Awesome, what a great teacher, thank you for this video. I totally relate to the spiritual aspect of guitar technique like vibrato-playing music is for sure a spiritual endeavor, especially when it comes to deep self expression through the instrument. If you watch some of the most amazing musicians (including guitar players) their performance is a very spiritual experience for sure, helps you tap into a deeper place.

Justin, It’s funny you have us start with pulling down, which is a heck of a lot easier and more natural for me, than to bend upwards at first. I realize there are many ways to do vibrato but unless it’s in the first string, I believe I’ll use this technique.

Thanks for this. I have played on and off for many years and tremelo is something I have always struggled with. I used to play with my best friend who was amazing. He could melt the freaking keyboard with his fingers while he was having a casual conversation with me. I hated him... Anyway, I'm over that... sort of. But, he used to do these amazing bends with a vibrato at the upper end of the bend. Something I have never been able to do. I'm older and retired now and I have the time to get back into playing. Unfortunately my body doesn't respond the way it used to. I don't have the finger strength and I was lucky enough to inherit some of my dad's arthritis. So I am still struggling. But I don't want to give up. My best friend was fortunate enough to be able to make a career out of his ability on the guitar and has played with some fairly big name musicians like Eddie Money and Blue Oyster Cult. He is only a year younger than me and he still plays just like he always has. Anyway, I digress. All of this to say that I hope I can use videos like these to try and get back into it. Back in the day I used to be somewhat good. But life got in the way and I quit playing for many years. I still have the 25/50 Anniversary Les Paul and the Flying V2 that I bought brand new back in 1980. At least I never got rid of those. We'll see what happens. What kind of exercises could I do to build up that kind of strength in my hands? Cuz I really struggle with being able to keep the string pushed against the fret while trying to bend it up and down smoothly. At least your video has showed me that my had position wasn't correct.

Precisley what I need to know. Watching guitarists. It really does look like they are just pushing and pulling with thier fingers. Just doing the one fi get vibrato aka B. B. king is how I started. In the beginning it was very awkward and was using only course motor skills. Then one day it clicked and became a fine motor skill. Not fine enough. As I can only do it at one speed. But that will change. I like the way demonstrated here and I'll work on getting that control in the hand.

My upwards vibrato is much slower than the downwards version. I guess that's normal, is it? Maybe because the anchor point at the index root doesn't exist on the upwards version and the forces have to detour via the thumb that's building the fundament.

I don't necessarily agree with what he says about the "incorrect" way to do vibrato, with your fingertips coming down directly on the strings. I've done it that way for years, and my vibrato sounds great. Just feels like I have better control and leverage that way. It's just a different way to do it, and you could just as easily make a mistake doing it the "right" way. However, I have been wanting to start doing it this way, if for no other reason than it's not as hard on your fingers. =)
