beautiful theory put into practise. The softness, the pace, the grace, everything determens the sound of the guitar. And I can tell you that your soul is one with the guitar!

Hi, Mat, great reminder for me when I took my guitar lessons from my teacher always focus on the musicality of the piece rather than technique. we have to combine both things into our practice.

The beauty of music, especially classical, is that it is expressive which invites imagination. Anybody drawn to music is imaginative therefore as this gentleman so elegantly points out...use it!

Hi Matt... And Happy New Year. Sensational advice on taking control of a piece of music and bringing it to life as opposed to just playing the notes like, (as you mentioned), a robot. When you get to a certain level you HAVE to take advantage of all the nuances, Dynamics and tonal variations that are at your disposal on the classical guitar. That's what makes this type of playing so RICH!!!! I took a piece called Leccion by Sor and embellished it by using harmonics on the open strings, played a couple of spots in the music like as a feather, and even experimented with some rhythmic variations in the change of that piece. IT CAME ALIVE!!! I know what you're saying in this video... You have to add color and turn these pieces into your own as opposed to just playing black dots off of a sheet of music. I am Ssooooo glad I found this video. This concept separates guitar players from thoroughbred musicians... amateurs from professionals!!! Once again I truly appreciate this ear-opening information.. and it's right on time for the new year. I wish you nothing but the very best keep up the good work.

I'm totally in agreeance with Mathew and his tips on musicality. It is often neglected in detriment of the musical idea. Speed and showmanship often primary goals rather than transmitting the true musical content of the piece. When listening to great players, it is the detail that makes their playing that much more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. Could you do a video on the correct tuning for the classical guitar and comment on the Equal Temperament in relation to the guitar. Many thanks for posting all these great tips for the guitar. Your sound is brilliant!! Happy new year 2016

Great lesson! Perhaps the underlying idea is to really listen to you own playing. Many guitarists are just 'playing' the notes and not really paying attention to what it actually sounds like. You can very easily apply this to practicing scales or otherwise 'boring' technical exercises. Just have some fun exploring different sounds and tones.

So, after you get down technically one of those 120 Giuliani arpeggios, then work on playing it with very specific dynamics and tonal combinations, like forte and staccato or piano and legato, or from piano to forte or visa versa.

You're giving very useful lessons regarding playing musically but in my opinion you forgot to tell that at first a player really has to determine where the musical sentences start and where they end. In order to play musically you have to understand a musical piece and in fact at first have made an analysis of it! What you are doing automatically is not giving the volume to the off beat notes but it is an often made mistake. Further a remark has to be made that a lot of pupils are not aware about the pulse in a piece that has to be there. You have to know "where" you are. Take some risks when you are playing otherwise it won't be very interesting to an experienced listener but on the other hand you need to built in some certainties to be able to give a good performance and rely on those. For me, and I think for many players it should be wise to be able to record yourself with every piece you are playing. At first it is very surprising to hear yourself back and not always in a positive way. But listening to yourself will urge you to play more musically (and mostly more securely!) Thumbs up for the friendly and positive way your presentation has been given!

This is the Prelude from J.S. Bach's Partita No. 3 in E Major, BWV 1006. Commonly though of as being for solo violin, Bach didn't actually specify instrumentation; he even transcribed this for other instruments, adapting it for his cantatas BWV 29 and 120a, fun fact!
