I've always had so much respect for key players who can do that. Another of my favorite players is a young girl (I think she is 17 or 18 now, I can't remember) called "Domi" and she is un-freaking-believable. She might not be to the level of Cory Henry yet, but she doesn't need to be. Her style is also very different, too. She plays with another kid who is even a year or two younger than she is called "J.D. Beck" and he's already ridiculously good drummer. I highly recommend looking up those two if you haven't already. They just did a set on the "Zildjian Live" series which, by the way, needs to be at the top of your list right now if you haven't been watching them yet. Larnell Lewis did a set on the series last summer and OMG he is a beast. The house band for the series was put together by Sput Searight, who is another prominent Snarky Puppy drummer, and Nate Werth, who is the incredible percussionist for Snarky Puppy.

That's why I love watching Sean Martin doing the 'ole facepalm once Cory gets going and then eventually he's like "you know what, fuck this, I can't even sit next to this guy right now" and then to goes to sit with the rest of the audience in awe of what is happening on the keyboards. I think, perhaps, my favorite thing about Snarky Puppy is how much respect each of them have for each other. Mike League constantly with the stank face during solos of other band members. The icing on the cake is that ALL OF THEM are master class musicians and they *still* can sit there in awe of what their bandmates pull out of their arse on any given night. I love it so damn much!

Every time I see him or take my friends to see him everyone there says "this is the most incredible music I have seen in my life". I once even saw him do a completely improvised mind-blowing set with Isaiah Sharkey on guitar (who played with John Mayer, and Taron Lockett (who played with Prince, Snoop Dog, Willie Nelson etc.) on drums Seriously think Cory Henry could play a watermelon with his ass and make better music than most. This set of sessions for "We Like It Here" was the 3rd time in a row that Snarky recorded an album LIVE in a studio (with an audience), previous instances are "Tell Your Friends" and "Ground Up" (great videos of pretty much all of that stuff). They chose to do that because they are first and foremost a LIVE band, this is how they play all the time. OK, it is true that when they do this, they do multiple runs through the material, like might book 4 nights in the studio and do 2 sets each night with the audience, so they do get maybe 8 takes of every tune, and obviously the ones we see in the recording are the best takes, but still. I've seen Snarky play live 8 times over the past few years, and their performances are aways insanely wonderful.

I revisit that performance every once in a while for a pleasing reality check. One of the best performances on youtube for sure and one of the best keyboard solos I've ever witnessed anywhere. No sample packs here, just raw indisputable talent. The more you analyze this entire performance, the more it reveals itself to be simply amazing. And hats off to you for being humble... It says a lot about you also.

What I like about this tune in their repertoire is that a different member of the band does the extended solo each time they play it; Cory Herry's turn happened to be on this live recording and it made him a well known name overnight. There are some serious musical theory vids on KZbin regarding the tune's structure and Henry's solo. Glad you reviewed this; your reaction reminded me of mine the first time I heard it.

They ARE all unicorns. Michael League front bass player) is the band leader and as soon as they arrived at the studio in the Netherlands he walked to the piano and started writing the music. He didn't even remove his backpack. It took him a couple of days to compose and arrange everything (well, I believe he had various written ideas that he brought with him that he started with). As others have written, their original drummer couldn't go with the band due to passport/visa problems and Michael called up Larnell Lewis and asked "can you help us out and take a plane to the Netherlands to record our live session album?" to which Larnell answered "Sure, when do you need me?", thinking a couple of weeks or months.. Michael answered "well... tomorrow?". Larnell had to learn nearly all of the songs on the plane over from a rough demo that Michael had sent. He learned all the rhythms, tempos, signature changes and so on and built his drumming on that. He's a "monster" as a drummer and he's just as humble as he's a virtuoso drummer. Obviously Cory Henry is a master on the keyboard as well. When Shaun Martin listened and looked at what Cory Henry was doing he was just blown away.. and Shaun have 4 grammys (Cory's got 6). That's the level they're at.

This was so fun. I really wouldn't be surprised if you'd heard him before, but I would LOVE to see you watch Jacob Collier's stuff. He's an absolute musical genius who plays just about every instrument ever made. He has many many must-sees, but his arrangement of the Flintstones theme was one of his first Grammy winners. He has bigger, more mind melting stuff (Moon River, All Night Long) but I think starting with his earlier, more pared down stuff might be nice. The guy's a real treasure, though and I'd love to overload you with other song recommendations if you like him.

My reaction exactly everytime I watch Lingus. Also note that the video producer Colin Benders used to be a known Dutch trumpeteer (Kyteman) and is currently mainly known as a techno composer/producer working with modular synthesizers. The recording is in his studios which used to be a well known pop venue in Utrecht (tivoli Oudegracht). Some info from a Dutchie :)

This song rocks, but there is another song on this album called 'What about me'. It's filmed in the same way and room and everything. And it's like this song crossed with Jimi Hendrix and there is another guitarist in the band called Bob Lanzetti. And he delivers one of the eeriest and most fascinating guitar solos I have seen in a while. Definitely check it out if you thought this was awesome. Edit: It also has Larnell (the drummer) give one of his most badass performances.

You should watch the short documentary for "We like it here". Short summary of some very interesting facts: - Most of the band arrived at location on a Thursday and were set to perform the coming Monday. - The music they were set to perform wasn't composed beforehand. They made it while they were there. - Larnell Lewis (Drummer) arrived on the day they were set to perform (Monday). He listened through audio recordings for the songs on the plane ride there and only had 2 hours of practice with the band before performing.
