Lucas…I’m trying to find a good Eastman (same as yours) but I’m only finding ones with bareknuckle humbuckers and “Custom made” humbuckers. Are these not the same as Armstrong design? Any feedback on this cause I NEED to have one! Thank you

So your tuners and pickups are aftermarket? Or did you buy it like that…I want that EXACT setup!!
@LucasHaneman3 жыл бұрын
@@NickBryant hey there. Sorry for taking a while to get back to you. No this guitar is completely stock. Up until 2012 from what I know these guitars came with the Kent Armstrong pickups. I believe the confusion is that they are called “custom designed pickups” or something to that effect. I think you’re looking for the version of the guitar with the custom made humbuckers if that’s what you’re seeing. After 2012 they switched to Lollars which are also amazing, and lots of people would say even better than these. I don’t know though, I’ve never wanted to change these ones out as I love the top end and slightly scooped mid range sound they have. The tuning machines are stock as well. If you’re looking on the used market I believe my personal guitar was made sometime between September and November 2011. I purchased it brand new in late January/early February 2012, and it’s been one of my favourite long-term guitars. No modifications except a lot of wear and tear from being used on a couple hundred gigs more than likely and many recording sessions. I believe the finish is called antique violin by the way. Hope this helps

Great, tasteful playing Lucas...I plan on getting an Eastman guitar one day, in large part because of the wider nut than other semi-hollowbodies. I just did a review on my channel of a Korean Hohner semi- hollow that has Gibson 57 classics in it. A very recent acquisition. Keep up the great content.

Thanks so much! Sounds like a really cool guitar you’ve got there. I’m going to check out that demo. Yes, I have come to love the wider nut on this Eastman. In fact, the Gibson that I traded for this guitar had an extremely narrow neck and that’s one of the reasons why I could not bond with it. I Purchased the Eastman in January or February 2012, and I have loved it and played it a ton Live/on record as well. Can’t recommend the Eastman stuff enough!

Hey Lucas, love the Eastman guitars and just ordered a travel model. Have you gotten to play an SB '59 Eastman? If so, can you compare the different necks between your semi-hollow and the SB? Do you think the smaller nut width of the SB would be more comfortable for players with small hands?
@LucasHaneman4 жыл бұрын
Hello. Glad to hear that you have enjoyed your experience with the Eastmans so far. To me the neck on the 59 that I tried was comfortable. It didn’t strike me as being anything out of the ordinary if that makes sense. It just felt very nice. The one and 11th Sixteenths nut with was comfortable in the hand, and I would call the neck shape a medium C (Not too big, and not too small). In that regard it was more like the actual vintage Gibsons I have tried.. It didn’t have the big shoulders of a 58 or 59 Les Paul, it was a true sea shape, at least the one that I tried so I would say that for some one with small hands it wouldn’t be anything unwieldy. I found it quite similar to the neck on this T185 MX that I own, but just with the narrower and more standard nut. Hope that helps. I also really enjoyed the weight of the example I tried. It was nice to try a Les Paul that didn’t weigh much at all. I would put it somewhere in the 7 pound range. It was nice and resonent.

Hi Lucas, thanks a lot for your very instructive Video. I would like to know the prize of the Orville semi-hollow guitar. Which one would you prefer: the Orville or the Eastman guitar? Thank you in advance. Cheers
@LucasHaneman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for tuning in! From what I know the Oreville can be found for around $1000 if you’re lucky, maybe 1200. They shouldn’t cost too much more than that in my humble opinion. My personal preference is for the Eastman, but it should be said that it does not have the traditional 335 spec. I love typical 335 style guitars, but the Eastman differs in almost every way except for the shape. It has a solid maple top, solid mahogany back and sides, a mahogany neck with Ebony fingerboard, and just a small block under the bridge. Why do I like it so much? It just feels right to me as it’s a little smaller than a typical 335 so it fits me well, and I’m OK with it not being a super traditional guitar. To me it sounds like it’s in the same vein but with a little more top end, and A slightly more scooped mid range compared to the normal 335 style guitars. I just found it in a music store and it really spoke to me. 10 years later it’s still inspiring me, so it was a great purchase! Really enjoyed spending some time with that Oreville as well though. For a traditional 335 style, as long as you don’t care too much about the name on the Headstalk, not having a true nitrocellulose finish etc., it’s a wonderful wonderful instrument, and you will save a ton.
@jamesmaddock259 Жыл бұрын
For 40 years I’ve been looking for an affordable and great sounding ES335 .Not until I picked up the Eastman T59V did I find one that really spoke to me . The wide fret board , the incredible quality of the build , the finish and most importantly the sound . Not too bright . A sweet tone across all pick up configurations . Articulate and responsive. I really felt like I’d hit the jackpot . And less than $2000. ( and I’m not a wealthy man !)I couldn’t walk out without it . I’d encourage all guitarists to give Eastman a try .

