I'm just a lady who has had and played a lot of stringed instruments over the years. I'm the daughter of the guitarist from Bliss (AZ 1965-69 Psychedelic Trio) so I've always found these types of tones sound very soothing; especially when I'm missing my daddy. This year my Spotify most played by far was Alunah's entire album White Hoarhound. So time to learn the latest on producing these tones. Dad said he would've needed 20k watts back in the day to make a sound like that. Please no. $$$$$!!! Def leaning toward an SG for this (which I don't own anymore) so somebody's shhhhoppin. I'll be on this channel a lot while I obsess about the perfect gear before I buy. Got that from Dad, too.

Solid info, every guitarist should be able to do this every time you change your strings. It’s also a good idea to check your neck relief again 24 hours after adjusting your truss rod. Necks will sometimes need a little time to adjust to it’s new truss rod setting. I’ve seen another method for widening nut slots, where you take some fine sandpaper, wrap it around your new string gauge and gently use it to widen the nut slot. You have to keep checking to be sure that you don’t go too deep or you’ll have to replace the nut.
@FuzzlordEffects
@FuzzlordEffects 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Jim and great point about re checking after 24 hours. The sandpaper over string trick also pro! Pinned comment so folks would see your great info. Cheers and for watching! Jason
@Wolf_K
@Wolf_K 5 жыл бұрын
With the sandpaper around a string Nut trick it’s best to measure the thickness of the paper, times it by Pi, then use a string a little thinner than what you’re aiming for as if you want the nut to accept a 60 but file it with a 60 plus sandpaper (x Pi) the result will be over 60. Or, just measure the thickness of the makeshift file before using it. Also keep in mind at all times that we need to go wider, not deeper. Otherwise great info! ;)
@escalator9734
@escalator9734 5 жыл бұрын
@@Wolf_K Easier method would be to wrap the paper around the replaced string. A .046 with paper around will make a wide enough slot for a 60 in most cases. No need to calculate

We usually just use a bit of guitar string... no paper or files, nothing fancy needed... just a careful hand/eye. Also, lube your nut! An spare graphite pencil will do the trick if your in a pinch.... pun intended ;)

The ultimate proper way to do the intonation is to do it in the playing position (standing up/ down, neck more parallel to the ground or pointing to the sky) and fret the 12th fret the way you would when playing. When you put a guitar on a table on it's back, with or without support on the neck, or resting a lot on it's neck, and when you're playing what angle your neck is will change the pitch of the strings, the neck moves, gravity and all. This means doing the intonation in the non playing position will probably give a different result in the playing position. Same thing with the fretting, if you do it lightly when intonating vs fretting hard when playing, it will be off. It's a slight difference overall (yet definitely noticeable) , and it's great to do the intonation whatever way, but we might as well do it the best way Besides that great vid Jason, it's always a good thing to educate guitar players and spread the word setting up a guitar can be done at home fairly easily

Danelectro Stock '59 Reissue. Usually Drop C#. Jazz lights (12-52 Wound 3rd). Also a Firefly DC Style. Usually BEADGB. Heavy strings from 7-String Heavy Top Skinny Bottom (13-62). Love my guitars. I don't need anything fancy to do the job. I play with tons of different tunings, so I included my defaults. I absolutely love incorporating my 12 string as well, so I'll include it: Gretsch White Falcon 12 String Jumbo Acoustic. Eb Standard or Drop C#. Lights (10-47). Just ran across this channel out of the blue and looks forwards to binging the content while I work my dead-end job.

2004 Epiphone Les Paul Baritone with a 27.75" scale length in worn brown. B standard, A standard. 14-68 ga strings. I was 15, had saved up all my money the summer before and wanted a guitar, I knew I wanted a LP. Saw epiphone had just come out with a Baritone. I didn't know anything about guitar besides smells like teen spirit on my dad's squire. Baritone is tuned lower? *Count me in* I've played tons of guitars since I was 15 back then, hell even made a handful, and none of them were as heavy and crushing. It's by far the best purchase my teenage self made lol. Everybody slept on them or something because they stopped production and no one knows about them.

Good info here. I would add just a few things. 1. Those measurements are suggestions. You have to vary per guitar and player. If you have a light touch, you can often get away with a flatter neck and lower action. If you have a heavy touch, you'll probably want more relief and higher action. 2. Measure the action with the capo on the first fret (or just fret at the first fret while measuring). 3. Check the pickup height after setting the action, but before setting the intonation. Pickups have magnets that affect string vibration (and therefore intonation). If they're too close, you'll get a weird chorus-like effect. Too far, and your guitar will sound weak. Fret at the last fret, and measure from the top of the pole to the bottom of the string. For humbuckers, I shoot for 2/32 of an inch on the bass and treble side.

