Copy the fingerings for now, and just get into the sounds of what you're doing. He's not necessarily a theorist, but you can play around with what he's doing, and at least get a sonic idea put together. It's hard to realize things in an unfamiliar key (Bb), but you can follow it visually and then sonically...and then in theory... good luck!

@@ricaard That is very good advice. I might add another basic concept: Precede any chord with its own 5-chord, e.g., A7 - D, and add extensions that suit your ear, e.g., Am7 - D9.

i can't believe i stumbled into this lessons it's exactly what I would have ask you "what are you doing with all these chords or what did your father show you to grasp the idea of using all these chords omg . I'm gonna work on this ....do you have follow ups to this particular kind of example? i would happily pay for this and by the way since I'm familiar with 6th ( raise 2&3 voicings off the 6th string and 5th string allá jack Peterson etc etc is your low bass primarily used literally as a bass so that if so, i can just watch your 6th and 5th string voicings and not be so confused . i love your 5 o'clock show . it's like watching a woody Allen film score on all of his movies jp

C9 is bad, it doesn't correspond with the hand position

He does play a C9. Keep in mind that he's playing a 7-string, so his C bass note is at the 3rd fret on the low 7th string (which is tuned to A), rather than the 3rd fret of the 5th string as shown in the chord diagram. We chose the chord grids for 6-string guitars, since that's what 98% of the population plays.

Yes, and indeed he plays C9, even though he says C7. I know it can be confusing, but this happens in jazz quite often, where players refer to chords as 7ths -- because that's what may be in the chart and is the core harmony -- but they play extended or altered chords, because they sound nicer than just playing 7ths all the time.
