I saw social distortion prison bound tour in Sacramento second level in 1987, I walked in by myself at 16, it was my 17 birthday, Mike ness walked up to me and said hi, I immediately felt welcome,he then proceeded to sign a prison bound poster for me and graciously asked me to spend the rest of the nite on stage next to the drum kit.who does that? Mike ness does, kindness grace love respect . The life of a 16 year old kid changed that nite I am the luckiest person in the world. Thank you social distortion thank you Mike ness❤

Right? Mike's tone is just fucking incredible. Billy Zoom from X does his Bassman mods (he did a lot for my old guitar player's rig); not totally sure where his P90's come from - Seymour Duncan custom winds them as I heard.. Otherwise, he only has a Boss DS-1 up front (I've seen his rig closeup more than a few times and have friends in his solo band) and his "Orange County" Deluxe is a '72 I think. It's a tone to die for. Clearly something to be said for raw simplicity.

This is a great video for showing off how vital the drums are to Social D. I think the drummer here is David Hidalgo Jr., or at least that's what fits with the timeline I found. I'm glad whoever did the video edit here gave the drums their due. Usually the drums get just a few cuts. It's worth taking another view to concentrate on just the drums. That's really fine work, considering the idea for the song was for the drums to be strong throughout the song, provide the clarity and punctuation that the guitars don't, but to never fully take over. They integrate really well, and on record, if you don't concentrate on the individual contributions you can easily miss the importance of the drums- there are no "here, look at me !" drum solos. I haven't seen S.D. in at least 8 years now, but they sound great here. The first time I saw them was about 1991- about the time "Ring of Fire" was getting them a lot of exposure. Screaming Trees opened, in case anyone remembers them. As I remember it was in some big box in Irvine that seemed like a gym. I was a teenager, and that show was my "advanced beginner" practice with mosh pits. It was sweaty and intense, but I didn't get hit in the face so I was happy. The fans were all pretty cool. Just the normal accidents. I kept trying to get mosh cred through high school, pushing forward and being brave. Then I had a bad experience at a Skinny Puppy concert that ended my mosh career. Some guys make it their whole mission in life to beat the crap out of any noobs they see. And when your a pretty skinny high schooler with no tattoos, you're really asking for trouble if you try to scrap with the big boys. I would advise anyone going to a loud and violent sounding band to try to research first how violent their fans are. Some good bands have a LOT of dick fans. I wouldn't really know about today's bands, since I'm now a fossil, but just try to know what you're getting into.

Went to see them live for my 18th birthday. Freaking amazing concert. Probably one of the best times I've ever had.

Junior Henderson Nice. Mike ness has such a good stage presence. It was a small venue as well at this old theater. Atmosphere was fantastic.

***** Great to know the band is cutting across generations. Saw them at the Orange Peel, a small venue in Asheville in 2013, and ended up a few feet back front and center from the stage. Best show I've seen in at least a couple decades.

I have seen them live probably 10 or more times, before and after we lost Dennis Dannell. We all miss Dennis of course, but gotta love that they gained Jonny "Two-Bags". Anyway, without a doubt my favorite live band ever. The songs move me the same now as they did in 1990.
