I'm just a lady who has had and played a lot of stringed instruments over the years. I'm the daughter of the guitarist from Bliss (AZ 1965-69 Psychedelic Trio) so I've always found these types of tones sound very soothing; especially when I'm missing my daddy. This year my Spotify most played by far was Alunah's entire album White Hoarhound. So time to learn the latest on producing these tones. Dad said he would've needed 20k watts back in the day to make a sound like that. Please no. $$$$$!!! Def leaning toward an SG for this (which I don't own anymore) so somebody's shhhhoppin. I'll be on this channel a lot while I obsess about the perfect gear before I buy. Got that from Dad, too.

Solid info, every guitarist should be able to do this every time you change your strings. It’s also a good idea to check your neck relief again 24 hours after adjusting your truss rod. Necks will sometimes need a little time to adjust to it’s new truss rod setting. I’ve seen another method for widening nut slots, where you take some fine sandpaper, wrap it around your new string gauge and gently use it to widen the nut slot. You have to keep checking to be sure that you don’t go too deep or you’ll have to replace the nut.
@FuzzlordEffects5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Jim and great point about re checking after 24 hours. The sandpaper over string trick also pro! Pinned comment so folks would see your great info. Cheers and for watching! Jason
@Wolf_K5 жыл бұрын
With the sandpaper around a string Nut trick it’s best to measure the thickness of the paper, times it by Pi, then use a string a little thinner than what you’re aiming for as if you want the nut to accept a 60 but file it with a 60 plus sandpaper (x Pi) the result will be over 60. Or, just measure the thickness of the makeshift file before using it. Also keep in mind at all times that we need to go wider, not deeper. Otherwise great info! ;)
@escalator97345 жыл бұрын
@@Wolf_K Easier method would be to wrap the paper around the replaced string. A .046 with paper around will make a wide enough slot for a 60 in most cases. No need to calculate

The ultimate proper way to do the intonation is to do it in the playing position (standing up/ down, neck more parallel to the ground or pointing to the sky) and fret the 12th fret the way you would when playing. When you put a guitar on a table on it's back, with or without support on the neck, or resting a lot on it's neck, and when you're playing what angle your neck is will change the pitch of the strings, the neck moves, gravity and all. This means doing the intonation in the non playing position will probably give a different result in the playing position. Same thing with the fretting, if you do it lightly when intonating vs fretting hard when playing, it will be off. It's a slight difference overall (yet definitely noticeable) , and it's great to do the intonation whatever way, but we might as well do it the best way Besides that great vid Jason, it's always a good thing to educate guitar players and spread the word setting up a guitar can be done at home fairly easily

I didn't know anything about guitar besides smells like teen spirit on my dad's squire. Baritone is tuned lower? *Count me in* I've played tons of guitars since I was 15 back then, hell even made a handful, and none of them were as heavy and crushing. It's by far the best purchase my teenage self made lol. Everybody slept on them or something because they stopped production and no one knows about them.

Good info here. I would add just a few things. 1. Those measurements are suggestions. You have to vary per guitar and player. If you have a light touch, you can often get away with a flatter neck and lower action. If you have a heavy touch, you'll probably want more relief and higher action. 2. Measure the action with the capo on the first fret (or just fret at the first fret while measuring). 3. Check the pickup height after setting the action, but before setting the intonation. Pickups have magnets that affect string vibration (and therefore intonation). If they're too close, you'll get a weird chorus-like effect. Too far, and your guitar will sound weak. Fret at the last fret, and measure from the top of the pole to the bottom of the string. For humbuckers, I shoot for 2/32 of an inch on the bass and treble side.

I play an SG with a Telecaster neck, which I assembled myself. Was a bit tricky, but in the end it stays in tune and the intonation is good, too. It has two Humbuckers with a little above 9k. I usually play it in C#-standard and I use Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms (.10-.52) so the strings are a tad less loose than with a set of regular 10s. I used the ends of the thicker strings (low E, A, D) to carefully take off a tiny bit of the nut so they fit perfectly. A file or sandpaper can also do the trick, but if you are not 100% sure what you are doing, better take it to the luthier.