Personally for me I like Ernie Ball light top heavy bottom strings because it retains heaviness of the bottom strings for heavy riffage, while also being able to solo on the higher strings n not have them be hard to bend, just cause I’m a fan of bending strings. I play an SG with a Telecaster neck, which I assembled myself. Was a bit tricky, but in the end it stays in tune and the intonation is good, too. It has two Humbuckers with a little above 9k. I usually play it in C#-standard and I use Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms (.10-.52) so the strings are a tad less loose than with a set of regular 10s. I used the ends of the thicker strings (low E, A, D) to carefully take off a tiny bit of the nut so they fit perfectly. A file or sandpaper can also do the trick, but if you are not 100% sure what you are doing, better take it to the luthier.

Oddly enough, the first time I used heavier gauge strings, 12-60 I think, I had to file the nut. Worked out brilliantly.

I have 5 guitars all tuned for different tones ,schecter C-1 elite (Ernie ball 10-46) E flat, Reverend sensei railhammer chisel pickups ( Ernie ball 11-48) D standard, Electra les Paul custom gibson 500T/498R pickups (Ernie ball 10-52) C standard, Schecter daimen emg 81 pickups (Ernie ball 10-52) B standard, Westone dimension IV (Ernie ball 11-56) E,E,D,g,b,b. Werid tuning but with the drone strings it's really interesting with heavy fuzz or cleanish

In my experience intonating a guitar that is laying on its back will cause the guitar to play flat since the weight of the neck will pull slightly when tuning. You probably have more experience than I do, that’s just something I’ve noticed. I intonate my sg and thinner neck guitars while it’s sitting in my lap.

Good point! I will have to check intonation with tuner while in playing position and make sure. Thanks for the tip! Jason

No bad information here. I have a few things to add - when checking the action, fret the string at the first fret to take the nut out of the picture. You don't want any variance in the slots in the nut to affect the measurement. After making any adjustment (truss rod, action, intonation, etc...) tune the guitar to pitch before checking the measurement and adjusting again. Check the pickup height after you've checked the action and *before* you adjust the intonation. The magnetic pull from the pickup can affect sustain and intonation. Fret the last fret, and measure from the bottom of the string to the highest pole piece. I go for 2/32 inch on bass and treble sides for humbuckers, 3/32 inch on the bass and 2/32 inch on the treble for single coils, and 1/32 all around for active pickups. Check intonation in playing position. Things like gravity and pressure on the neck from a neck rest can noticeably affect intonation. I tend to go for .009 inch relief, and 2/32 inch action on the bass side and 3/64 inch action on the treble side. I then adjust as the guitar or player needs. I tend to play SGs - I have a 1983 "The SG" and 1991 SG-1. In E Standard I use 10-46, in D standard I use 11-48.

I use an Agile 727 with 60's tuned to A standard. I mostly play sludge, doom, and post-rock on it and the extra string adds a lot of lower range to mess around with and still leaves the same upper range of a 6 string tuned to D standard.

Chapman ML3 Pro For strings...I use 13, 17, 30, 42, 52, 62 Ernie Ball Cobalt tuned to C#/C Standard (I can play D Standard on them but they do feel a little tight). My local shop didn't have any Mammoth Slinky sets, so I improvised one from a 7 string set and just didn't use the smallest string of the set...I'm fixing to use this "hack" again for my E Standard guitar to make Drop D playing feel a little more balanced (the A and D strings feel too stiff for stacked and barre Drop chords). Using 7 string sets give all sorts of customization options.

'16 Gibson LP Studio faded. I keep it in C#. Skinny top heavy bottom strings. But I measure my 8 thou from 1st-16th/17th fret. Any straighter than that and I get buzz on the first fret and action to high at 12. I'm currently at 3.5-4/64" on Bass and 3/64" on treble.

Jackson 7 string, I use a custom set of .10-.64 for the low b string, tuned to f# standard. Basically standard 8 string tuning but without the top string. I rarely use the low F#, I focus more on the B tuning and kick in that low string when appropriate.

Gibson Sonex 180 . C# standard or drop B . I went heavier strings recently with a pack of 12 - 56, but didnt like 24 gauge 3rd string or the 56 gauge 6th string so swapped for a 17 and 52. I really like this string setup (12, 16, 17, 32, 44, 52) but it’s impractical because I can’t buy 1 set with those gauges and I’m not gonna buy 2 packs each time I wanna change strings. Thanks for the video, I need to do a good set up on my guitar and this is straightforward and perfect for what I need to do.
