When I was playing in a rock band in high school, inevitably something would go wrong at a gig and there'd be a short break while someone was fixing something. That's when I'd pull out the mario theme and give the audience a laugh

Gaaah! The Ode to Joy melody has an anticipation of one beat on the return to the first theme, and everyone drops it! Please, please, add that little note; it breaks the "squarishness" of the line and adds momentum.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m definitely gonna have to go pick up Spanish Romance; such a beautiful piece that I never considered learning. Gonna have to keep implementing more chords into my progressions too. Feels like a constant struggle between having complex enough rhythms and properly filling out the melodies with chords.