New guy here again. Trying to check out more of your video offerings. This was both informative and entertaining. I'm a tele guy, but if money were no object, I'd get me a 335. I've played one just once, years ago, and it was amazing! The only 335 alternatives I've tried have been Epiphones: a Dot and a Sheraton II. I actually liked the Dot better than the Sheraton, which surprised me. I knew about Eastman alternatives (though I've never had the chance to play one), but I was unaware of the Orville alternative. Of those two in your video, I liked the Orville a bit better. I don't know if it was the larger body size, center block, pickups (probably all of the above), but that one was my preference.
@LucasHaneman3 жыл бұрын
thanks so much for watching again! As a prominently Fender style player/lover of long scale guitars, I find the 335 to be the most comfortable of all the Gibson style offerings. It’s probably because of where the bridge/neck sit, but for whatever reason it feels a lot more familiar than say a Les Paul or SG. Of course the tone is subjective and I do like the Orville guitar, but I have owned the Eastman for 10 years now, and one thing I love about it is the longer 25 inch scale length as opposed to the 24.75 on the Orville. Otherwise they are both great instruments and for sure the Orville is more of the True 335 thing. Along with the telecaster and Strat, I find the 335 style guitar to be one of the most beneficial is it has the girth of the humbuckers, but with more of an airy quality because of the semi hollow body. In an odd way you can sound a little telecaster like sometimes, when playing one, which I adore. I find them extremely extremely versatile just like a telecaster in fact :-). You don’t have to invest a ton of money to get one, so when you have the means you should look into that. The Eppiphone stuff has come along way in the last couple of years in fact. I did a review on a 339 a while back, which I really enjoyed playing, and you can get one for A very reasonable price

@@LucasHaneman Good and bad. The guitar build quality is good. The setup was pretty bad. The tuning stability was terrible. It just wouldn't stay in tune. So I've put locking tuners and a string butler on it. That improved it a lot. Now I'm having a new nut cut for it as the strings are still binding in the nut a bit. Hopefully that will solve the rest of the tuning puzzle with it. Apart from those issues, I love it.

Oh no! That’s too bad. Sorry to hear that. I haven’t had those kinds of issues with mine but of course not all guitars are created equal unfortunately. Hi Lucas, Lovely playing. I recently picked up the same Eastman model and had a quick question about the neck angle. All the guitars I’ve played or owned in the past had flat neck angle. Meaning the neck sits flat with the body. But the Eastman neck is a little angled. It looks like it is bent backwards. Is it normal? I love everything about the guitar. Everything screams quality but can’t really wrap my head around the neck angle. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
@LucasHaneman4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Glad to hear of your purchase and that you are generally happy with it. Picking up mine right now I do realize what you were saying a little bit. I think that’s a feature that is commonly found on arch top guitar‘s, A little bit of a backwards neck angle. That just means that you have to raise the bridge a little when compared to a normal straight neck angle as far as my own experience goes. If you really find the neck is going back then you might have a bit of a back boww. You can check this with a ruler and if your neck is tilting back more than normal you can adjust the truss rod to give the neck a little relief. I had never really noticed the neck angle on mine, so perhaps this is the issue you were having? My apologies. It’s hard to say anything else without the guitar in front of me. Glad you are enjoying playing it though and thank you for checking out the video.!

An old mentor of mine had a Les Paul stolen from the back of his car in 1995, and just last year a local guitar Repair Man saw it listed on a website. As usual a very thorough discussion. The proof is in the playing and each guitar has its merits. Although the (Gibson factory) 335 is not represented here, I think in future it would be helpful to borrow a real one for the sake of comparison. We've all heard 335's being played. They are the standard for all others of the genre. While the two you've demoed here are lovely, I surely would enjoy hearing the real deal for comparison. Also, if possible, could you please add any personal thoughts on pitfalls of the guitars? Thanks again for this terrific service you are offering to musicians everywhere.

