In Guitar Wishlist Episode 3 we look at the Yamaha SG2000 from 1976 and this is definitely a #guitar I want to add to the collection some day. A Japanese made piece of awesome guitar, endorsed by Santana and designed to be the best of Gibson combined in one deluxe guitar. Another one makes the list.

I own the 1982 SG800S Standard in my avatar. Purchased new at the Yamaha store in Ginza. In this evolution of the SG line, the pickups were improved and were the first split coil units available (the tones are spring loaded push-push). The body has binding on the top and neck sides, but the headstock is an overlay. The guitar has seen 4 continents, 2 Coast Guard ships, and numerous moving vans. While others have come and gone over the last 50+ years, it and my 1973 Ovation Deacon are my forever guitars!

SG2000 actually has an ebony fingerboard. Bill Nelson bought and reviewed a new build SG2000 (around 2010 I think?), and at the time he thought the quality was comparable to the original. He found the sound of his original to have sounded slightly sweeter, but opined that it could have been because the original was older, well aged and "broken in". He did not regret buying the new one at all.

My first decent guitar was a tobacco sunburst 1977 SG2000, bought when I was 16 in 1986. Wonderful instrument with an unusually flamed top for an instrument of that vintage. Heavy as balls, though, which was the main reason I eventually px'ed it for a new Strat Plus in the early 90s. It's the only guitar I ever regret getting rid of, and I'd love to have it back.

PS-Santana made similar comments about the "love" that went into the SG2000. I saw a vintage interview recently where he compared the Yamaha to a Thanksgiving dinner prepared by his wife, while a lot of the production American guitars were more like a fast food cheeseburger! Lol. I have to wonder if the huge budget that PRS can afford to spend on perks for their endorsers had anything to do with his switch from Yamaha to PRS?

Yeah those Yamaha SG 's are spectacular guitars for the money. They remind me a bot of the Ibanez 'Artist' which you can score here in Canada for about $450 or just under their budget range they're wicked my brother bought one a few months ago!

its the guitar that kept me grounded and away from the myths and guitar drama. its the guitar that stayed in good condition throughout all the years thanks to its poly finish. this is a guitar that gibson could have been in its norlin years.

Coil split with the push/pull pots. Solid like Les Pauls with they were. Sustain forever, high gain PUs. Great playability and as you mentioned great build quality. I would buy one if the price was right for me. The best player I ever worked with used a black Yamaha SG2000, magic, he was a huge Bill Nelson fan who was also a SG2000 player. Currently, Chris Buck and Matteo Mancuso (other worldly) play Yamaha Rev Stars also very cool instruments.

I really love my Yammie SG 2000 which I play in my Santana tribute band. I own Fender Strats and a Gibson Les Paul....also great guitars....but the Yamaha is by far my favorite.

I want one. I have for years. I knew a guy who had a SG 1000, and it was great. Finding a clean example is hard if you don't want to overspend.

With the straight through neck and brass sustain block, you can really let those notes ring out. I highly recommend having a listen to Issei Noro of Casiopea. He is one of the most skilled guitarists of the late 70s and early 80s and loved these guitars.

Some players prefer the 1000 to the 2000 (including me), but the 2000 is still very nice!

I really love the neck thru and sculpted heel of the 2000. I do think that and the sustain block actually adds to the sustain. I have nothing bad to say about the 1000. Yamaha SG's are all great guitars.

@@garyhill2740 The set neck of the 1000 is more akin to a Les Paul. Trust me, the 1000’s have LOADS of sustain sustain block or not. John McGeoch (PIL, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Magazine) favored the 1000 for various reasons. I wouldn’t kick the 2000 out of bed or anything, but really just comes down to preference.

@@sixbladeknife44 I really appreciate all the classic Yamaha's from that era. I think the features of the 2000 that differentiate it from the run of the mill Les Paul make it all the more attractive. The sculpted heel and upper fret access possible with the neck thru, and neck stability it offers are desirable.I love the striping effect visually on the back of the neck and body. I would love to find an emerald green SF-600. Because greedy collectors and speculators have bought them all up, these '70's and early '80's Yamaha's are all getting quite pricey. Not that they aren't worth it. They are, in a relative sense, still bargains at the prices they sell for. It would be hard to find something new that is equivalent for less money. (The last time the SG2000 was reissued (around 2010?) it went for $2500 with the leather hard shell case, and that was far less than anything of similar quality from Gibson, Fender, or PRS.) But used models probably would still not be quite so expensive even now if some well to do hoarders didn't feel the need to own five or six of every model in every color just because they can. (When would you find time to play them all?) In any case, I am glad to see these fine Yamaha electrics getting the respect they deserve.

Great guitar, heavy old beasts but used by a lot of punk and new wave bands in the 70's/80's. I love the double cut shape very unique as are the inlays. They don't currently.make them, they have a closely related model, the SG1820 which is available. They did a re-run of the SG2000 about 10 years ago which were made in Japan and the quality was as good as the originals.
