It's great to hear him speak about the importance of intonation. It's driven my nuts checking the intonation of my Furch Vintage 3 OM SR for hours, days, and months. I've been in contact with Furch many times, sent it back to the store for checking , and took it to several luthiers. I wish manufacturers had intonation as the number one priority over anything else.

In guitar terms, intonation is a guitar's ability to play chords in tune up the neck IF you've tuned the guitar perfectly to a tuner (assuming the tuner is accurate). In general, "intonation" is set by adjusting each string's length slightly, even on an acoustic guitar with a seemingly non-adjustable saddle. These small adjustments dial-in the intonation. Oddly, intonation is very subjective as not everyone agrees when a particular guitar's intonation is correct, regardless of what a tuner or the person setting it says. Intonation is often thought of by players as a guitar's character or its mojo, and with that, their guitars usually get neglected as they either don't know, don't care or can't afford to get it corrected. With intonation, there is no definitive right or wrong, however, most agree when a guitar's intonation isn't right. Tonal beating can occur within the higher chords, but an even more common problem is when a 1st position chord such as a natural E chord play in tune while the natural D chord which sounds "out". This can make the hair stand up on the back of some people's neck. One thing is for sure, a big reason to get your guitar's intonation dialed-in during a set-up is because even people who are not players hear poor intonation and usually translate it to the player not being very good. Some guitars can be more forgiving than others depending on many factors such as fret type, neck relief, pickup height, string condition, bridge radius vs fretboard radius, the cut of the nut, and the big one.... fingering technique (ie finger pressure). A competent guitar tech or Luthier can set intonation for the player's technique, which is NOT simply matching the 12th fret harmonic and 12th fret fretted note perfectly. There's typically more to it than that as each guitar and player are different. The intonation should be set correctly twice a year on wooden guitars that live in climates with big seasonal humidity swings.