In my experience intonating a guitar that is laying on its back will cause the guitar to play flat since the weight of the neck will pull slightly when tuning. You probably have more experience than I do, that’s just something I’ve noticed. I intonate my sg and thinner neck guitars while it’s sitting in my lap.
@FuzzlordEffects5 жыл бұрын
Good point! I will have to check intonation with tuner while in playing position and make sure. Thanks for the tip! Jason
@paintitmatt5 жыл бұрын
No bad information here. I have a few things to add - when checking the action, fret the string at the first fret to take the nut out of the picture. You don't want any variance in the slots in the nut to affect the measurement. After making any adjustment (truss rod, action, intonation, etc...) tune the guitar to pitch before checking the measurement and adjusting again. Check the pickup height after you've checked the action and *before* you adjust the intonation. The magnetic pull from the pickup can affect sustain and intonation. Fret the last fret, and measure from the bottom of the string to the highest pole piece. I go for 2/32 inch on bass and treble sides for humbuckers, 3/32 inch on the bass and 2/32 inch on the treble for single coils, and 1/32 all around for active pickups. Check intonation in playing position. Things like gravity and pressure on the neck from a neck rest can noticeably affect intonation. I tend to go for .009 inch relief, and 2/32 inch action on the bass side and 3/64 inch action on the treble side. I then adjust as the guitar or player needs. I tend to play SGs - I have a 1983 "The SG" and 1991 SG-1. In E Standard I use 10-46, in D standard I use 11-48.

@@FuzzlordEffects I dig it. Both of course were bought used. The Challenger was $299 so I didn't think I could go wrong!

'16 Gibson LP Studio faded. I keep it in C#. Skinny top heavy bottom strings. But I measure my 8 thou from 1st-16th/17th fret. Any straighter than that and I get buzz on the first fret and action to high at 12. I'm currently at 3.5-4/64" on Bass and 3/64" on treble.

I am going to experiment with a Starcaster Contemporary. Got some 13-62 to put on it. We will see how it handles Fuzz and low tuning.

Jackson 7 string, I use a custom set of .10-.64 for the low b string, tuned to f# standard. Basically standard 8 string tuning but without the top string. I rarely use the low F#, I focus more on the B tuning and kick in that low string when appropriate.

Gibsons and Epiphone, C standard tuning. Usually run 10-46, have 11-52 on a couple. Also have a Gibson Les Paul in G standard with 13-56 flat wound on it.

I mostly use baritones for low stuff. Both are tuned to B standard and I can get to drop A with them. I have a cheap Agile that I want to take to my local shop and have it set up for D standard with a drop C.

Thanks and very informative. I've got a Schekter C-6Plus and after watching this I think I will just take it down and get it done professionally before I try it myself. I want to try a doom sound but I gotta do it right Thanks Fuzzlord!

I play a BC Rich Trace Warbeast with a Duncan Jazz Humbucker in the Neck & Lace DRop & Gain in the bridge. I use standard tuning (if it was good enough for Sabbath it good enough for me). Lastly, I have Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9-42. Weird combo but it works for me some how.

I have a Harley Benton Tele with humbuckers that is set up in C Standard with D'addario 12-54. Thinking about switching to 11-56 Cleartone's since I prefer using coated strings. It's awesome for the doom/death metal genres!

Double-necked electric mountain dulcimer with humbuckers in open C, 12-gauge strings :D Made the entire thing myself including the pickups and my fuzz/distortion pedal which is tape-head fuzz using germanium transistors and then hard-clipping with red LEDs on a push-pot.

Gibson Sonex 180 . C# standard or drop B . I went heavier strings recently with a pack of 12 - 56, but didnt like 24 gauge 3rd string or the 56 gauge 6th string so swapped for a 17 and 52. I really like this string setup (12, 16, 17, 32, 44, 52) but it’s impractical because I can’t buy 1 set with those gauges and I’m not gonna buy 2 packs each time I wanna change strings. Thanks for the video, I need to do a good set up on my guitar and this is straightforward and perfect for what I need to do.

Peavey T-60. 11-52. C# standard. I play some good old fashioned Sludge. I find the most important thing is that you have some sweet stage moves and you smoke a lot of dope.

I am mostly a thrash/death guy, so currently I play Washburn X50PROQ (ESP styled headstock) SD Custom 5/ SD '59 with 10-46's in D,Eb,E standard. Tone pot gutted out for coil split/ killswitch selector. Probably gonna buy a cheapo LP or something with 24.75 scale soon, tune it to C and slab in the Dimarzio X2N I have lying around for ages... Starting to get in that drony fuzz riffing, stuff is really meditative :) Cheers from Russia BTW!

Ernie Super Slinky (09's). Drop D. Thinner strings are easier to play expressively on, bend and gives a tighter low end.