No real pitfalls to mention on these two instruments to be completely honest. The tuning stability is great and they both play really well. If I owned the 335 made in Japan I would probably replace the tuners eventually, and the finish on the Eastman is perhaps a tad delicate, but I don’t know if these are really pitfalls. They are both very well-made instruments .

The 335 wasn't the first Electric Spanish guitar; the series had been going on for decades. They developed from arch tops and some had one cutaway or none. The ES-175 was the previous best known ES guitar and was only dropped in 2019. There have been very few new ES's since the 50s; the 345, 355 and 339 (a scaled down 335) and one or two others. They're called Electric Spanish because they're played in the same position as a Spanish guitar (i.e. with the sides resting on the thigh) as opposed to the Hawaiian style guitars that were also popular then which were played face up on the lap.

Thanks for the comment and glad you liked the video. I prefer the 186 and 185 by Eastman over the 386, as they have solid wood construction. Definitely a different animal though. Glad you enjoy the Orville And happy that you are digging the axes you have. That’s really important. Thanks for checking it out, and happy picking!

@@LucasHaneman Yes, you are right about a solid wood guitar can be better but in my opinium not always. The Gibson ES-335 Anchor Stud Bigsby is laminated but with the best wood plates and it sounds so very good. I also have two USA Guid X-160 hollow body guitars and they sound awesome. One is equipped with original vintage 1958 DeArmond pickups and the other one has TV-Jones Classic and Classic + pickups. They both sound very, very good but the one with the original vintage DeArmonds sounds awesome. You can check my band "The Catsomkes" on facebook if you may be interested.Keep on doing what you are doing . You're a great player !

Nice man. Sounds like some great guitars there with interesting pickups. Funny, I just put up a video yesterday about filtertrons. To me they are a great option. I will check out your band. Thanks for passing that along! I appreciate the kind words again

Flipping lovely tone. 30 seconds of nice playing beats 3 minutes of awful widdling - what we normally get from guitar 'owners' with more cash than love for the instrument. Get me! But you know what I mean...

Thanks for the kind words. I completely get you. Lol

Find that hard to believe as i have a vintage sunburst orville by gibson 335. Poly finish and the pickups are nothing special . They sound hotter as I can tell in this video as well .

The Orville Gibson spec sounds deeper with more bass and warm, but the Eastman sounded more balances, rich and sophisticated? my 2¢. In another comparison - I have an ES335 copy: it's a Vintage VSA555 that also has great tone, decent hardware, but finish and neck may not be the best.

Thanks Guy! Would be curious to see that guitar sometime. I’ve never tried one

Shame you couldn't get your hands on a Yamaha SA2200 or Schecter Corsair. If I were to estimate, the Yamaha is better than a Gibson for less, and the Schecter is equal to the Gibson for a lot less.

I completely agree with you. I would love to get my hands on those instruments. A friend of mine used to have the Yamaha that you mention here and it is absolutely amazing. I Would love to try the Schecter as well. Thanks for the heads up on these two models. I’ve expressed my fondness for the Yamaha stuff many times on this channel. I have a couple of old JX series guitar amplifiers, as well as a Yamaha bass and imho they stand up to anything out there for what they are. Stay tuned to the channel for more and hope you Have a good day

Lucas Haneman I have a Corsair! Got lots of recordings of it on my channel. I’m eventually going to get a second guitar, what do you say I send it to you for a demo when I do?

the 1994 samick ,SAN 450 is the most under rated ..not surte why its the best. you gotta try it. not sure about other years. but the 19945 seems to blow others out the water.

Tokai, Eastman good alternatives. Eastman maybe even better then Gibson.
@LucasHaneman5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I absolutely agree with you about Tokai and Eastman! I bought my Eastman guitar having tried it in a local shop here in Ottawa, with no prior experience with Eastman. I traded in my Gibson that day without even thinking twice!

Eastman for me, sounds better and costs much less , thanks.

As a proud owner of the Eastman I have to agree with you :-) it sounds great, and it’s also unique with the solid wood construction. Still love mine after all these years!
