Ween is a deep dive band and one of the greatest most talented over all. The guitarist is a woodshop player. He’s not like a Steve Vai or Joe Sachmo etc. however he’s so comfortable with his instrument that he’s like a Jimi Hendrix, it’s an extension of him self. He doesn’t always shred because that’s not what Ween is about but when he does it’s orgasmic in nature and something wonderful to hear.

Seeing Ween at that point in time, in a way I feel sorta spoiled by the experience - like how could they or anyone rock so hard ?? - for you see this tour was not just the first time I saw them, it was the first time I’d ever even heard them! Changed me forever. Roseland Ballroom or Irving Plaza, can’t remember, but Gener was wearing a Mr. Sparkle tshirt and the whole band got loaded, just racking-up the empties on top of the amps, announcing every song like THIS NEXT ONE IS CALLED _____ BY WEEN NEW HOPE PENNSYLVANIA THANK YOU. Doorman took my nugs but literally the first person i walked up to inside the venue, I asked “umm, weeds?” and they reached in their pocket and just handed me a loose 8th like “uhhh, how’s that, that ok?” Yeah, man, that’s perfect 👌 ❤️ Also, not knowing what I was in for, when they all took the stage and I saw Glenn in a polo and Wranglers get behind the keys I was like “ha, whose dad is that?” Then, within minutes, my face, they melted it, they melted it clean off 🤯

@jebudus4 жыл бұрын
Argus for sure. Am key, medieval music, Greek myth lyrics; English folk/prog-rock brilliance . The coda is revelatory, like so many moments of their songs, which is just a slice of the musical pie that is Ween. They cover most of the musical landscape; prosaic to ethereal; from the sublime to the ridiculous. They nail everything they borrow, but as Dean says, it’s just the way Ween sounds. Which is to say they make the influences their own, with deftly sly artfulness, snuggled up to their cruder side. They are musical geniuses.

Those are just a few that come to mind but don't even scratch the surface of Dean's chops. This band never gets old.
@JonesJr_art4 жыл бұрын
Deaner is brilliant. You should do a deep dive. Honestly, Ween, in general, should be regarded as one of the most underrated, under the radar, experimental bands of the last 30 years. Deaner has a huge catalog of legendary riffs and amazing guitar songs. Complex tempo changes are just the beginning, genre changes mid-song, strange keys, and surprises abound. This band did a country album, an album completely based on the sea, (that's right, a water album) and a majority of their work could be stated to have no genre and are difficult to categorize. In these comments, you'll see many suggestions, all of them good. I'd venture that many of them will list 3-5 songs that could be the next one. Truthfully difficult to pick one song from Deaner's incredible catalog. So based on you being a guitar teacher, I will choose A Tear for Eddie. Every guitarist should learn that song and it would be a great song to teach. That being said, I highly recommend you listen to a sample of everything suggested. You won't regret it.

WEEN! One of my favorite bands! Hands down! So unique. As a matter of fact, my band, Rare Dirt, has covered their songs for many years! They're pure inspiration for all us nerdy house bands! More Ween coverage, please!

An endlessly fascinating band. They run the gamut from the juvenile and puerile to the sublime, always with great musicianship and an ear for a melody. And often very funny to boot. She Wanted To Leave (The Mollusk) and Fluffy (12 Golden Country Greats) are great jokes wrapped in tearful, beautifully played tunes. Sometimes irritating, sometimes just offensive (Mr Richard Smoker) but always forgiveable because they're never boring. They even fell apart 'interestingly'. For 30 years, since Push Th' Little Daisies, it's never been long between visits.

Lol, how is Richard Smoker offensive? Toughen up a bit dude. Imagine Bill Murray playing Richard Smoker, lol.

Let’s go to brow town!!! A lot of commenters are suggesting “A Tear for Eddie” which no doubt is a fantastic instrumental composition, and a total nod to “Maggot Brain” I suggest you check out “Voodoo Lady” from the same show. As it’s not an instrumental, rocks, it’s got the funk, and it might be one of the best versions of the song on tape. Keep up the good work. And stay brown.

I started seeing them live as a duo on tours for God Ween Satan and The Pod. Dean was a guitar genius then and continues to amaze. You could devote an entire KZbin channel to this 🤟🏼 was also lucky enough to see some of their first shows with a band in the summer of 94 in NYC, with Daniel Johnston opening.

I LOVE this Ween song and always said it had an STP-like balls out modern hard rock vibe. And he's exactly right- Ween changes between extreme genres song to song, and while they're kind of goofing thematically with the lyrics often, they're also doing a very musically tight, technically respectful tune within that genre. For instance, Spirit of 76 (smooth R&B ballad), Baby Bitch (Yacht Rock ballad), Voodoo Lady (weird, percussion driven, alt folk rock) and on and on. They're such a great, original band.
@KillPixelGames4 жыл бұрын
"What Ween song should I do after this?" Pick a genre so we can narrow it down a bit :P As a fellow guitarist and Ween fan I'd probably suggest The Argus, The Grobe, Buckingham Green or The Stallion prt 4. As a spectator that wants to see the world burn I'd suggest Pollo Asado, L.M.L.Y.P., The Stallion prt 1, I Play It Off Legit, Hey Fat Boy (Asshole)... or really anything off Pure Guava.

"Unless they have some kind of crazy nonsense" LOL... All hail Boognish! Anywayz... holy cow, introducing people to Ween is one of life's greatest joys. I've been in love w/ them for nearly 30 years and have seen them tons during that time period. A game I like to play with new friends, once I get to know them well enough musically, is the Ween Genre Game, where the person gives me 10 musical genres (with a few stipulations, such as genre meaning musical phrasing and stuff... they can't be instrument-specific, such as big band, and they can't have specific lyrical meaning, such as Christmas music). I've never been unable to come up w/ songs to match the genres offered. Note: No one said the songs had to be GOOD. A lot of their music is intentionally brown, and we love them all the more for it. Seriously though, if you get the chance to see them live, trust me, it's incredible. Oh, also... great video, you have a new subscriber. Also, take care and stay safe!

That solo just punched me in the teethe the first time I heard it. Deaner is so underrated as a player. Voodoo Lady has a great improvised solo on the same concert - Live in Chicago. So many great songs. You mentioned country. Pretty Girl and Holding You are great straight up country songs, Ween style. Piss Up a Rope is classic Ween. Nice guitar you have. Love these videos. Especially when your dissecting the Ween. I’m feelin greasy mommy, please don’t let me die. Am I gonna see God mommy, please don’t let me die. Stink of Vaseline mommy, please don’t let me die......smile on Mighty Jesus...Spinal Meningitis’s got me down. That’s as creative as it gets. Gener and Deaner are genius. Drug addled geniuses. Paintin the town brown. Oh, Poopship Destroyer, live is bad ass. I told you to jam up the frequencies on channel two. The chocolate stew was you know who baby!!! What’s the biggest thing you ever done seen???? BIG JILM MOTHER FUCKA!

"It's Gonna Be a Long Night" has some interesting guitar parts and is in the vein of Motorhead. "Gabrielle" is a very obvious nod to Thin Lizzy. "Mutilated Lips" is an odd tune with some wonderful use of open chords along the neck. "Tried and True" would be a fun challenge, because they messed around with tape speed with recording and playback. "Help Me Scrape the Mucus of my Brain" is a brilliant country tune.

When Prince died Dean Ween became my favorite living guitarist. He might not be the best, but he can play and just has an amazing sound. I say do "A Tear For Eddie" next. It's about one of my favorite non-living guitarists, Eddie Hazel.
