I feel like one of the most underrated things about Jerry is what he does when someone else is on vocals or taking a solo. Jerry is ALWAYS playing something interesting and super tasteful in the background, he knows how to play in the background just as well as he knows how to play out in front.

Yes! Some of Jerry's greatest solos are on Bob songs...

Agree. Brent had an uncanny knack of doing the same. When Brent and Jerry were both the complimentary background for bob it was fantastic.

I saw Dylan this past Friday at the Orpheum in Boston. Highlight of the night was his cover of Brokedown Palace. The whole crowd was enraptured! I love the friendship and affinity the Dead and Dylan have for each other to this day! An enduring bond.

First off, thank you for these videos. Your analysis is gold. Ok, to your comment about Jerry knowing his theory...Jerry absolutely knows what he's doing, far more so than he's ever given credit for. There's a recorded interview from the 80's, I think with Fretboard, where he's asked straight out if he knows what he's doing musically. His answer is classic Jerry, humble and devoid of ego as always, deflecting the focus to others: "oh yeah, I know what I'm doing musically. The people I play with are too good for me not to know." You can hear the knowledge in his modulation choices and other on-the-fly decision making. it ain't being done blind.

I always found it funny that Weir would nail all the lyrics to this song and Desolation Row, but would always mess up the lyrics to Truckin' and Sugar Magnolia. Also for all the flak Brent gets for his dated 80's synth tones, dude was a monster on the B3. Shame he died so young

Great video. I always loved the band covering Dylan songs. One of my favorite things is when Jerry sings the higher Harmony and Bob is the low voice. It just has a really distinctive and full sound. Damn, how I miss that fat man!

There's a great interview where Jerry said he felt strange teaching Dylan his own songs. He asked him if he'd remember the lyrics. Dylan responded, the important ones. Fantastic video. Lots of helpful tips. Thanks.

And you're so right about the dynamics - plural. How many bands have we played in that had just 'dynamic'? Or the 'dynamics' consisted entirely of louder and louder...

I've seen a lot of live shows over the yrs....lots of jam bands like Phish, Strung Cheese, WSP and so many others. No other band listened to each other better than the Dead. And not only listened to each other, they got turned on by each other and inspired to "go for it" 87' to 90' was special. So grateful I got on that bus when I did. Still wish you'd do a lesson to Martin Sexton. His tuning. Tips for getting my thumb to play the bass lines...etc.etc.etc. "Can't Stop Thinking About You" from the Live Wide Open record would be great. ✌️❤️

One of the things I find fascinating about Dead And Company is when Bobby sings Jerry tunes, John gets to accompany in ways Jerry never could! It might be cool to pick a D&C Bobby sings Jerry song to pick apart just to see how different the approach can be!

All the tunes on the "Postcards..." album kick ass. I think they kept all of them in the repertoire. Did I read here that they were all blown away when they found out Bob Dylan wanted them for his backup band?

I am not a member yet. But I would like you to watch the music video by Billy Strings and his band along with Molly Tuttle. I would like you to watch how them two connect on this song. I would like you to tell me what Molly is thinking with her facial expressions playing with Billy. Watch how he pushes her but she stays right with him. I would love to here your opinion of what is going through her mind. They are playing at the greyfox in 2019.

I’m a big Dead fan, but prefer their studio recordings. I know sacrilegious to most fans. But some of their live shows just meander around for me, especially shows from the 80s and 90s. They have some great songs on their albums though!
