That's a really nice tribute, David. Great that you mentioned Guthrie, Shaun, Phil and some of the other great tutors... And thanks for mentioning the 100 Great Licks issue that I put together more than 20 years ago... I'd forgotten about that one! You have a great KZbin channel. Best wishes from the UK! Cliff

Yes thank you Sir! For the record, my son (whom is 10 years old ) and I watch every episode, even if I don't " care" for band or want need info, the way you lay out all info is useful, well explained and appreciated. You've introduced both he and I to new/ new to me ( obviously him) bands and materials. Thank you thank you, happy Thanksgiving. We wish you the best ❤

Thanks for sharing this with us. I don't think today there is that excitement anymore that we have certainly had in the 80's when waiting each month for a guitar magazine to arrive at your local paper shop. Mine was the Guitarist magazine each month but occasionally we would find an American magazine which may have had that floppy vinyl attached which could have been "Eugene's trick bag" or Living Colours "Cult of Personality" etc... It is sad to hear this new as it's and end of another era. Best wishes David from the UK. 🎶🎶🎶🎶😊😊😊😊

All credit to Neville Marten - great great guitar player, editor and guiding mind behind the format and contributors to GT - he insisted on keeping the cd which came with the mag - despite managements attempt to remove it. I have all issues and cd's since before 1996. Can't understand why, when there's clearly a market they can't find sufficient ability in management to make it work.

Thank you David ! We live in a whole new world. We've gone from analog kids to digital dudes in our lifetime. My story is the same as most of the cats that follow your channel. Apple boxes full of guitar magazines. It's been hard to let go of them. I've been giving them away to the folks who want them and to the music stores in my community. It was time to pass this treasure of knowledge and wisdom on to other players. I feel like all I've learned from these magazines has made me a better guitarist and musician. As Miles Davis once said take all the music theory and technique you've learned and forget it all and just play your ass off...😎👍🙏🤟🎼🎹🥁🎸

Loved this. For me, my first issue was in late 95 A to Z of great riffs. This introduced me a certain Mr Van Halen. I learned about so many guitar heroes from this and Total guitar for the lols.

GT nurtured many truly great players and exposed us to many forms of guitar expression. Alas, now it's another casualty of the digital information age where people only see what they search for. I have quite a collection of guitar magazines myself, all stored in air-tight boxes, but I haven't looked at them in years; not since I got into computers and discovered a new world of interactive teaching resources. Progress is always a double-edged sword.

there is one good thing for a long time subscriber like myself, I can finally catch up with all the good stuff they produced over the years, I also own stacks of this mag and while I got rid of many old mags already, those GTs will stay with me till the end. Thank you for this lesson!

Agreed. I used to refer to GT as being the equivalent to a University course - the content was top notch. Even today i still revisit some of the older mags if i need to work on something or a song. I was lucky enough to make acquaintance with Eric Roche via the magazine and he came to my house a few times. Very talented and a top bloke who is sadly missed.

I bought the 2nd copy of GT and continued collecting for a number of years . Was learning Since I’ve Been Loving You from the same October 1996 edition only the other day (p.88). I’m sure there was a Bernie Torme edition somewhere in that box Mr Brewster 😉

David, you are correct. This magazine is/was great. I think that Jeff Beck edition (1996?), was my first one. I've learned so much from that magazine. Great video! My current favorite is Guthrie's rendition of the keyboard/organ part of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. This was the edition with RHCP on the cover.

Friend who was studying in the UK at the time brought me the first two issues… kept buying them until well in the 2000s although the quality went down a bit over time. But the first years were amazing - they transcribed really obscure shred solos (“Loch Rannoch”, for example) and the only mag that could tip it is/was Young Guitar.

Thanks for acknowledging this. I’ve got a stack of magazines like yourself but also got some digital copies on my iPad. I 'completed my collection' for 30 quid or something a while back (goes back to 2009, I think). Annoyingly it’s not going to be supported going forward. I’ve downloaded them all now but there’ll be no way of preserving them going forward. Anyway - sad to see it go. Was always head and shoulders above the competition.

Although I hadn't bought Guitar Player for a while, I bought the final issue-I put it on my list to buy it--but of course, like many print magazines, it had become very slender. I think that it will remain as Web site, but it had been in print since the mid or late 60s. When I first started playing guitar, I got a lot of the magazines that had tabs of entire songs, but with experience, I started to prefer Guitar Player-instead of tabbing songs, it had columns that showed licks from songs, and explained why they work--much more helpful to developing a personal style. I also liked Guitar Player because instead of focusing on glam metal and shred guitar like many publications were doing, it covered all styles of guitar from folk and flamenco to blues and country and classic rock. I also have a few copies of Guitar Techniques, I know some place I have the one with Jeff Beck and a blue background, I have a few of the CDs here some place. Print magazines are just disappearing, the newsstands are not very full.

Only recently have i learned to alternate pick correctly after decades. Guitar world and metal method didnt mention how to select pick width or strict alternate picking, maybe they did and i wasnt ready? Theo Ziras i asked he told me how to hold the pick and Justin Hombach told me that with even number of picks on each string pick direction stays same and odd it changes, when changing strings. The dilemma of directional vs strict outside picking wasnt covered in magazines. Basically "whatever feels comfortable". Especially Metal Method, the most general worst.. Then again maybe it was just me and i didnt pay attention? Problem with stopping of publishing is if the internet goes is anything archived?
