Guitar Tone Tuesday: Ep 214 - Baritone Strings On A Standard Scale Length: Yes Or No??
IMPORTANT Please be warned to not tune your guitar any higher than standard baritone tuning (B, E, A, D, F#, B) and be prepared to make some adjustments to your action and intonation. I also wouldn't try this on a guitar with a particularly thin neck.
Visually Impaired since birth, Lucas Haneman of the LH Express uses his ears and hands to guide him when choosing gear, writing songs and recording parts. Will you agree with his assessment? Today we conduct an inexpensive experiment. These are always fun to do on the channel, as I just want to keep helping all of you inspired to
pick up your guitars every week, so perhaps some of you would enjoy trying it for yourselves.
This episode stemmed from a question I have been asking myself for a long time. Can you put super thick baritone guitar strings on a standard scale length electric guitar, tune it like a baritone, and make it sound good? Moreover will the guitar function properly, stay in tune and give you that unique baritone-like tone, without having to go out and get an actual baritone
guitar? Well check out this video and be the judge.
Today, I used some D'addario 14/68 Medium gauge baritone strings, and if you'd like to try this experiment yourself it can be a lot of fun. If you're someone who prefers thinner strings you should try the lights in a 13/62 gauge, as this is what D'addario recommends for down tuning on standard scale-length guitars.

What did you think of the sound of these D'addario baritone strings? Is this something you would try yourself, or do you think getting a
true baritone guitar is the only way to really do this? Let your voice be heard in the comment section below!

Quite the improvement from the earlier mod if I recall correctly. It reminds me a little of what Charlie Hunter does with his fan-fret guitar, suggesting a warm bass mix with the lead guitar. This Brown Bear was the guitar I first saw you play with in 2016!! I was impressed then as I am now with that beast. On the opposite side, I picked up a Martin Backpacker for my camping trip last week that uses ultra-light strings and playing it is quite the adjustment, especially with a capo. Ever try those?

Hey my friend! I’m so sorry for missing this last week. Glad you like the mod. I’m having fun with the strings. Definitely a big improvement over what I had on the guitar before to achieve a similar effect, and I agree that it does a bit of that Charlie Hunter thing, though I’m such a huge fan of his that perhaps some of that was self-inflicted. :-) perhaps subconsciously self-inflicted. Haha. I remember trying a couple of those Martin backpacker guitars years ago. They are very cool! I ended up going for an applause backpacker style guitar made by ovation though instead when I was about 12 years old. Was a Christmas gift from my parents. I still have it in fact and played it last weekend when our family was up at a boat with another family. It’s great for those kinds of situations. I don’t recall that I’ve ever played ultra light acoustic strings., but whenever I try someone’s guitar with nine gauge electric strings, I feel the sensation you are speaking of. It’s odd to me as someone who generally favours slightly heavier strings, that may change in time though, so perhaps next time I restring my travel guitar. I should try some of those ultralight acoustic strings to see what they are like.

@@LucasHaneman An applause backpacker? That sounds interesting. My cousin had an Applause knock off of a strat back in the mid-80;s. I wonder if that would have been the same company. Light strings on the Martin Backpacker makes sense as the neck curvature had me shaving the saddle for better action. Such a convenient size instrument for outings as you mentioned!

Indeed, the same company! I don’t know what happened to them. From what I heard ovation fell out of the public eye a few years ago, so I believe the same must’ve happened to applause perhaps before hand.. the backpacker style of guitars are interesting indeed. This applause has a slightly different shape as it actually resembles a guitar with a more traditional shape that has been squished to be narrow in width just like your backpacker

I came close to quitting guitar this week, so probably can’t assess it as a good one. I’m still unable to bring myself to play.

Don't give it up. It took me almost 50 years to get it right and it was worth it.

Hey man. I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through this. It wouldn’t be easy. I hope you’re able to get your inspiration back. You’ve got some beautiful guitars and it sounds like you’re a great player. So keep your head up. At the end of the day, Music should be bringing joy, so I hope you’re able to get back to what counts in time. Fingers crossed buddy.

@@LucasHaneman Thanks man, I appreciate it. It’s been pretty rough for me lately and I struggle with imposter syndrome like crazy. ASD has some serious drawbacks to it sometimes. I have been dealing with massive burnout for months now also. I feel like a slug, and that doesn’t help much either.

I'd say yes. It sounds deeper and richer. What do you think, Lucas?

Personally I like it! I don’t have a standard baritone guitar to compare it to but for me it’s doing the job of what that type of guitar would do but it feels more familiar as it’s a normal-ish telecaster. Thanks a bunch for watching as always!
