowing different licks that work in different situations is important. And knowing how to use them within the structure of a scale. I try to break down elements of this type of improvising in my videos. See you soon and thanks for all your support to my channel.👍

Real good content, this is excellent instruction as always Rusty, a good point when you said just start with a little phrase with the chord and gradually build from there over a period of time, that’s what l have to get better at, seeing what licks l came play with whatever chord(s) I’m playing, again real good content, information, and so glad you demonstrate as your talking, l know each guitar teacher is different on the videos that are put out on playing the guitar, but for me when there’s a long explanation and very little instruction they lose me, Thanks again on your great tutorials.

I recently picked up on the "secret" of rock-n-roll. I kept wondering why the books all teach things like I-IV-V, while the REAL rock stars were playing songs with chord progressions the books never even covered. Then I finally figured out that they're just playing chords that are already under their fingers, regardless of what the book tells them. And it sounds fantastic. Your G-minor work had me walking down a lonely desert highway in the middle of the night listening to ghosts in the wind. MY G-minor sounds like somebody reading from a book and noodling up and down a scale. But not for long. Thanks, Rusty's Guitar! 🎸🤘 PS: I'm not sure who this dude is, because the real Rusty's like 20 years older than this fella. How deep does this conspiracy GO?!

I drop Videos on my Channel. You can look and See the things I have covered and even written myself and honestly Im at a loss cuz some of what I wrote... I Dont Know Where it came from or Yknow or Out of me. Rave Moments Where things Just Came together. I realize We Make it up as We go and there are Some Rules. I just wish I had a map, cuz I'm truly lost. and the good and the Bad and the Ugly of it all is I can practice all day long. and I typically do and I don't want to waste my time because I know I am just playing the stuff that I played a thousand times before you know. I'm trying to Advanced as fast as possible and I don't know how to do that. I know I obviously have some skill going into what I'm doing, put also I don't know what I'm doing. you know I don't know that I think I'm having a hard time following what what you're saying I mean I get what you're saying but converting it over to myself and the guitars not really happenn I know a whole bunch of First Position chords I need to know what to do beyond that you know where do I go from that. this is not an easy thing but I'm willing to put the work in. you can direct me somehow that would be awesome I mean your videos are great but you know I honestly I don't walk away with a whole lot from them because I just don't feel like I can relate to what you're saying. I've never had a teacher or I went to do one lesson and I was at and I never went back. I want to get as good as I can as fast as I can. all you see on KZbin that I do is 2 years

Thanks for checking out my videos. Most of my videos are for intermediate players. For players that already have a working knowledge of chords and scales together. Learning and memorizing the fretboard is a huge thing. Learn scales that connect to the chords that you are playing. Most of all watch and learn from the guitar players that you like to listen to. Then you will start to make the Guitar say something. Make it your own style. Hope to see you soon.👍

Insanely awesome tone...always killer tone do you play through an amplifier computer program? I'm almost 60 still looking something in tone what kind of delay are you using? Awesome video as always 2thumbs up sir.

I use a few different real tube amps. And I also use the Strymon timeline delay. If you’re going to play with a band, you would need a small amp, but if you’re just playing guitar for enjoyment at home, I would use an amp modeler. Just research some things on KZbin. Thanks so much for checking out my videos. See you soon.👍

Rusty you are a star, fellow 61 year old here....fingers a bit slow but the heart is willing. Did you learn a load of licks then use them to improvise if so where di you learn them from? Can play the notes but it isn't very musical....thanks again you are a star.

Early on I learned licks. But it wasn’t until I learned how those licks were created, I started moving forward. Using the structure of the pentatonic scale, and then letting the influences of my guitar heroes come out in my playing. Learning the fretboard and how the licks work with each chord is the ticket. Keep working at it and keep rockin my friend. 🤛

If you are just average then I know I really suck. Honestly how long have you been playing?
@rustysguitar14 ай бұрын
On KZbin, I’m surrounded by some of the best players in the world. So I definitely feel average! I have been playing almost 50 years. Let’s keep working on this stuff together Tom. Talk to you soon. 👍

Well that’s what I was told at open mic. I suffer from severe stage fright and wanted to get over it. Memory problems. I can’t hardly remember a song so all I do is mostly improvise but the people don’t want to hear that . They want songs and words. He said people don’t want to hear you “warm” up . I never went back and it killed any confidence that came and now I’m even more nervous in front of people. I can’t even think , relax , or hardly hold my guitar. I don’t wanna use drugs and alcohol to overcome this but it can’t be helped especially assholes at open mic. Too many years of playing to never have a band or know what it’s like. 5 years ago I said if I don’t have a band I’m gonna burn my guitars. Well it’s been 7 years. Still got my guitars. No band . Shakey hands and can’t remember the songs I do know.
