I've been playing guitar for about twenty years and only just started taking lessons. Up until now, I've basically been playing rhythm and keeping time. I don't have anyone to jam with unless my wife is on the keyboard at the same time. My guitar teacher told me about intervals and now I finally see how to get the sound I've been longing for. In my mind, it's basically a way of combining rhythm guitar and a melodic lead. I'm super excited. Once I get these patterns down smoothly I'll be a completely different player. I bought a tablature book where I can place the spots on paper and have that visual reference. I need the dots in the proper location - the numbers don't work as well for me. This video is amazing.

Thirds was a wonderful lesson! Glad I came across your channel. Made a suscriber out of me. Opened up my eyes to a new angle I hadn't explored. After being exposed I can now delve in to a deeper study of the concept of linear and vertical thirds. Thank you many, many times.

Steve - It appears that when we talk about playing 3rds (or 10ths; as well as a few other intervals) on the guitar, the key is defined by the lower note, but when we talk about playing 6ths on the guitar, the key seems to be defined by the upper note. What is the best way to understand or reconcile the different treatment? Thanks!

Great observation. The difference is more of a practical one. Think of it more like this - there is a melody note and then there is a harmony note. The harmony note can be voiced either above or below the melody note. For example, the two notes "C" and "E" can be thought of as a 3rd, 6th or 10th - depending on how they are voiced (which note is higher). You generally want the "melody" note to be the higher voiced note. So, in this situation I'd play them as a 6th - with the C being the higher note and the E providing the lower harmony note. But, if, in another musical situation the "E" is the melody note, then I would voice the "E" higher and would use the 3rd or the 10th interval with the E as the upper note. I hope this helps.
