Amazing player. Saw him solo in a 200 seat venue last year. Blew me away. But... let's talk about that tone for a minute. I absolutely can't get enough of his les paul tone, and this video is a perfect example of it. Combined with his impeccable phrasing, it's just sublime.

I've seen Warren many times, with the ABB. He is an absolute monster with a guitar. Standing next to the incredible Derek Trucks, IMO makes them the best duo ever. Nice to see both of them getting the props they deserve. Great video!!

There's an interview with Jorgen Carlsson somewhere where he talks about the audition they threw at him. First, they handed him a list of a couple of HUNDRED songs to learn- then spot checked him for a couple of hours. After that, they just jammed, and the band threw every change up, switcheroo, and new direction they could think of at him, just to see what he'd do. He's had the gig for quite some time, now- so apparently, he did what they'd hoped, lol. He had some BIG shoes to fill. Allen Woody was a monster bass player! His first two gigs with them were a "normal" Mule show, then a special Halloween show of all Floyd covers- that ended up becoming their Dark Side of the Mule CD. Jorgen acquitted himself very well that night. (And Danny Louis absolutely channeled Richard Wright...)

I was lucky enough to see Gov't Mule with Warren Allen and Matt. I once waited in the rain for them to come back out after a rain delay during a free concert and they eventually did and then played for an hour and a half to the 25 people who stayed. I got Pneumonia but I don't regret it for a second.

Ive been lucky enough to see the Mule a few times and Warren is probably my favourite guitarist I've ever heard/seen live ( I'm 62 and have seen/listened to music all my life) and his tone is so good that it nearly brings tears to your eyes at times listening to him ! How Gov't Mule isn't more widely know still surprises me but then I guess, they're a band that plays music for music's sake, not commercial success ??

Love the song, Warren is amazing. From Almond Brothers to Gov’t Mule… carrying that tube amp drive. But Michael… your descriptions of these awesome songs to such beautiful detail is almost like hearing colors! I’ve sadly kinda had to not have the guitar in my hands for months since going back to working at the hospital all the time, not even using the little spare time wisely enough to catch your awesomely descriptive videos - until tonight with Warren … and I’ve just been rekindled in the ear and inspired as hell to pick er back up! What I’ve been missing!! Thank you brother man! You rock!

I'm a huge fan of Warren. His tone is incredible, tasty solos, the type of guitar playing that takes you on a journey. What should never be underestimated about Warren, is his fantastic song writing. So many musicians have been known to play Soldano SLO 100 amps but Warren is the first for me, that sound, It's him. Wether it's with The Allman Brothers or Mule. You know with the first note. That's what makes Warren Haynes one of the all time best IMO. Great analysis, I couldn't of said it any better myself.

Thanks Michael, I was lucky to see Gov't Mule live when Woody was still alive. The band had an energy that was incendiary, Woody played the mandolin on a couple tunes, a wonderful musician. This line up is very nice to hear, bad ass. Not in a band now, but I've been playing through a Sovtek Mig 100 head with the 4x12 slant cab for 20 years. My last band for ten years was 3pc power rock/blues/fusion-confusion-original music. I love the interplay of the amp and my guitar. Thanks again.

This was great! George Porter was feeling it, big time! Warren is one of my favorites. I just remembered I have a Government Mule show poster in a tube that I need to build a frame for. Guess I'll go rip some oak for a frame and set the guitar down for a minute. Thanks, man! Dude, I really enjoy and appreciate your videos, the excitement that you get in those moments that I refer to as "the chill," are awesome. People ask why I love going to shows and I tell them I'm chasing that chill. That's what you want...that moment when the right thing happens and you get those goose bumps, your hair tingles, and you close your eyes and have that goofy smile that is almost in disbelief of what you're hearing. To me, that's what it's about. That's the reward for the fan. I cannot imagine what it's like to be on stage making that moment and then feeding off the energy from the crowd. The importance of live music is in those moments when the guys on stage give it out, the crowd gives it back and it becomes a moment of synergy that makes you hug the complete stranger next to you, because you aren't strangers anymore after sharing that moment nobody can ever live again, or recreate. There will be other moments, but being there for each and every one that you possibly can is what I chase. The pandemic put me in a place where I had to grab that guitar I'd been terrified of for years, buy an amp, and start to learn and focus. I built a studio in my house, I have a bass, 2 strats, a semi hollow body washburn HB-35, two accoustics, some keys, percussion, a dj controller, soundboard, mics, pedals, and I make my own music for my podcast. Never would I have thought I'd know the circle of 5ths, or Dminor7, or a Dorian or Lydian scale. I'm just a meathead that builds and fixes shit. I still suck, but I don't care, because I've found joy and frustration in this journey that I've just begun and I like something that I'm going to fail at. Failure means you grow as long as you don't quit. Dude, I've said this before, but I am so grateful for cats like you, Rick Beato, Tim Pierce, Marty Schwartz, Taylor Larson, Paul Davids, Ben Eller, Phil McKnight, Dylan Mckerchie, Rhett Schull, Greg Koch, Tomo Fujita, and the list goes on and on. You all are f'n awesome and you put it out there for everybody. All you cats out there, whether it's theory, gear talk, reactions, breaking down songs, teaching fundamentals, whatever...it's changed my life for the better. I'd apologize for writing a novel, but I'm not sorry. Hopefully, you read this and know that what you are providing has at least made a difference in some schmuck's existence in the middle of Nowhere, WY. Happy New Year!

I wanted to pass on a thank you. Can't afford to join, but I am thankful for the ones you put up. I have played and toured a good bit of my life, bass and guitar, depending on the band and who needed which. All that time, I just played on what I thought was right, concentrating on taste, dynamics and what I felt was right to play. Then I finally started to teach myself theory, which has been a bitch. I saw I knew what was what ear-wise, but realized I could do so much more knowing the head stuff as well as the heart. That's why I am appreciating your work on these videos. It has been a real boost in my knowledge base, and has been hard to find, especially how, in my opinion, you do a great job of spreading your critiques around stylistically. So...I guess the question is, want to move to Texas and start a band?!? We can get famous....you know, and meet girls.

The one complaint I have about modern Blues and jam bands in general is the lack of a song as a vehicle for the music. Lyrics that go somewhere and also musically a song that takes a journey. To me Gov't Mule has always had great songs that stand on their own. Then Warren would expand and jam on those.

So glad you did some Mule and Warren! A lot of people get caught up on how fast you can play or how many notes you can hit in a scale, but Warren's playing and song writing tends to provoke much more emotion, or at least it does for me. I know you don't want to flood your channel with the same artists but it would be awesome to get your breakdown of another blues driven tune by Mule.
